March 30th Update - 132031 132089

We've just got a few bugs fixed this morning but we're still hard at work.

Here's what we fixed in today's update:

  • Waterballoon animations fixed
  • Controller support for waterballoons and fixed.
  • Disabled all attacks for ghosts
  • Flingomatic wasn't extinguishing farms correctly.
  • Fixed Teenbird tuning values.
  • Lightning no longer interrupts the evening fade-to-black.
  • Spacebar no longer tries to pick withered grass.

Original Post:

Hi everybody! As you know we've been hard at work on integrating Reign of Giants into Don't Starve Together, and we're just about ready to launch it! The main challenge at this point is that RoG is a whole lotta game and we need your help testing it to make sure we didn't break things as we converted it over to multiplayer.

It's not quite ready for prime-time yet, but if you want to hop in to our testing branch, we'd really appreciate letting us know if anything is crashing, broken, or missing.

Instructions for getting the RoG test version:

  • You must already own Don't Starve Together. (Reign of Giants not required.)
  • The game must not be running.
  • In your Steam client right click on Don’t Starve Together Beta and select “Properties”
  • Select the “Betas” tab
  • Enter the code “rogtogetherbeta” in the text box and press the “Check Code” button. You should see a confirmation message that the RoG_Together_Beta is now available.
  • In the drop-down under menu select to opt into RoG_Together_Beta. You should see a message that you have successfully opted into the RoG_Together_Beta. Press “Close”.

WARNING!

This uses the same save slots as the normal game but the saves aren't compatible. Make sure you create a new save file for your RoG test as the save files won't transfer back to the normal game.

WARNING!

Please keep all bug reports and related conversation in this thread so that all the feedback related to this special testing branch is in one place. Thank you!

Current known issues:

  • Bearger, Dragonfly, and Goosemoose (Moosegoose?) are still missing, they'll show up sometime soon though!
  • Moggles are missing due to technical challenges with night vision.
Major changes from single-player Reign of Giants to be aware of:
  • Fire spreading has been rebuilt to be slower/preventable but still threatening.
  • Deerclops shows up all winter long to harass everyone's bases.
  • Heat stones have been reworked to more clearly display if they'll help you or not. The graphics change to show if the stone is warmer or colder than the current ambient temperature.
  • Updated smallbird lifecycle so they can grow up in the wild.
  • Crafting menu has been altered to be more dynamic, so scroll arrows only show when needed. Mouse wheel also works on it!
  • Full moon has been retuned to 1 night every 22 days, starting on the 11th day.
  • Flingomatic "off" modes has been turned into "emergency" mode.
  • The Old Bell and Bigfood are absent from multiplayer due to their extreme destructive potential.
  • There are also many small changes and fixes, but keep your eyes peeled for anything weird!
  • We will be continuing to address balance and tuning issues for multiplayer, so your feedback is appreciated!
Thanks for your help, everyone! We're excited to get RoG out to you!

Don't forget to post your feedback in this thread. The test branch is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Dedicated server instructions:

If you are running your server through the steam interface: Simply go through the above process with the Don't Starve Together Dedicated Server in the tools list to join the rog_together_beta branch and launch the server.

If you are running from the command line using steamcmd:

Launch steamcmd and run:

app_update 343050 -beta rog_together_beta -betapassword rogtogetherbeta validate
Further information can be found at: https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/SteamCMD

Thanks @Kzisor!

Moles are back in, not sure about moggles. A small word update is needed there. Also keep up the good work!

Same with the Ice Flingomatics. We now have the "Emergency Mode" according to the last hotfix information for RoG, so technically we should have a switch now.

Keep up the good work, Klei! I am gonna keep waiting for Giants to appear.

EDIT:

So heres some things that started to bother me:

I noticed the pan flute spawns at Glommer's Statue, but whats more odd is that even though mandrakes data are inside, and its still not available to get them normally, why is the recipe there?

0tTSCVB.jpgRed ring of being damaged stuck on. Dedicated server on separate machine, xbox controler in use ,started to starve , logged out and back in very quickly , ate and healed. It was resolved by logging out and back in again. No idea if its do to this update (132031)

Keep up the good work!

@AquaAtia Moggles aren't in at all. That was pretty much the first thing I tried spawning in DST since I was dead curious how Charlie would work with someone having night vision.

No bugs to report right now, but I do have a balance question. Not fire related, but I hope it isn't too off-topic. Is there any intention to modify the behavior of befriended spiders?

I watched someone pop into a server, befriend a spider army, and proceed to make the base camp uninhabitable to other characters due to spiders being hostile. On a No-PVP server. As much as I hate to say it, It looks like Webber could easily become the new Willow with that.

can harvest items and pick up stuff with a full inventory and an item held with the cursor
This was introduced with the patch that made it so you could no longer act on things in the dark. Personally... I like it.

Okay, first time playing in a week or so because it's been hard to get everyone online for a stretch of time. I will try to make this fast and if I post up anything that's already been mentioned before I'm sorry. I don't have time to back-read, I'm really pushing it on time as I need to be up early but still have far too much to do tonight (and it's already so late. Why do I do this to myself?)

