I think it is derived from bad parenting, and a failed mental health. Playing video games is actually a stress reliever, depending on the video game. (Flappy bird is just stressful...) Parents say the reason is because there is so much violence in a video game. Actually, it is the anti stress thing talked about above. Take a stress ball for example, the action of squeezing it is violent, but actually has different affects. You hurt no one, and you feel better in the end. And while I agree playing a large amount of gory and violent video games could make it easier to, say, murder someone, it doesn't make people want to murder someone.
