Creature Herding

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure if anyone else has suggested this, but it would be nice to have the ability to herd creatures into an area. Rather than having the harvest command simply attack to kill the creatures, the duplicants will capture, then place them in a designated area. Maybe add a researched item that allows you to designate an area as a pen that you can then assign a creature type.

Make a building called a Cage in the Farming tech tree. Cages are storage buildings but only hold creatures and dupes. Default setting is All. Another default setting might be Capture Only, which works like the Sweep Only option for compactors.

Alongside the Attack option when you click on a creature, there'd be a Capture button. Click this and a dupe would come along and grab it up. The creature might attack the dupe while being carried.

If there's an open Cage somewhere, the dupe carries the creature to it. Otherwise the dupe stands there and simply drops the creature after a few seconds. This is long enough to tell the dupe to walk somewhere before dropping it, for quick and easy creature moving.

If the Capture Only option is unchecked, then dupes will treat the Cage like a compactor and go out and automatically grab up a creature if possible, assuming the Cage has a high enough priority setting.

And just like compactors, when you uncheck whatever creature setting its on, the creature pops out.

Puft and Morb Cages would just automatically consume/emit gases. But the Hatch might need to be delivered minerals or something. And a Dupe Cage would need food delivered to it.

Or there could be a trap building that you need to make in appropriate place, eventually put some bait in it and it will catch the creature when it gets too close. Then the trap will turn to "trapped creature" item and that can be swept into a cage.
