How to Lights Out ?

Recommended Posts

Hello, I have a few questions,

Who has played Lights Out mode and who managed to start off ? How did you do ?

I tried three times, once with Webber then with Woodie (the Werebeaver doesn't help). Every time I died after 0 or 1 day. I did my very best, I don't know how to do it, there seems to be no way of doing it. Please give tips thank you :'(

(Just to give an idea of my level, I'm fairly good at the game, I play RoG, I made a houndius shootius once, I think I can survive pretty much indefinitely if I don't try too hard in the caves, etc. My best is at 210 days with WX-78 in RoG. I'm just getting a bit bored, of course.)

Feel free to engage in a discussion about Lights Out in general.

To be perfectly honest, I thought about it and I wondered if I should make a very simple mod that gives you a lantern at the start, just to be able to start without being 99% sure of dying in the first few days. But I need to know how other people feel about Lights Out first. Maybe such a mod would be ridiculous to make, as it would ruin the primary intent of Lights Out.

Well, i survived without that much issues to day 10 but forgot to take a torch and died :(

What i did : get the maximum of your starting point until your firecamp dies, then use torches/firepits while following a road(and gathering as much resources as possible).

At this point, you should have some twigs/grass/logs and misc items in your inv, search for one of the 3 biomes : Birchnut forest, mosaic or marsh to get the cave entrance.

And once you're in the cave, focus on gathering the small forest patches and it's pretty much the same as normal underworld. Once you have a good base, you can do mogles/lantern and go to the overworld to do what you want :-)

edit : you have pretty much everything needed to survive on the caves, spiders, food(bunny/shrooms/rocklobsters), ...rocks! and some scarce plants. The only hard point is the farms.

Webber is pretty good at this, cause spiders are out during the night.

I use Wendy, personally. The less sanity drain from the darkness is kind of nice. I made it to my first Winter after a few attempts, but didn't have enough resources at that point to take on the Deerclops.

Caves help a lot though, I find. Especially since Fireflies are finite while Lightbulbs are not..

My top priorities in Lights Out are sanity and light management (as those are the two largest changes in this mode).  I jumped into a cave to get the materials to make a miner hat and lantern quickly.  In addition, I made sure to get Glommer the first full moon to help with sanity.

While typically I will explore for 20+ days before setting up camp,  in this case, I made one as soon as finding the location of caves, Glommer's statue, and MacTusk.  After finding those, I camped close to a cave entrance which also had Mac Tusk Hunting Party near.

Doing so, I was able to quickly get lightbulbs (I found myself traveling between cave/overworld more often then I usually do).  While during Winter, I could try getting as many Tam O'Shanter hats as possible and stockpile ice when I wasn't doing that.  Ice keeps indefinitely in a freezer, so I consider that one of the most important food resources.

If I remember correctly, I also made an effort to visit the Ruins much sooner then I typically do.  Was able to craft multiple Thulecite Suits which I wore for the +3.3 sanity regeneration (switched into different armor when being attacked).

By that time, I had pretty much negated the worst parts of Lights Out.  I did carry around a lot more extra items at all times though (Tam, Thulecite Suit, Lantern, Miner Hat, Slurtle Slime, Lightbulbs).

Edit:  I played with WX-78.  The gears definitely helped restore sanity in the early days but it was a pain until I found some.  The easiest characters for this mode would be Maxwell (sanity), Willow (light), Webber (spider friendly).  While the best character to experience Lights Out would probably be Wilson because his characteristics don't make it easier or more difficult.

Thanks to everyone who posted here, it's great to see how more experienced players cope with the game. I don't communicate much with any regular players and my friends don't like Don't Starve, so it's really interesting.

What I really need to start doing is getting used to living in the caves. That's the main thing you made me understand. I usually dont' do that as I already used a ton of resources to build a complete camp on the surface, and I really can't find enough food or other resources in the caves so I didn't see the point. For Lights Out I knew I would need to go down at some point, but just to get lanterns and moggles.

More questions for you guys:

Would Wickerbottom be a good character for Lights Out ? Even though it doesn't feel very pleasant to play an old lady, not needing a science machine would be a good thing, right ?

How do I use a tool when it's always dark and all I have is a torch for light ?? Do I need to set a forest on fire each time I want to chop down one tree ??

@Mobbstar Ooooh... Oooooooooooooh.

Never played as Willow. Only once, when I began Don't Starve. Hated it as she set fire to my base all the time, and also I don't find her very... cute. (sorry willow fans) But now that I understand the game better she could be a good character to try again.

