Bioluminescence and light-sources in Shipwrecked worlds

Recommended Posts

Don't Starve is a game full of surprises and mysteries. One of the biggest mysteries lies in nothing other than bioluminiscent insects and plankton, specifically in the fact that both mobs seem to lack the ability to reproduce in the Don't Starve world, which may lead to an unevitable shortage of these beautiful beings in long-lasting worlds, specially in the tropics, where there are no caves where light bulbs make for a renewable source of fuel for lanterns and light-sources alike.

Realising that there are no renewable lantern-fuels in Shipwrecked worlds, I came here to ask for the possibilityof there being added some way to make bioluminescence a renewable resource or a renewable lantern-fuel to the Shipwrecked world. What do you think?

Well, theoretically we can call it renewable, but still, you have to kill and blow up a whole whale, just for the light chance of it dropping bioluminescence in some sort of crafted item, the sort of renewable that is not worth to take as an objective to find and use strategically. I believe that adding a spawning timer, minimum and a maximum number of units per clutch (or simply making the clutches able to regenerate over a reasonable amount of time, or with some cost), with a limit number of units per world at all times, to prevent them from becoming too easy to aquire should do.

Or maybe they could just add some lightbulb-type resourse, in the volcano.

I would definitely agree with @nuno_osorio here. The thought that fireflies and especially bioluminessence are hard to renew when it's something you would need in large quantities very quickly mid or late game if your world is not RoG/Vanilla merged and having caves in the world. Same goes for dubloons and especially gold itself; gold is non-renewable and unless you're Woodlegs who wear Lucky hat and repairs it every time it's at 1% and actually are lucky to get gold or dubloons from the treasure chests spawned pretty commonly all the time, you're kind of screwed with gold tools, unless you trawl a lot.

So, having fireflies and bioluminessence somehow renewable (perhaps for fireflies, whenever you catch one, another one will spawn in the world in the same biome turf you picked it on, but the location would be random and not on-screen and for bioluminessence, perhaps it could just respawn in another place of the world on water when picked after like 1 day or so if a whole "patch" has been taken/harvested/cought) and the idea of a SW equivalent of light bulbs in the volcano... Perhaps with these, you could craft some cool lantern or some strange light source, which acts kind of like a lantern, in that it can be refueled, but it can also be used like a torch in a sense that you can light things on fire with it. Perhaps call the plant Fire Flower (lol, I hope Nintendo has not trademarked that name for an item :P) from which you could harvest Fire Bulbs or something.
