Can GOG keys be redeemed on Steam?

Recommended Posts

I saw an article in the knowledge base saying you can use Humble Bundle keys on Steam.

Can you do the same for GOG purchases? (Actually, I tried, but it won't let me.) Why is this so?

I used to hate Steam, so I mostly purchase stuff from GOG. I bought DS for some friends via GOG. (I was tweeting about dying to red beefalo butts and they got curious.) Anyway, yeah, I gifted them via GOG, thinking we can all play DST once it's released for all. That was before I found out DST is only for Steam accounts and GOG keys can't be used on Steam.

Also, Steam's region-restricted purchasing means I can't gift my friends a copy of DS even if I wanted to. These are online friends from different countries. :(

Is there really no way around this?

(PS Not sure if this is the right forum to post in. Feel free to move/lock if it's wrong.)

Actually it depends on the key. Some keys require a DRM (digital rights managements) program such as Steam.

GOG only seems to sell DRM free keys of Don't Starve, you can see it in the right summary of the selling page.

As far as I know there's no possibility to change a non steam key into a steam key, sorry. ;/

But it's been said that everybody who owns DS will get DST for free, is this only Steam restricted?

Ah, I see. Thanks for that info. :(

Yes. :( The "unofficial" DS wiki used to say it's for everyone as in everyone. It was only later that it's made clear that everyone = Steam users because Klei uses the Steam login system for Together.

Well, that sucks. Hard.

Maybe you can refund the keys and buy Steam DT keys at another site then? Guess that's your best shot here sadly.
