Why must the game be so mega-hard?

Recommended Posts

Why does one die within the first two minutes if one starts in summer or in winter?

Why does one lose in the spring so quickly mental health and can nothing do against it?

Why the monster dogs already come after few days and do eat up the player? And why immediately so many, even if one has put a few in the settings?

Why does the maximum health sink if one dies in the endless mode?

Why does the rain almost never stop in the spring?

Why is autumn the only reasonable season in which one has some survival chances?

Why do the flowers grow again so slowly?

Where does one get enough gearwheels here to be able to build everything what one can build?

Why must one fertilise grass and berry bushes when one plants them somewhere else?

I'd say it's exactly the opposite? This game sure has some unique nature to it, but it's not exactly hard?

It doesn't fit with a casual gamestyle right off the bat, that's for sure. You have to accomodate with your strategy.

You have to learn the challenge; train for the challenge, and overcome the challenge.

The worst spot I found myself into is when I overwhelmed the survival aspect. It started to get really boring and if I were to spend about thirty minutes in it I'd find myself braindead, instinctively and mechanically solving every single problem I would face. Specifically the gear you have to craft to prepare from the seasons; the reward for being able to speedrun through the game felt like nothing. That's the moment I switched to PvP.

I suggest you to adjust yourself to the settings; every game has a different feel. Don't Starve achieves this through its honest nature; this isn't Minecraft where you can barricade yourself in the ground until you get hungry. You are forced to strive to survive, and that proves to give most enjoyment in the end. Help yourself until your reach the point you'd love to be a noob again; everything would feel fresh again!

So open your wings and become the beautiful butterfly you know you are! (?) This game's wonderful.

Also, if you could not get into the game because of the multiplayer circumstances, such as starting in a rough season or the lag is real, I also recommend you playing alone on a survival server until day 72. The best learning curve you gonna get.

JUST DO IT

-Shia Labouf-

It was designed to be unfair,it was designed to be ridiculously nerve breaking...If a game that was designed for players to steam rolled, that is not a good game,it doesn't have the replay value. There are options in the world menu, just edit it to the newb level, and practice practice.THERE IS NOTHING IMPOSSIBLE(so many Shia)

The fact that they make giants deal 150 hit points and they can freeze you,1 giant even got buffed to 27500 hitpoints already prove that this game is ridiculously hard.

This is what this game intended to be,not like some game that used to be steam rolled

Instead of asking question, why don't you try to solve it first?

Back in my day, (beta) I was so bad that i relied on willow (before remake) to survive!

500-ish hours of fun game-play later...

Because you're inexperienced?

You can do something about it, eat mushrooms that restore sanity, make garlands, sleep.

Hounds are a big part of the game, you should think about defense before they show up.

Because death penalty?

It's probably random, bad luck.

It is a time to prepare for winter.

Because flowers.

Somewhere around those gear horses or whatever, don't know the name.

Because it's a penalty for digging them out.

Not everything can be too easy, there's always two side of a coin, one positive and one negative, and don't even say that this game is MEGA-hard because it's not true. It's difficult I give you that, but this is a game where you learn from your mistakes.

"Why must the game be so mega-easy" - By J5.

