Movement controls in DS pocket edition (iPhone)

Recommended Posts

The way movement orders are given now is really, lets call it "not great". In this case I'm talking about iPhone 6.

There should be some input similat to *w'a's'd* keys like on Mac/PC. My sugestion is to implement the Wayward souls way of giving orders to move - no UI design modification needed, and works like a charm.

Just touching on screen to move the character… it's not only uncomfortable (I guess you can get used to it after a while), but also tiresome. And finaly it's just bad "control design", if you have to touch the top of the screen, to make your character "go up", and again, not only it is aforementioned (tiresome+not confrotable), but also, you cover all the screen while doing that.

Just my 2 cents.

Now, that I've put way more time into the game, I can only ratify my opinion about controls.

And to give you good example on where does current game controls really fail... If there is biger fight in is foresty suroundings you can see that the problem is that not only you have to touch the area where you want the character to go, bu you have to touch and hover, because character simply starts talking about how piney the trees are. Here lies big problem, becouse either you move, but cover your sight of enviroment, or you don't move but see stuff.

... and even if it's not the top portion of the screen, it is not a satisfying way to play. You can't see stuff bassicaly and the whole "kiting" stuff when fighting becomes both impossible and unbearable basically.

I do not want to be percieved as something of a critic or something, but controls realy asks for an upgrade, and also - other than the controls, performance wise everything else seems fine.

I agree the controls are incredibly difficult to use in DS pocket addition. Too add on or emphasize what Vytauti has mentioned here is what I find most frustrating:

1. When there are multiple objects all on the same screen (e.g. A forest or base camp) it is very cumbersome to try to move the character accurately. You are constantly clicking on objects to auto-complete commands. I've harvested my bird from the birdcage about 3 million times when I am just trying to pick up eggs. This also makes avoiding mobs (e.g. hounds or spiders) when navigating very difficult through forests.

2. Using storage/cooking is also cumbersome, and takes a lot of time to try to pull the items into the crock pot, or into the icebox only to click on another object. The cook button straight from inventory seems to work intermittently when selecting.

3. Planting, adding fuel, eating, dropping, shaving, etc. once you open your inventory, it zooms in. This is great for letting you accurately select the item you would like to use, but the downfall is that it takes away a portion of the screen that you can perform the action. Everytime I try to add fuel to the fire, I have to ensure that the fire pit is at least half way up the screen or I won't be able to drag the logs into the fire pit.

This seems to be a similar set of comments through a couple different forum posts. I picked this thread, since it had the most specific title.

Like others, I suggest adding some kind of virtual joystick. The bottom left corner of the menu seems to be open for some kind of touch style d-pad. Personally I am a fan of the minecraft pocket edition d-pad, it is very inutuitive.

Other than the controls the game is great, thanks!

Problem I've been having on iPhone (not iPad) is 50% of the time, game not 'releasing' itself after doing an action using the inventory (eg 'eat') - I have to touch the main screen for inventory pause to be cancelled, and the action will then happen. Makes doing repeated tasks (like eating a stack of berries) so frustrating.

Also having the same problem with navigation as mentioned by others above - especially in areas thick with trees.

iPad is less troublensome - inventory use doesn't cause game to pause, so problem doesn't arise. Navigation can still be troublesome though when there are lots of items on screen. Makes getting around your base very tricky once a few structures are up.

Apart from these niggles, a great port - only very occasional crashes. I initially liked the action/fight controls - best way to do it as far as I could see. But now I've played for a while, I find it frustrating.

An idea: keep the action/fight buttons - but have another button that toggles character movement by device gyro? Tilt the screen to move your character? Might work!