@orian34 Seems like a good plan ! Made me understand the major importance of caves.

Also congrats for your work on Hero in the Dark, you and your co-modders ! I'm eager to play it, but I really need to figure out how to prevent that crash at start, I suspect to have messed with some stuff in the game when I made my own mod...

@The Letter W You guys seem to be pure master race pro not starvers... I can't even survive in a normal game as Wendy because she's so weak and Abigail is so aggressive (Even though she's one of my favorite characters, for her concept and story) And I see why you would play her, I always do in Together. But just to prevent sanity drops, I don't know if I would dare in Lights Out :S But thank you, at least I know it's possible ! Sorry for your deerclops problem ^^

@SmellyBacon Sanity isn't my main problem, I can usually deal with a few shadow monsters. I don't think playing with Maxwell would be cheating in Lights Out, because the grue and cave worms insta-kill you if you're not protected... Other than that he's completely cheaty about sanity I agree.

@StaypuftMMM While looking for forum topics about Lights Out, I found your topic on original Don't Starve challenge runs. Although I loved the idea and wanted to try them, I shivered at the monstrous difficulty of your challenge ideas. You must be a top level pro player at this game. I don't think I can do it as well as you did, but you gave me an idea of how elements play a different role in Lights Out so it will definitely help me.

About WX-78, I made my best runs in normal DS with him, and after two runs reaching day 200 and the ruins, killing every giant and being indestructible I am a bit bored of his overpoweredness. So I think I'll pick Webber since I really love his concept and I want to go further than my best with him (around 70 days in RoG), but if the sanity is too much of a problem then I'll go with Wilson.

in the caves, the patches will have light(don't ask me, it's magic). For webber sanity, find green shrooms and no problem. His low sanity cap allow easy jumps from insanity to perfectly sane.

I tried webber lights-outing once ;_; Charlie bit me.

Also, what is hero in the dark? I heard about up and away but never of this, why is that?

You can search a little on the sub-forum :)

Also, i can't answer that for you but i think it's because we were too busy working to take time for advertising the mod.

Thanks for the kinds words!

As for whether Wickerbottom would be good for Lights Out depends on the player (what is important to him/her).  She does have the advantage of not needing a Science Machine, so you can make some important necessities immediately.  When I explore at the start, I like to have a backpack and shovel in order to gather berry bushes, grass, twig trees as I go.

On the other hand, she can't sleep.  For the entirety of your game she will be unable to take advantage of tents, straw/fur rolls etc.  For me, I'd rather rough it out in the early stage and be able to sleep.  Sanity management is pretty important for me though (especially in Lights Out).

If you haven't played a lot in caves as you mentioned, I might suggest you try that before Lights Out.  Trying to stay inside the Caves/Ruins as longs as possible is great practice for Lights Out.  You still have the option to go topside when needed.  Maybe try and leave only for certain things like Glommer (although, it never survives long in caves from my experience), Tam O'Shanter, manure, a bird (for birdcage).

With my cave run, I have Webber.  He has been invaluable with all the spiders in the place.  Webber also helps with making fishing rods from his silk.  Never really fished above ground before and living underground as taught me how important it can be.  Webber does have low sanity though.  I traveled above ground each winter for a couple days (trying to get the Tam) but with no luck.  His sanity can be a bit of a problem but I think I have solved it despite my circumstance.  I made my home at a pre-existing cave camp and have caught (w/traps) and dried tons of frogs that exit the pond every day.  Eating the small jerky works as a stop gap for my lack of Tam O'Shanter.

Lastly, you mentioned playing with WX-78 too much and have gotten tired of him.

I typically play with him as well because I love his spoilage benefit and that he can eat gears (non spoiling sanity/health/hunger boost).  Basically, I love anything about the game that can reduce the work in finding, planting, harvesting, and preparing food.  Really wish I could alter him so he has average stats with no water damage to balance him out though.  I tried the WX-78 overhaul mod but it seems to not work properly and my character is stuck at being maxed out with everything (when I eat the proper item to lower his attack or speed ability it won't decrease).

Anyway, good luck in whatever you do.  Take care.

Alright, I'm currently doing a lights out run and I had a few questions.

First, it is now full moon and Glommer hasn't spawned plus I'm not getting the light effect the full moon usually gives, I still have to carry my lantern around. Is this a bug?

My second question is about farming, what can grow where? I have a base set up in the caves.