*Ahem*

  • Autumn is laughably easy.
  • Playing winter second is easy, playing it first isn't as easy but barely wakes me up from a point of "Routine play".
  • Playing Spring is laughably easy regardless of when you start or how prepared you are.
  • Playing Summer while prepared is easy, playing it first is equally easy.
  • Why is food so common?
  • Why is everyone but Wes OP?
  • Why is it that hounds act more as room service then a challenge?
  • Why are the bosses so easy?
  • Why don't we have to drink water to survive?
  • Why don't we need sleep?
  • Why can we constantly run without stopping to breathe every so often?
  • Why can we change the settings to make things EVEN EASIER?
  • Wickerbottom.
  • Why are nightmare creatures trivial to fight?
  • Why is it that the only creature that isn't trivial to fight is the Lag Monster?
  • Why can't we have more interesting fighting like with Poison Birch Trees?
  • Furthermore, why is insanity so trivial in general?
  • Why do we only lose health when we die in Survival/Endless. The game used to be perma-death. A gentle slap on the wrist seems like a big step down from that.
  • WHY IS THE MOST DANGEROUS CREATURE NOOBS?
  • Why don't we have to carefully gather resources that will prevent animals from stealing our food supplies?
  • Why the hell don't animals attempt to steal our food supplies? Especially when no one in the DS universe knows how to make doors, locks, or houses.
  • Why are we so strong? Shouldn't we have to rely a lot more on building traps and our greater minds in order to kill things?
  • Why do we need to eat 10 full course meals a day? Why not just make food less common and reduce our need for it to 3 meals a day? That way to won't seem like we're royalty being spoon fed banquets of food daily.
  • Why are pigs cool with us existing?
  • Does Maxwell know that his world is easy? Does he take amusement in the fact that so many people die in stupid ways?
  • Why was Adventure mode as simple as "Nooo you don't get as much of this resources that we conveniently place every 2 feet!"

So in summation, Pretty please with cherries and ice cream on top make the game harder.

Why does one die within the first two minutes if one starts in summer or in winter?

If you prepare, you wouldn't.

Why does one lose in the spring so quickly mental health and can nothing do against it?

Rain Coats, Umbrellas, you have lots of ways to protect yourself from rain and it's mental effects.

Why the monster dogs already come after few days and do eat up the player? And why immediately so many, even if one has put a few in the settings?

This was multiplayer balance. My advice is setting them to be lower.

Why does the maximum health sink if one dies in the endless mode?

So you have a penalty to death.

Why does the rain almost never stop in the spring?

Because in Spring it rains a lot. Just like how it does for most of North America

Why is autumn the only reasonable season in which one has some survival chances?

Because Autumn is the season for people to prepare for winter. It's meant for preparation and relaxation.

Why do the flowers grow again so slowly?

Because flowers are flowers. And flowers don't grow like a baby sleeping.

Where does one get enough gearwheels here to be able to build everything what one can build?

Clockworks.

Why must one fertilise grass and berry bushes when one plants them somewhere else?

Because if you could just place berry bushes and grass without fertilizing it, it would mean there's no penalty to digging stuff up.

It's in my personal TODO list :)

Omg! Good idea!

Well, it might be trivial to us which leads us to request harder features in DS. I bet there is some features in the game we have made become too difficult for new players.

While you are supposed to get mad at the game for feeling unfair, some of it might actually be unfair to expect of newer players of the game to do. You can voice your frustration here, and we have the right to criticize it, but we should not blow you off like you just need to "git gud".

Basically, Dont Starve is not too difficult if you know what you are doing and should be doing, but it can be very hard for new players to learn since they have no idea what to do. Probably the first thing that will kill them is Charlie, simply because they don't know that darkness kills them. Original DS was more like a roguelike (permadeath, learn from your mistakes), but DST and the easier respawn mechanics kind of change that aspect of the game to mere frustration instead of learning from failure, somewhat like savescumming on a particularly difficult challenge in some other game - if you keep trying, you will eventually get lucky and beat it.

@Ridley, True they should be able to voice their opinion, but if the vast majority of the player base think their complaints are that of an inexperienced player nothing should be done to make their requests/demands come to fruition.

In this case all his complaints are minor and that of an inexperienced player therefore none of the things he mentioned being too difficult should be made any easier. And in this case he very much should just "git gud".

Perhaps if something was deemed to be there solely to discourage newer players such as if Charlie killed anyone that didn't have an axe by day 3 automatically. Other than that everything can be learned, DS has always been fairly hand-holdy just in it's case the hand is invisible. Instead of saying "Hey make a Science Machine" the player can view recipes that are uncraftable until they make a Science Machine, thus prompting them to do so.

