Well from what i've seen so far, there is already balance in the random generator : the more starting stats (without accounting the traits) a duplicant have, the more decor expectation they have. 

Actually, what they could make is an in-game building that you add on your portal (or connect with something) that lets you customize the duplicants you print (respecting balance, the more you give the more expectation they have) and also maybe customize their traits. That way you pay some material (and maybe a research) to be then able to influence the duplicants you print to fit your situation. They could also make add-ons that increase the generation speed of the duplicants, etc...

Have some high level buildings generate tons of heat. Then enable dupes in exosuits to dig to the void outside to place radiators which dump the insane amounts of heat. How about solar panels? Conversely contrive some reason to require the generation of heat in order for your dupes to survive / to keep the right stuff liquid / gaseous.

Example: have a game mode where your asteroid/world orbits the sun closely, warming one side of the world excessively. As the world rotates/orbits, a different side of the world heats up, and the other side cools down. This requires the player to actively manage heat the further the base expands to the edges of the world.
