Need help with caves and ruins.

Recommended Posts

So I've surivived a whole "year" multiple times now, and have surviving on the surface pretty much down. But I still get completely destroyed when going into caves and ruins. Does anyone have any tips for how to stay alive long enough to get the good items that are down there? I'm playing as Wolfgang btw.

How specifically are you getting "destroyed" when underground?

Explaining that would help people to give specific advice for your problem.

Wolfgang isn't ideal because he has a higher sanity drain but is still very much doable.

Here is how I would suggest tackling my first Cave/Ruins run.  You may not find all of these steps necessary, however, they will help keeping you alive and sane.

Prebuild a firepit, crockpot, chest, icebox, and tent.

I usually have Ice Chester and put several jerkies and meals inside of it.  Also, have the Tam, walking cane, armor, bush hat, lantern, and miner's hat.

Explore the caves until finding the entrance to the Ruins.  Near the Ruins opening, place your prebuilt structures.  Ideally, you'd find making a camp away from any spiders, nightmare fissures, and bats is best.  If Rock Lobsters are nearby that would be great too because they can help with Depth Worms.  Now that you have a base set up you could start to explore the Ruins.

I'm not sure how much you know about the Ruins but will assume you know about Nightmare Cycles and what not.  In case you don't, there are 4 different stages to it and you can read about it here:

http://dont-starve-game.wikia.com/wiki/Nightmare_Cycle

The Ruins can be difficult, I've been down there several times and still get in over my head when I become too confident.  So, plan to make small trips.  I usually use the first run to see where everything is.  Once you know which biomes have the statues you need to mine you can go back down and focus on those only.  If you want to take Rock Lobsters down with you to fight all the robots that could definitely help as well because there are a lot.  If you take Rock Lobsters down with you, I'd recommend not worrying about mining the statues initially and just escort them around to fight off the mobs down there.  After you've cleared out the areas you will only need to worry about Shadow Creatures.

If you are in an area where there are Nightmare Lights or Fissures you can equip your lantern and hid inside your bush hat.  Nothing will attack as you as long as a mob hasn't targeted you before hiding.  Earthquakes will trigger an animation that takes characters out from hiding and this may cause you to be spotted by a Shadow Creature.  If that happens just run around dodging the attackers until the cycle switches.

Do you play vanilla or RoG? If you have RoG, the moggles are a must. Regardless, it is better not to go down until you have the walking cane, the miner hat, and Tam O'Shanter. The ToS negates the sanity drain from the darkness, which is especially useful for Wolfgang. The ToS can be combined with a torch at first, but it's best to locate light bulbs asap so you combine it with the lantern. Switch up this comba with walking cane + miner hat and you should have sanity-safe cave exploration set.

I find it useful to set up a small base in the sunken forest nearest to the entrance. If you're lucky, there's berries, frogs, fishes, and cave bananas around as emergency food. Things you should build (pre-build) are a crockpot, a fridge, a few chests, and a firepit. Having some traps around for rabbits that fall during earthquakes may be useful too. Bring along (Snow) Chester for on-the-go meat storage if taffy and dragonpie aren't your thing.

As with the surface, spend the first few days exploring as much as possible and def mark the fissures. One thing you'll want not to close to your base are slurtle hills, because the inhabitants will come for you if you have rocks and they don't. Consider making walls if they do happen to be closeby. They're a great worm distraction and slime and armor source, but they're easier to maintain if they're at a small walking distance. A tooth trap field near a bunnyman village is incredibly handy for those times you may accidentally forget the no-meat rule. Rock lobster pens at strategic locations with a firepit can aid travel.

StaypuftMMM has the right idea about the Ruins.

I would think about what you really want from a specific run down there, and focus your attention on that. When I need a new Lazy Explorer, I take only what I need, sprint down, craft, and run. No time wasted on shadow-creature-death-fighting. If you need rocks, bring 2 opulent pickaxes and smash away, then leave. Time wasted is seconds closer to your impending doom if you stay down too long, especially as wolfgang.

You don't need anything to go down there other than a stack of jerky, if you don't have jerky, get 10-15 green mushrooms (or just wander the caves til you find them down there, they are in one of the biomes or two maybe and one of them has a ton) the walking cane speeds things up, chester slows stuff down, drop him at the place you drop in and he will never be toooo far away, and a mining hat, find a wall and scale the whole thing, takes 15-20 minutes if you don't stop. Pick up loose rocks and get some rock lobsters to fight anything you find, pick up all of the glow berries you can if your rock lobster kills anything, then go make some moggles for cave depth 2, not using moggles for cave depth 2 is stupid. Moggles make cave depth 2 nice. Killing the dirt worm to get glow berries is easy too, just make a couple log suits and fight a few til you figure it out, it does the same thing every time. But for cave depth 2, moggles is definitely something that youll want. Also go into caves during right season, I forget if it changes, but I am playing with super short seasons cause I got bored of long seasons, but I go during summer basically so I don't need any specific clothing. Also make sure you have full mining hat and probably 2-4 fireflies, if you scale the wall you should never not find some light plants to refuel it.

In short, caves really are easy, just enter, scale the wall ALL the way around the map, and you will def find a couple base starters sometimes with a crockpot even but always with a chest a fridge and a tent.

Cave depth 2 is harder, moggles make it nicer, and definitely do them in the summer since the night lights turn on at dusk and start spawning at dark based on outside world (90% sure of this) and try to have a couple sets of moggles for each first run til you scale those walls map it out and find where stuff is. Taking a few rock lobsters to depth 2 is smart since there is almost always a dirt worm when you drop in. Don't eat the glow berries, just make the moggles, they are extremely helpful, can actually see everything and they last 10 minutes each.

Don't go down to the ruins until you become comfortable with the cave. Moggle and a walking cane are vital down there in the ruins because shadow creatures spawn everywhere around you and since you'll be wearing your backpack most of the time meaning that you'll want to avoid combat if possible. Seriously, getting chased by shadow that can spawn from ANYWHERE is a big pain. Don't worry about food down in the ruins. Once you clear the entire village, you'll get copious amount of food. Also, bring rock lobsters down there with you. They will be your guardian angels against depths worms.

Also, I was playing as maxed out WX and I have no experience with Wolfgang so I don't know how it might differ
