Better ranged weapons

Recommended Posts

you know what would be cool? a flintlock pistol. darts are consumable and costly for what you get, but useful if you need then every once and a while. boomerangs are a nice ranged weapon, but do little damage and are risky to use. the ice staff is really only to augment melee, and the fire staff is dangerous to use. the only really good ranged damage source are friendly spitters with webber, but thats a stretch as a weapon and character specific. i think a flintlock with about 50 uses and 125 damage would be good. it has good durability so it can be used often, and does alot of damage so it can take down big creatures (or for easy hunting) the downside is that it takes a long time to reload, you have to craft ammo for it, its loud and draws attention, and it wont fire if it gets wet in the rain. the crafting recipies could be along the lines of 2 sticks, a board, 2 gold, and flint, and the cartriges are 1 papyrus, 1 gunpowder, and either a rock, red gem or blue gem for regular, fire, and freeze respectively. you could also do one with thulcite for 200 damage and one for the other gems. craftable at the alchemy engine.

what do you think? feel free to post any other ideas for better ranged weapons.

I'm not so keen on the idea of having easy ranged weapons, but it could be neat.

I'd suggest the weapon and the ammo could be separate items. The pistol is crafted at 0% and goes up to 100% when you load it (Similar to refuelling a lantern) and goes from 100% to 0% for every shot. The refuelling animation serves as the reload delay. (Also making it potentially useful to carry a lot of flintlock pistols, just like real life.)

As for ammo, I like the idea of different types for different uses, but perhaps in a way that doesn't step on the toes of the fire/ice staff or other objects.

One idea:

-Silver Bullets. Crafted from Gunpowder and Gold (Thank goodness for alchemy) increased damage against Hounds, Werepigs and Glommers.

the way i think the loading might be done is that you have a loaded and unloaded version. using the unloaded activates the loading animation and consumes a cartridge, and using the loaded version fires it. i like your idea for the ammo being very different though. maybe a fire gem could be an AOE explosive shot instead of a fire shot.

They should add an atlatl to the game. Or at least javelin of some sort. Imagine bringing down game and monsters with an atlatl or javelin! Not sure I really like the idea of a flintlock though it would work and I would still welcome it into the game.
