What do you recommend as "deciding factor" on Teleportado?

Recommended Posts

Forgive me if this seems a bit noob or left field, but as someone who's just started playing enough to grasp the fringes of extended survival ( just teleported the first time after 57 days on first world and am on day 65 on second), this seems pertinent. I'm to the point where although I'm always needing to do something to stay on top (I can't just screw off for days at a time) but where I don't feel like it's an uphill battle to not die. I'm still not keen on caves and never ventured into ruins.

So I'm interested in what your experienced opinions are as when it's time to abandon ship? What various factors make you decide "if I stay, I'm fucked. Leave now and start over."

I'll leave if I have no Pig King (he's a source for renewable gold). I'll leave if I have one or zero MacTusks. I'll leave if I don't particularly like the layout of the map/biomes, including wormholes - I like efficient and convenient travel. Since you said you don't bother with caves, I would also leave if I ran out of rocks and flint. Like TemporaryMan, I can sometimes get bored of my playthrough and want a fresh start... although usually in that case, I'll start a new world instead of Teleportatoing.

One time I Teleportatoed because my world was overrun with spiders. I didn't take care of the nests early enough, and I had the rocky biome that's filled with them. Pretty much everywhere I went had 2 queens and multiple new nests. It didn't seem worth the trouble to take them all out. Another time I Teleportatoed because I was tired of my current character, and wanted to play around with another characters abilities late-game (Woody to Wickerbottom).

Like I said, 60 day is my record at the moment. Do you really run through that much gold running into triple digit days?

Also, I don't mind caves, just haven't been at long term play enough to have gotten use to exploring them regularly. Im going up on a year at my current world and still haven't found a cave.

His hat?  Yes, it's worth it.  And his tusk, too.  He's trivially easy once you have enough hound teeth.  I don't know why you'd need more than one camp, though.  Unless they're close together it'd be hard to visit them all every two or three days.

As for the gold, I don't really know how much I've used in my longest running world.  I suppose it'd be possible to farm moleworms for gold instead, but since I always have more meat than I need anyway it's just easier to trade the spare meat rather than spend time digging up moles for gold and throwing out piles of rot.

I don't NEED more than one camp... I just like having more than one, gives me more chances for the Tam and tusk, and something to do during late-game winters. The Tam-o-Shanter is absolutely worth it, it's Tier 2 warmth AND gives you passive sanity regen. And yeah, gold is pretty important, even more so in triple digit days. You can make better tools, and it's used in many structural recipes. I burn through it like crazy, especially once I reach the point of building a mega-base or multiple smaller bases.

If you're looking for a cave, check the swamps. There will be a little patch of forest that appears, I think of it as my swamp oasis, and there's always a cave there. If you're playing RoG, look around the pig village that's next to the Glommer statue, I always find a cave there as well.

Awesome. Will do...

I've just crossed the year mark and reentered spring. I've got a decent base by my reckoning, so I'm hesitant to leave, but while I'm hovering on day 80, I'm a bit concerned about hounds. Obviously I've never been this far yet, but everything outside of the forum seems to push toward hounds being overwhelming around day 100, unless you have the Houndius Shootius items to assist.

Is this the general consensus? Is it a losing battle, or will a log suit, football helmet, spear and some tooth traps make short work out of them even beyond that point?

As of day 80, I still just suit up and kill them at my doorstep (unless leading them to Beefalo is feasible).

Lots of tooth traps is the second best solution for hounds.( the first one being the houndius shootius). If you are 80 days in then making tooth traps should not be the problem. There are other ways to do it without spending resources i.e. beefalos or bush hat+spider nests. Personally I think 80 days is too early for you to change worlds. See how caves go for you, I like caves very much I even have a save where I spent 200 days down there.

Tooth traps fields are pretty essential after you've passed a full game year. Sure, you can suit up and melee the hounds, but it's so much quicker and easier to use traps. They take out those massive hound waves like no one's business, and make short work of giants. That's another thing I like having multiple MacTusks for... it's pretty common to get teeth from his hounds, so I can build up my trap field even earlier. I've honestly never bothered with the Houndius Shootius. Maybe one day for decorative purposes, but I just feel like tooth traps are the most practical.

I agree with grekon, stick it out in this world for a while, and experiment with the caves. I was really intimidated by them the first time I went underground, but it was much easier than I thought to survive and thrive. I won't give you pointers and spoilers unless you ask =) , with the exception of one: make a meat effigy on the surface, and have a second one in-reserve (built/crafted, but not placed). That way if you die, you're right back at base with all your supplies, and can drop your pre-built one immediately while you begin to regroup.

Miner Hat - best item for caves, the weather effects are still down there so you gotta have ways to deal with them without using any hats cuz you gonna be wearing a miner hat. Know how to restore sanity and its good to be able to make some healing salves(1 rock, 1 gland, 2 ashes and caves give infinite rocks) not gonna tell you more since that would not be fun. EXPLORE!!!

Edit: I once tried to 1v3 depth worms with no armor instead of leaving the caves, made 2 mistakes got hit twice and they took me down... silly me.

Ha, looks like I was typing up my last response at the same time you were asking about the caves. Sorry for the double-post here.

I typically pre-build items before I go caving. I have a chest, crockpot, drying rack, icebox, farm, birdcage, flingo, and both types of firepits on-reserve. I do this so that I can immediately build a cave base once I find an acceptable area. Keep an eye out for light shafts from the sky, those are good places to build so your farms and plants grow easily. Also, you can sometimes find a set piece in the caves under them where a mini-base already exists.

As far as supplies, I always bring Chester so that he can hold my meat and/or food while I explore. I alternate between wearing my Tam (for sanity) vs. a mining helmet for broad-range light. Other than that, my supplies are pretty much the same below-ground as above - logs, twigs, grass, etc. You can plant pinecones, saplings, and grass for sustainable resources (you'll also find some scattered throughout the caves).

The big things you'll want to find: Rock Lobsters, Bunnymen, and the Ruins entrance (for when you want to go deeper). Rock Lobsters are your best ally against the most dangerous mob underground, Depths Worms. DWs can be located individually at times, but more commonly, they'll come in waves like the Hounds do above-ground. They have extremely high HP! They can be kited/tanked, but it's time-consuming and often results in death. Bunnymen can help also, but I find them more useful for fighting spiders and their loot drops. Bunnymen do not like it when you have meat on you (inventory or backpack), which is why I bring Chester.

Anarcho-Collectivist pigs.  Seriously.  If there's no Pig King in the pig village, it's time to move on.

Running out of touch stones, meat effigies or amulets if you can't readily replace them.

But mostly boredom, wanting to try out different world settings or mods.

For some reason... I agree as much as I hate to admit it. If there's no pig king, there's not much gold. Irl people say "But muh roads!", but in DS people say "But muh gold!".

Leik if u get ze refrence.

How much my world makes me want to punch myself in the face.

Sometimes even though I have everything I need, the layout just doesn't work so I wave it bye bye. Of course, there's nothing quite like stepping into the new world and dying to a Guardian Pig that happened to be right by where you spawned.