The vast majority of the forums can handle most of the things Klei throws at them, which is different than the player base. Maybe this guy does need to only spend more time practicing, but I was warning against just seemingly ignoring him and skipping right to the funny pictures.

I don't think there is too much that discourages new players in the game, only obstacles that frustrate them until they surpass it, but this thread was arrogant for the most part.

Why is there Chester?  We don't need more chest slots.

Why do monsters drop anything?  Klei should make it so we have to bury them whole or lose tons of sanity.

Why does Glommer give sanity?  He's a fly monster prince thing, he should demote sanity.

Why are the character different?  They should all have Wes's stats because aren't we all human? (Looking at you WX-78)

Why does food heal us?  That doesnt happen IRL.

Why can we can run forever, need to eat a thousand meatballs a day, yet we don't need to drink or sleep, or have the reasonable urge to chisel a football?

Why doesn't Charlie kill us in one hit, and why is she inside everyone?  Shouldn't she know that last one inspires r34?

Why do we make everything with machines which in real life couldn't do anything?

Why do we have magic?

Why are we so pale?  Is Don't Starve racist?

Why is PVP a thing?  Can't we all just get along?

So many questions, yet few answers.  Mind you, most of that is a joke and should not be taken seriously.  Ridley seriously has a point as well, considering Dont Starve is hard for newcomers.  Most veterans will either verbally abuse you or make you the butt of the joke and won't bother teaching you in most cases.  Very hard to find nice people.

Why does one lose in the spring so quickly mental health and can nothing do against it?

Why does the rain almost never stop in the spring?

I just want to know why rain takes away sanity.

I understand if the characters started losing sanity once soaked, but... just the rain makes them lose it...

Have the DS characters never seen rain? Do they simply fear rain because all the dangerous things they've seen in the DS world made 'em think rain would also be dangerous in some way and, even though it clearly has no effect on them (excluding the sanity loss, of course... and leaving them soaked, that too), they still fear it, for they think one day it'll show its claws, and they don't want to live to see that day?

Actually, conspiracy theory, the DS's world rain is not JUST rain, it's a special liquid that penetrates your skin and acts like some sort of frug, but instead of giving you hallucinations (directly) it simply makes you fear it and its effects.

Now that's highly un-likely, maybe Wilson's just a scaredy cat... but I'm happy I thought of that. Made me feel like a true crazy forum dweller.

What is if one wants to get to know DST with pleasure together with a friend or relatives without having played before DS which maybe has a Tutorial? A Tutorial is with such a play, nevertheless, the least what one should be able to expect, or not? So why no Tutorial for DST? Or does this still come?

One begins the game and has no idea what to do. You look at the area on, picking a few berries and pleased that you can eat it. At some point you look at the strange construction menu and notes that it is extremely confusing. It can be seen that with the few things that have been collected, can establish a few things. The first night to survive, is a matter of luck for a newbie.

Quite honestly: DST is my first survival game. I don't know how such a game works. I know only one thing: you must somehow try to survive. What I need is a tutorial, which introduces me gently in the game mechanics and has a learning curve similar to invisible Inc.. If one knows the basic things, you can be left alone then.

But it must be said (was also of Gamestar.de): the construction menu should be much more clear and self-explanatory. You should already see the things that you still cannot produce, at least in shades of gray. In this game, you can spend not just a few days to get to know the menu, to find out what you can do here and what you need for this. This must go as soon as possible. At first glance, you should can see all objects and can immediately know what it is. And on the second glance you should can already know why you need it and what you need for this. The things you need for this - or in a dictionary. that is callable in the game - should you get an info, where you can get these things here. There should be information about the enemies in the game, how dangerous they are.

I thought by myself, Invisible Inc. is such a good game, so I want to try another game from Klei. But at the moment it is very frustrating for me. It can not be, that one must look at many Let's Plays and spend many days at the forum to get to know to play the game.

Ok, I think, that's it for the moment. Please think about it. Thank you.
