ShipWrecked compatibility questions for Modders

I'm not exactly sure if this post should be in the mods area or here where all the ShipWrecked stuff seems to be going.... but here goes! (These are the main questions that come to mind as a modder when seeing various screenshots and videos)

 

1: Will there be new pieces to the character anim like you did with RoG? (adding the skeleton images)

 

2: Are all items going to need updated anims for when they float in the water?

 

3: (This is a big one!) How exactly will your pets handle you going out in the ocean?

I mean... I can understand Glommer being able to follow you because he can FLY! buuuut... Does Chester swim? and this pertains to modders because I'm very obsessive about pets... I've made quite a few now but not exactly looking forward to adding brand new animations so that they can swim....... (I want them IN the boat lol)

 

4: Will there be a special function to check if the character is in the water or not? Reason I ask this is because there are a few features that a few of my characters have that I want to prevent from happening should they be out on the seas... (one good example of a current DS character would probably be if you turned into the werebeaver as Woodie while sailing.... *imagines the beaver eating the boat and then drowning*)

 

5: Will we be able to make custom add-ons to current boats?

 

6: Will this new vehicle aspect allow modders to do new things like make cars, jetpacks, and other cool things?

 

and question 7 has nothing to do with modding really... but it did pop up in my mind while watching someone play the demo... Are all the old biomes still there?

question 8 where are the dog-gone palmtreeguards?!

if anyone else has questions go ahead and ask em!

 

aaaaand if this belongs in the mods subforum is it possible to move it?

Luckily, Lavae is not in the Single Player version...

Maybe Chester can have his own little tag-along raft... or turn into MERMAID CHESTER!

I suppose boats were coded with the promised beefalo rodeos in DST TtA in mind. Though there's little to keep in mind there because singleplayer and multiplayer are two different worlds.

 

EDIT: As for items, I guess they still sink normally per default (unless they're tagged irreplacable of course). Only if they're somehow set to floating they should have (or even require) a floating animation.

Hey gang, I'll start off by saying that I haven't been involved in the development of Shipwrecked other than helping out with the PAX Demo. That said, helping support the mod community for ShipWrecked is what I hope I'll be able to do.

 

To answer some of your questions fidoop.

 

1) There will likely be some changes to the builds/anims to support the newer interactions with the water. I don't suspect this will be too difficult to port RoG character into SW though.

 

2) Yup, if you want your items to float and look like they are actually floating, I believe there will be new symbols you'll need to add.

 

3) Yeah that is a big one and I don't believe there is a known solution for this yet.

4) I suspect we'll need to have something in the map, similar to the DST function Map:IsAboveGroundAtPoint.

 

5) I don't see why not.

 

6) I would be surprised if all you awesome modders wouldn't be able to make sweet new vehicles :-)

 

7) Regarding the old biomes, I don't have any details on that at the moment.

 

It's still early days regarding modding and Shipwrecked, but more news to come closer to release!

Given how it was very possible to get single player and RoG characters working in DST, I imagine that the shipwrecked characters will be ported over almost immediately.

For the rest of it, plenty of modders have added their own content. Unless they have dramatically changed the engine, a lot of items will be easy to port over as well.
