Do you really like RoG

Recommended Posts

Hello,

i played dst for a month

then bought ds and ds rog

Ds i loved it (better than dst, caves huge plus)

But i tried the rog, do you really like it? Its harder than ds but i cant say its more interesting. I have the perception it is wider. Biomes seem larger and you have to walk further to find anything but i think its more hard and not more challenging, i think it needs more micro manage becoming more pain than fan.

I mean still you can find ways to sit in your base with unlimited food, but thats not fun if you dont explore.

More or less i wish i could add giant bosses in normal game and play that.

:p

Also is anyone else have wilson syndrome? if i dont play wilson, i feel i am cheating...you know summoning ghosts, or magic books and stuff.

I like base DS for mods and such, it also feels a lot more RP.

RoG is really only a survival challenge, to see how long you manage to survive. Even when you're on top of things and going through all the stuff possible, it's suprisingly easy to fail and die.

I'm still fairly new to RoG, but so far I'm a big fan of it. Things like the Glommer Statue and Catcoons add a lot of incentive to explore, and the random nature of things like the tumbleweeds makes every game feel different. I'm not a big fan of dampness, though, because it feels more like a minor inconvenience than something that needs to be seriously prepared for.

I can't play regular Don't Starve without it.

It does also make gathering food and certain materials easier to counter with the harsher weather, however.... Not that getting food was ever really a problem.

Base game's (vanilla's) gameplay started being excessively repetitive after the first 36 days, when you first completed your seasonal cycle (summer-winter). Around day 150 the game reached its peak in SURVIVAL gameplay, forcing you to start base-building, because there was no possible threat that would stop you from surviving. Base-building also started being unbearable at around day 400, when you literally had to do the same thing for tens of hours to get a good and large base down.

ROG's content made the experience fresh when you first started playing it, and it came with extended seasonal cycle and new survival mechanics, which not only made it less repetitive, but there were also more things to worry about in the first years, making days pass very quickly and not feel grindy. To put that into perspective, imagine that 150 days would mean only 2 years in RoG, compared to 4 years in Vanilla. And you still would not have passed the survival phase of the game.

ROG's new mechanics, combined to their new items and creatures, innovated the base building experience. Not only in base-building so-to-speak, but also in combinations. Multiple items, combined to an existent mechanic, often result into very cool farms (mole farm, fire farm, butterfly farm, and tons more, you can check most of them here) also helped getting things down faster or more efficient, understanding the game better, and making the experience funnier. Lots of people started having problems with boredom and lack of things to do at day 1500, opposed to 300-400 in vanilla. Even so, there are more things to learn.

To answer the question, I love RoG. It's a must have.

I love RoG.

Tried playing a "vanilla" experience on DST with some friends to re-introduce them to the game, and I realized how much I missed RoG.  Giants, birchnutters, desert biome, even the dreaded frog rain.  All of them combine to make the experience so much more enjoyable.

I was initially too scared to play Reign of Giants, you certainly shouldn't start out with this. After a week of playing the base game and reading about RoG I decided to delve in.

Never looked back and I only consider RoG the "full game." Learn to kite those boss creatures and you're all set. I have been playing for two months, have a ~150 day world and have never once entered the caves. There is still much more for me to explore and I love that feeling.

Video games are just a carrot on a stick for humans lol...

I do have "Wilson Syndrome" though I think... I just can't bring myself to play anyone else seriously. I played a Woodie world and it was fun, but it just didn't feel "right." I have no explanation for that. If I ever make it to unlock Maxwell, I would probably play him or maybe even Wes for the challenge but I understand the need to not feel "cheaty."

Oh yeah, I definitely felt the same way. Playing as anyone other than Wilson felt like cheating, and I only ended up playing as the other characters once or twice. I'd highly recommend Willow for your first Adventure Mode victory, though, as her lighter and fire sanity bonus makes Adventure Mode much more manageable.

That, and Wes. He's a simple, non-gimmicky character that adds just a liiittle bit more fun to the game.

Just like all of you say, RoG can twice the time until the game gets repetitive, or more, with the constant giant's fear I don't feel safe in any season before the day 100, and the summer was a pretty "cool" surprise, with it the developers show the most imaginative and sadistic side of themselves. Now in Together the time until the game gets repetitive is increased again, I hope the caves, the Through the Ages and a some awesome mods content bring a game even more fresh even for players like me who has been played this from the vanila's beta

...

But she can only eat meat!

/slapped in the face

/man down

She's the second best character in the game at gathering meat, though.  And I love her warrior personality.

I can't wait for Samurai Wigfrid!
