On the Nitre Side of Things...

Recommended Posts

So this is infuriating for me. I mastered Vanilla DS and am on my way to mastering RoG after many deaths. I only have one problem:

Nitre

F*ckin Nitre. So, let me tell you what I've done and let me know what I've missed.

-Farmed every rock on the regular map: DONE!!

-Started a moleworm farm: 1/2 the time, the moleworms just dig against the wall in my farm and never make a burrow. Yes, I double checked that I dug up their original burrow, but it seems random when they behave. And even then I MAY get 1 Nitre every few days. I am more than happy to know if I'm farming them incorrectly. Oh yeah...I seem to be running out of moleworms too!!

-Caves and Ruins: Everyone likes to say

Some random idiot: "Dude! There's TONS of nitre in the cave!"

Me: "Oh really? Great! WHERE THE F*CK IS IT????" Is there a specific stalagmite than I don't know about that drops nitre because they all seem to drop everything BUT nitre.

-Earthquakes: Yeah...I'm lucky if I get 1 nitre from an earthquake.

I'm looking for an efficient method for nitre. Can someone finally answer this question in detail please?

Thanks in advance

The real question is: what to use nitre for?

It's like silk and logs. Logs are far more useful and as such, you tend to run out of them. Silk, not so much. Nitre is silk. I personally never use nitre unless making freezerpits all around the map.

I agree with Mobstar. There aren't that many uses for nitre. But if you still want and need it. I would reccomend editing your moleworm farm a bit. Try and set it up in a place with as little walls as possible. Sort a peninsula part of the map with a small wall blockig the entrance, if there is suh a place on your map. Also you can multply the moleworms by catching them and placing them. They should dig new burrows and the old ones should spawn new moleworms.

The last part im not 100% sure how it works, never done it myself. But I know its possible. Think you need to relog the game during some part of the process.

Agreed. That makes it so the nitre above-ground is pretty much all I ever need. If I feel like making gunpowder for some reason, then I might need more and need to venture underground... but otherwise, Endothermic Fire Pits are just strategically placed around the world.

Earthquakes are totally hit-or-miss, no pun intended. You've gotta spend a significant amount of time underground experiencing them to make use of their drops. If you have the time to invest in a fully functioning base underground, you should end up experiencing them enough to get good drops. If you're just popping down there every now and again hoping for loot, you'll be banging your head against the wall much of the time.

To repopulate moleworms you need to whack a moleworm, pick it up and wait for a new one to spawn from the burrow.  That might take a day, so feed your moleworms rocks or flint if they're starving.  Once a new moleworm has spawned from the burrow, dig the burrow and then drop the mole in your inventory.  Following this process I used two burrows in the forest to produce 19 burrows in my base.  Beware that two whacks with a hammer will kill a mole, so once they've built new burrows you'll probably need to kill them so that new ones spawn with full health.  Sometimes I've been able to just pick up moles that have been whacked before, so keep an eye out for that possibility.

Regarding walls, I never have that problem because my moleowrms are free-range.  If they move too far from where you want them there's a couple options.  You can whack them, dig their burrows and move them back where you want.  You can take the slower option of making more of them and placing the new ones where you want.  Or you can try to lure them in the desired direction with rocks and dig their burrows while they're away.  If there's one thing I can suggest about free-range moles, though, you might not want to put them in your base.  I have 19 moles roaming free in my base at night.  It's distracting, they can get in the way when I'm trying to cook or feed the caged bird, and once in a while they shove Willow far enough from the fire that she stops gaining sanity.  It's only a minor inconvenience but it's something to keep in mind.

Another possibility is to use a mod to refine nitre from guano just like it's done in the real world.  (Okay, usually the guano is sourced from migratory sea bird nesting colonies, but close enough.)

Gunpowder for the Giants, obviously. Especially Dragonfly, but I do not want to spend the sanity, time and possibly lives, fighting these guys every season. I found the put to sleep/gunpowder strategy works great for me, but getting the necessary 9-14 gunpowder each season is a real struggle for me.

First of all, thanks you for actually answering my question instead of questioning my motives. I felt like the people here are from the TSA at the airports.

(Klei Forums: Sir?? Why do you want Nitre? Gunpowder?? Sir, I'm going to have to ask you to step off the plane so we can ask you more questions. Take Chester with you since he causes a ruckus down in the baggage area.)

Yes, the way moleworms are actually quite tricky and your post was VERY insightful. First bit of fresh knowledge I've found on the internet about nitre. I will try your methods and let you know how they worked out. But, no I do not want to play with mods. I'm a purist. :-)

That's the only reason? You can combat giants using other methods well:

  1. Old Bell: Two of these suffice to get even the dragonfly down. They take roughly as long as gunpowder to work, and don't fire prematurely because of dragonfly's heat aura. The only drawback is that the step before and after could wreck parts of your base if you're nearby.
  2. Tooth traps: About 50 of these kill even the bearger (dragonfly hovers sadly). Couple that with a minor amount of combat, and you're good to go. I suppose you need them because of hounds anyways.
  3. Spider queens & Leifs: They're not exactly tough, but save you at least a third of the work, even if you don't support them.

GMoose doesn't drain sanity notably and as long as her egg didn't hatch, fighting her is really easy with basic equipment and a light source.

Oh, and you can feed the dragonfly with ash and the bearger with honey to make them bugger off (20 of either I think). The GMoose is generally neutral and harmless. Realisticly only deerclops is a threat you need to fight somehow, that's one giant per year.

Honestly, I no longer use gunpowder. Whilst it is funpowder, it's also difficult to install properly, and making charcoal and rotten eggs isn't particularly exciting.

Glommer is easy to kill, so are his guards (he's a side factor to me because I'm hunting werepigs every full moon anyways). Hound teeth you get over time. Leifs and spider queens, er... happen.

Sometimes, when the moles burrow into the walls, you can Save&Quit then reload the game, and they will settle down.

I haven't tried killing all giants in all seasons though. I also find it hard to get enough nitre for them all. If you don't mind missing out on all drops, maybe save on the gunpowder and just put them to sleep, then leave them to despawn.

Dragonfly and Bearger can be fed certain stuff to make them sleep. (If you already know this and just want to kill all giants, I'm sorry for not being able to suggest anything helpful re: How to get more nitre.)
