[Feedback] Reason For Abscence

Recommended Posts

I truly believe this game has plenty of potential. However let me explain to you why I've been avoiding this game for quite some time and also what I've enjoyed seeing over these past months.

Why I Stopped Playing

There seems to be very little reason to play this game except for surviving for as long as you can and that gets boring very fast. Unlike other crafting sandbox games, there is no decorating, and you get to a point where you have everything and there is nothing left to do but survive. The game just gets very repetitive. Now I'm not going to just leave you with this feedback, I'm also going to tell you how you may catch my attention again.

  • Add improved and balanced PvP.

There is almost no Wilderness PvP going on and also very little PvP. It can be because no one enjoys it or it can be because PvP has no work put into it. I'm personally tired of seeing the same characters and having the lack of ranged weapons to protect myself from other players. I'd also like to see more traps and ways to prevent griefing through crafts. For example, having something extinguish my fires when I'm not at base and attack other players who shouldn't be there without it having to be overly expensive to craft. PvP is just dead without being forced to use mods and it's what would offer this game plenty of replayability.

  • Ability to own land, build a House, and decorate it.

Land protection, customization, and stronger storage options are a must for longer replayability of this game. For a crafting game, I'm not really ever satisfied with my crafts and this would change that. We need more things that we could look forward to and be able to hold onto for a bit longer.

  • Give us more survival options.

We're really limited with the things that we can do in this game. There isn't enough content to allow us to choose how we want to play. We all need the same types of resources for the most part, so it's not a surprise when players build their bases all around rocky biomes. I'm hoping caves will change this, but we'll see. The same can be said about food sources. We need to be able to painlessly adjust to the environment without everyone trying to find that perfect spot to put a base that's near everything.

  • Allow us to join a server within any season and still survive.

When I used to run my own server, during winter and summer, almost no one joined. Don't Starve Together should be a game that brings players together not apart because of season. I’ve already seen some items that help remedy this, but we need way more.

  • Spider den buildup needs to be balanced.

A server shouldn't be punished for running too long. Spider dens ruin servers.

  • The game makes absolutely no attempt to balance or even consider playing a public server.

There is no attempt to reduce griefing. Ghosts in survival servers harm everyone globally even though you're not even grouping up with them. PvP is far from balanced and very lacking, making it not worth even considering. Replenishing doesn't replenish vital resource that allows a long running server to be playable for someone who's new to it. Public gameplay is just a mess and should be one of the main things that everyone should be looking forward to, but it currently its not.

Patches I Enjoyed

One of the best things that I've seen is the replenishing feature. I wish to see more of this multiplayer balancing rather than just taking vanilla DS and sticking multiplayer on it. It was a much needed feature and I'm glad that it made it's way in.

Would appreciate if mod could spell check my title. :joyous:

I hope caves gets more unique items to it, so we can make some of these things. As for decoration, the only decoration is potted ferns, which are 100% decoration and kind of boring. However, there's plenty of ways to decorate, one of my favorite ways is by getting certain items in surplus (Gold, sticks, fireflies, what not) and making shrines out of them by dropping them, spelling out things, making shapes, etc. I also enjoy splattering turfs in patterns, and if I hadn't died in it, I would've taken a screenshot of the world where my name was visible from the map due to turfs.

Joining in all seasons is crucial. BarnyardOwl made a mod to spawn stuff near portal and on his servers winter joining is quite possible now, despite lots of people being afraid to (the mod hands out thermal stones and some basic mats).

Because of that mod, lots of survival games are lasting up to summer and some even go past one year.

Wilderness is barely played because worlds go crazy after a while. Either all resources are depleted, or spiders dominate.

There is no middle term between Endless/Wilderness and Survival world length. While the former usually go to thousands of days, the latter rarely reaches summer, while most games ending on Spring.

That's why there should be an option for world to only reset after X game days, or Y real days.

Add improved and balanced PvP.

Yes, would be nice to ve a more interactive fighting like to parry or dogding attacks using special combat movements.

Ability to own land, build a House, and decorate it.

That would be also nice. A house with an entrace, which works like a sinkhole bringing you to another world, which is your building and much smaller - depending how you sized it upon construction. This little world would be generated during your construction. But implementing this would be alot of work. Also listening to outside-events like, if a guy is destroying your home from the outside, which makes a new entrance (to your little world)

Give us more survival options.

Using more items for the same needs will make the game just more complicated! I dislike to remember hundreds of potions or ingredients, which are loosely connected with eachother. You want 5 another types of monster meat?? In what DST can benefit is to use some concept, which we all already know from our daily life, like a locking system :-P or a vehicle (this beefalo is still not there to ride).

Allow us to join a server within any season and still survive.

First you say, DST gets boring over time and now its too hard? Do you know, how much more boring it will be, when your wish comes true??

I want more options, so we can survive in more areas. Unlike singleplayer, we're dealing with other players and they're all fighting over the same spots, same biomes, and the same resources. I almost always find a base at the exact area that I want to set camp. Therefore I would like more crafts that will allow players to adapt to areas without a particular biome, resource, and so on without being overly punished for it.

I'm alright with some areas being better than others, but in Don't Starve in general, where you set base, is too overly imporant than it should be. It's something that I never liked about the game. In other Survival games, it's more about finding untouched land and it should be somewhat the same here.

Let me explain. If I'm on the server in autumn and build myself up until winter, it's easy to survive especially if you know how to survive. However it's messed up how no one joins during winter because they much rather join a server that's easier to survive on in the beginning such as autumn. That's just terrible. Also I feel the same way, why join a server in winter, when there is one in autumn and I'd have more fun playing in autumn where it's nice an easy.

I do agree that the game still lacks a bunch of decorations stuff that would make it so much more appealing to keep playing and to make different styles of bases.

But then again i'm with 2100+ days on my Megabase and i will still need 1500 days to finish all i want to do. There is still 2 wings left, then i need to start working in the caves base (there is a lot of cool stuff you can do down there) and then re-planting the entire world the way i want and the way i feel it looks great (with basicly everything extra i have and all the stuff from the other 2 caves - being that twigs, grass and berries)

So in Resume i do agree with you in a lot of stuff but in the other hand i also feel there is enough that makes you keep playing the game.

I can't w8 for Caves & Ruins to be on DST and to do a similar base with all my viewers.

I will leave the link here in case you want to take some ideas :)

Best Regards,

Glhrmzz

Something that i want is an ownership rights. Example being i built this chest, my name gets tagged to said chest other players will only get the option to walk/exaimine it unless the owner allows that player to be able to use, same would go for all other items built by the player. its quite annoying playing on a server, some noob joins, takes all your food/supplies and leaves you with nothing. This would be for non PVP games. I think it would help improve games so that people arn't raging that some guy just robbed them/mooching off their work then end up leaving/trolling other players before leaving cause they felt like they were troll'd themselves. I hate dealing with players that don't want to do anything to help and just essentially feed of your own supplies till you both end up dying cause one actually doing something and the other is just standing there
