I love this game, and it is fairly realistic. Although, what if a hardcore mode was added to make it even more so?

For example:

- Fires take time to build/light

- crock pots take fuel to use (the wood under the pot)

- you must sleep at least every three days

- you need to actually make the rope leading into the caves

- use a stick when you cook things over a fire (it might not be consumed, but you have to have one to cook food on a fire)

- being able to dip into a frog pond to cool off in summer

- be able to make a tool repair kit

etc.

Additionally, although it might be a separate update, I think a thirst meter would be great. You would have to keep it up, and if it got too low your sanity would start to drop really fast and if it got to 0 you would take health damage like when you are starving.

For the thirst meter you could:

- drink from frog ponds

- use pig skin and a rope to make a waterskin to fill and drink from

- build rain barrels to fill when it rains, which you could drink straight from or fill your waterskin from.

Etc.

I don't know if you should have to boil water, but I think a thirst meter would be a fantastic add on.

I would LOVE to see these as actual vanilla add-ons (because I can't use mods), but I suppose they would make good mods for fellow realism enthusiasts. As always, what are all of your thoughts?

Ehm... Me and My team are actually making a mod called "Creeps in the Deeps", which is gonna add an underwater world together with the thirst mechanic. You'll be able to drink from rivers, collect rain and even make ice from water. We planning to add a rainwater collector together with the possibility to craft glass bottles.

I've heard you guys mention your Creeps in the Dark mod for a while now. Good luck with it; it sounds like it will be a great addition :D

Lets be honest, a lot of this stuff wouldn't make the game harder, it'd just make it a lot more tedious.

Case and point, the thirst mechanic has been brought up several times, and each time Klei has shot it down due to it being too heavy on pointless micromanagement.

True enough. I suppose a better name for this would be realism mode.

True, Klei brought up the thirst mechanic several times and shot it down BUT that was because wanted to add the thirst mechanic without adding much else to the current world. Obviously if you had to rely on only ponds and rain to drink the entire thing will be tedious !

But think it this way, what if together with the Thrist meter you add rivers, you find a way to collect water  from rain and ponds and as last you can also dive in an underwater world where's there's plenty of water ! To me this sounds cool and not tedious !

IMO the hunger mechanic already addresses any potential "thirst" mechanic.  There's no meaningful difference between being hungry and being thirsty, except for what you put inside you and how often real creatures need to do so.

The overheating mechanic is also a good analogue to thirst.

Between those two, adding an explicit thirst mechanic would just be tedium, with no particular added benefit.

Besides, you wouldn't force the poor robot to jump in a pond, would you?

I see your point. I would just like it for some more features and realism I guess. As to the pond, it sounds like WX-78 just got the short end of the straw. Although Woodie can't swim . . . Maybe to balance it out there will be a chance that if you spend too long near a pond a pack of frogs might grab you and drag you down to the murky depths below . . . XD

Fair enough but as long as i know, that difference is enough to make real creature starve to death from 1-2 days to probably more than a week.

I wouldn't force the "poor robot" to jump in a pond but i wouldn't even force it to go out and get wet while its raining ! Thats why we have umbrellas and another special item for the underwater world. Just to clarify, the entrance wouldn't be ponds anyway...

An explicit thirst mechanic would completely solve the boring season of Summer giving the chance to the player to be capable to walk around and do stuff in the WORLD instead of farming grass in its BASE. I think thats a pretty good benefit !