Just so there is here: We started playing at roughly 21:15 Pacific on March 30th.

My friend was very nice and screencapped this for me. As usual, I hosted the server and it was not an issue for me, but for both clients the farms were facing southeast when they should have been facing south. This was not an issue any of the other times we played but that was last a week or so ago.

We all feel like there was something we mentioned super early on that was odd but none of us can remember exactly what it was right now. We should have noted it down somewhere but of course I forgot to. If any of us remember, I'll come post it back up.

For now, I am off! (Also, very nice to see we can turn the flingomatics on and off again.)

This is from 27th update (just played 12 hours ago, I believe it was not this version):

Burning trees which can spread to any other thing takes TOO LONG. However, trees that just burn and have nothing else to spread are taking normal time. I have spend almost whole night (in the autumn, so it was a short night) extinguishing a smoldering tree, losing huge chunk of my health (I had to pat it about 5-6 times). My friend was burning two trees next to each other, which burnt and finished maybe quarter way into the night (I was protecting one single sapling, as I thought I could => mistake!).

Next time we tried this was 15 days into the game. I was patting a tree - bottleneck - where the fire would spread everywhere which caused me to just die due to overheat + pat damage. There is was no indicator of the damage taken (so I believe I wasn't getting damaged from overheating) and just dying next to a burning tree was not the best experience, as my friend who took over my job to pat the very same tree died shortly afterwards :(.

One bug:

  • Markers such as Glommer and pengull spawns don't appear on the client-side of the map.

Do you mean the Glommer statue, or the flower, or the Glommer itself? Host and I (client) can both see the statue. Haven't managed to get a flower yet though. (We keep losing map knowledge due to death - playing in Wilderness mode - so we have to find the statue by memory again, and only remember to try when full moon night starts. We promptly arrive when day breaks. Now I wonder whether I just didn't see the flower.)

Host and I (and another client player friend) noticed the same about the ice patch for pengulls, though. There's even a bug report on it! http://forums.kleientertainment.com/topic/49897-gameplay-pengulls-place-is-not-visible-for-client/

----

Talking about Full Moon. I read on Wiki that with RoG, normal flowers should turn into evil flowers during full moon. They don't though. Should I make a bug report on that? (That, in combination with bees not becoming homeless by catching - see http://forums.kleientertainment.com/topic/52481-gameplay-rog-no-homeless-bees/ - makes it somewhat difficult to get Evil Flowers.)

----

For some more general feedback. My friends and I don't have enough experience with RoG to notice any change in fires spreading. We dug through the wiki to get information and build and use things that help with the added stuff.

Our Flingomatics work fine, after the first Summer (and running out of grass) we stocked up a big pile of grass and survive the seasons fine. What kills us is monsters (Mc Tusk - why did we set them to 'more' again? Oh, because in some previous game "default" only gave us one hut.), and then trying to get back to the camp from the random spawn point we end up with the new character. Half frozen/overheated, Mc Tusk in our base finishes me off easily. ;P

It would be nice if we could build a definite spawn point for Wilderness Mode.

It would also be nice to record (and then re-learn) map knowledge. (I'm surely not the first to suggest that, though.)

Oh, and it would be really nice to have some way to exchange all the goods we pile up. (We set most other stuff to 'more' too, now we're drowning in goat horns and hound teeth.) Maybe the easiest would be if the Pig King just accepted anything but does not return gold for everything. Poop, evil flowers, random seeds, anything that can be used up more easily would be a nice return.

Overall, we are having much fun. : ) Thanks for all the work you put into the game!

(Edited because I misclicked submit instead of preview at some point.)

By clicking Q and E you can change perspectives in-game.

That's probably it.

Bug:

* Seems it crashed for me twice. It looks as if when I go insane (at the stage when shadow creatures attack me) and I open crock pot, the game crashes. I think at least that's the reason why the game crashed for me, but I might be wrong. Either way, this is most probable.

Never mind that. This is most likely the bug (crash):

* When a shadow creature spawns during Summer and I have active Ice flingomatics, the Ice flingomatics will shoot at farms, grass etc and if the spawned shadow creature (Terror beak or Crawling horror) spawn or are near the stuff that the Ice flingomatic(s) is/are extinguishing, then the Shadow creatures would freeze, but they don't, which is intended, but because of Ice flingomatic's freezing feature for mobs, this causes a crash.

Also, I should point out, that any mob (say spider or a koealefant) which has been previously frozen via Ice flingomatics will be frozen instantly the next time you enter the game. Again, because of this I'm suggesting that Ice flingomatics don't actually freeze any mobs, but instead take some health from them or just scare them away.

Ok, forget what I said above completely, it seems the crash has to do with the bug with the withered farms not being possible to harvest at all, which I sent to Ipsquiggle my DST file code for. My game keeps crashing because of this. I'm hoping that it gets fixed sooner or later. Now I have all my farms stuck and not growing/not possible to harvest while withered. Just great :c

This was happening to me and my room mate - playing on a LAN server.

We twisted and turned our maps to try and get the perspectives to line up but they never did.
