To Klei developers about DS soundtracks! Important!

Recommended Posts

So, since there's FMOD Designer tool and because the music files were fsd at first I thought that yeah, seems legit enough that I could be able to edit the soundtracks by the very instruments which make them up. Turns out that... no, the soundtracks are there only whole put together, meaning that if you wanted to make an alternative of the soundtracks, you would need to recreate the soundtracks with individual instruments on an editor such as Garage band yourself... and then edit it. It's literally making original music from what you can hear and then editing it, which is kind of what Dragon Wolf Leo did on steam with his Dusk and Night soundtracks. To that I say; 1) too much effort 2) pointless 3) you'd probably not get your soundtracks to sound like the originals fully to edit your own from there. If the devs gave us the music files with individual music instruments separated and possible to edit on FMOD designer, things would be much easier and I would say that a lot of people would be making more modded DS music. Otherwise, we have nothing to work with! We have the DS files such as animations, program files and textures available just in front of us in data folder, but not the soundtracks; those are put together and impossible to edit.

So, Klei developers. Me and I'm sure some other people would love to have the soundtracks separated with individual instruments to edit. I have an idea of an alternative Winter Working music, which I could say would sound pretty good, but I first need the original Winter Working soundtrack separated for editing in FMOD Designer. I hope at least one of the developers hears about this, because I cannot express my composed soundtracks without this.

I see your problem. However, as well as I see the strong points of your argument, I see the weak points too. You're actually asking the game creators to re-create the whole soundtrack from various instrumental elements one by one, like Beatlab does, right? Well, if I'm right that would took a lot of time, patience. Things that the developers are lack due improving their games. One the other hand.

Are you asking them to do the hard part of the job instead of you? If they would be able to re-record the soundtrack from its elements, like a single bass drum and much more, wouldn't they have to put much effort, pointlessly to it? I'm concerned about that's even possible to re-create the soundtrack  from its single instrumental elements and put it in the game as it is then let the game handle it, like a pianist who have to press every key as it is written. This is what I think about your idea. Don't get me wrong. It would be very fascinating to see such a soundtrack that can be edited freely and easily but it's technically no possible to bring off. Excuse me if I'm intense but as a photography modell it's a part of my job to tell this opinion of mine if it comes to art. Creating soundtrack is art.

I would think that developers have spare copies of the game files which are separated instrumentally. I would consider that the soundtracks were made via computer program and not an actual orchestra playing the soundtracks, which is why I assumed this. If they do not have such files, fine, I guess me or someone else from the modding community could try to do this. I am just not sure whether devs actually have or do not have files separated instrumentally and if they do, then in that case it really would be pointless to make the soundtracks from scratch with instruments separated.

That makes sense.

If you just want the instruments that are being played, just go find a decent MIDI of whatever song you're looking for. I doubt Klei even has the sort of files you're looking for. And if they do, as unlikely as it is, you'd probably be better off trying to contact @Mattesque  than posting a thread on the DST boards.

Well, we're currently in this beautiful thing called the internet, which was originally created for the sharing of knowledge. Nowadays, even, it's become a lot easier to access such information through a certain search outlet known as "Google" I believe if you would like to further your knowledge on the file format known as "MIDI" it would be within your best interests to submit a search query regarding the subject into said search engine.

Also XirmiX you do realize the sound track for Don't Starve was outsourced to Vince de Vera and Jason Garner? They are not official employees for Klei.

Also, what XirmiX is asking for is definitely not commonplace. #neverhurtstoaskthoughiguess

You really should take other peoples advice when they give it to you. A MIDI file is, as Flare described, essentially sheet music put into a form a computer can read. MIDI's files, unlike normal music files, contain a set of instructions for playing music using sounds that are on the PC itself, as opposed to just containing the song played in full. As such, while you *can* convert a MIDI into an Mp3 or other file, you cannot convert the other way around. Considering you don't even know what a MIDI is, you probably don't need one in the first place. (MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface by the way.)
