Mental Health-Going Mad for Fun and Profit

Recommended Posts

I think it would be interesting to have some more mental healthish-type stuff going on. Here's a whole passel of suggestions with no coherent organization whatsoever:

Trait: Attention deficit. Attention deficit dupes have a hard time focusing and may randomly stop doing a task and go pick up another one-which they may likewise abandon half-finished. They're less likely to get distracted from tasks they like (higher skill level=greater interest would be easier than including an entirely separate "interest" stat), and the apothecary can be used to develop medications to help manage it.

Stress response: Psychosis. With all the pressure they're under, your dupes are starting to lose it a little. They're seeing, hearing, and even smelling things that aren't there. Psychotic dupes sometimes respond to nonexistant stimuli-attacking or fleeing enemies who aren't there, having entire conversations with no one, trying to perform tasks where none exist.

Trait: Savant. This dupe is REALLY GOOD at one or two things, to the exclusion of all else. Starts with one or two stats extremely high (like 13+) and those stats have an elevated cap, but can only perform jobs related to those stats (eg a Savant dupe with high cooking could basically keep the colony fed on his lonesome, as long as he can find someone else to build a microbe musher and a grill).

Condition: Burnout. Well, it was probably inevitable. Your dupe has worked themselves too hard for too long. They've given all they've got and now they're paying the price. A dupe who's burned out is completely out of commission for a day or two to rest rest. Burnout is sort of a secondary stress response in that any dupe is susceptible to it; starting around 50% or so, dupes under too much stress begin the journey toward burnout. Greater stress means burnout comes quicker, and conversely, managing stress well can prevent it entirely. Different stress responses have different effects on burnout. For example, destructive dupes will burn out quicker since they're expending so much energy breaking stuff; egging them on can be an effective way of curtailing their rampage, at the cost of being short a worker for a few days.

Stress response: fainting/passing out. Seems pretty self-explanatory to me.

Stress response: Manic. Rather than being a binary state like the other responses, this one scales with stress. When a dupe is under enough stress for burnout to start being a concern, they begin to work faster, and their speed improves as their stress increases. Unfortunately they're extra susceptible to burnout; so much so that making it all the way to 100% stress is extremely rare.

Trait: Zen/philosophical. This dupe is extremely good at managing stress and gains it at a reduced rate. They also recover faster from burnout.