My last question is about summer, how does overheating work? Since it's night all the time will that lower my temperature enough not to take damage? And will stuff smolder (I believe that's the word for it)?

Flare2V did 1000 days of Light's Out. It's not that impossible.

My suggestion, try getting a source of light as fast as possible. I always rush lanterns, and as always going to caves to get light bulbs can be annoying, I stay in caves a lot.

See this video if you are really having problems:

Hello everyone ! I really appreciate how fruitful this discussion is, all of you are either learning or giving great tips to others that don't just apply to Light Out but also lead one to think again about their habits in Don't Starve.

So I gave Lights Out a try with help of the new secret knowledge that I received here, with Webber, and got as far as day 22 ! Winter will surely be hard. But the main problems in this run are the two annoying glitches that happen regularly and either mess up the experience or just drive me to death if I don't cheat. See further below.

m3TfOiE.jpg

So there seems to be a cynical pattern with my season start: everytime I start a run that is bound to be difficult like Lights Out, it's Spring. And everytime I start a game that is bound to be easy anyway (like playing as WX-78..!!!!) then it's Autumn. As if Maxwell was making fun of me on that many levels.

So here I go, Spring start, but I'm quite lucky :

VBl9Xd7.jpg

I spawned next to this, and the pigs aren't even there. Maybe because it's always night, or because they didn't spawn yet. So I make myself a good stock of berries and I start progressing. I get hit by Charlie at some point because I didn't do well with torch swapping, but other than that I manage to find the caves at the right moment, so I hop in before the rain eats up too much of my weak sanity.

And here's the first glitch, a glitch I was expecting as I met it multiple times already. The season unsync, as I would call it. You know that it's Spring in my world, right ? Well, down there in the caves, it is Autumn. At the same day, but Autumn. You can see this thanks to the Season Clock mod that I use. (I don't think it is caused by that mod, as it is pretty solid and probably just checks the state of the world without changing it. And of course if I go back up, it will be spring. This happens to me EVERY time I play in RoG. The seasons are split opposite between the surface and the caves, so if it is spring up, it is autumn down. And if it is winter up, it is SUMMER. Down. And vice versa.

So as annoying as it is, it just means that it won't rain inside all the time. Heh. Well don't mind if I continue.

As someone stated before, caves are bugged to give you light from the outside even in Lights Out. It REALLY helps, but in my opinion it would've been more realistic if it wasn't the case. I find a cave camp with a fridge and a chest at a distance from the cave entrance, which gifts me with my first lantern. The permanent light source offered by the light bulb plants is very convenient too. I wasted my spider eggs at the entrance but it's fine.

QwXEWJz.jpg

I can easily find some green mushrooms around to keep my sanity up. I don't have much food, and I'm still having problems with this. I didn't make farms and I think I'm pretty bad at getting food in these conditions. There are not as many worms as I imagined because they are actually the equivalent of hounds but in the caves, and I didn't even know. Also I don't know if I'm doing it right, but mushrooms don't seem to grow back. (I'm gonna die)

So I'm at day 22, Winter is there (in the caves at least...) and the glitch will really mess me up because it's summer up there, and I can't go find a koalefant to get a puffy vest. The best I can get is a breezy vest, but I'm too late and I will surely die from the heat if I go up.

znQYUrZ.jpg

Here's the second glitch. This one kills me if I don't cheat. Whenever I sleep in a spider den, the temperature instantly goes up very close to its maximum. I can see the temperature thanks to the Always on Status mod. 45°C and you overheat around 30°C. Then, it goes down extremely slowly, and if I don't cheat using the console to change temperature it is certain to kill me. Even making a cold fire doesn't decrease the temperature as it should, so I doubt it is normal, because seriously. Why. (Webber says himself that spider hair isn't very warm)

kYfUGjb.jpg

BUT I might be the one to blame for this one. I don't know what causes it exactly but it might be the Temperate Caves mod that I forgot to disable after starting this run (haha, I'm full of mods, sorry I'm disgusting). I removed it before winter started in this run. Either it's a real glitch in RoG that I never had happen, either the mod did something permanent to the caves. I suspect it to have completely removed a component or something, and it wasn't recovered after I removed the mod. The glitch still happens in this game.

CW1oqGB.jpg

And that's it ! I will probably die in winter because all I have is a winter hat, but it taught me a lot of things and it was a very fresh experience, much more thrilling than my usual crushing of all living matter as WX-78 in regular RoG, haha.

We can keep the thread alive, I will answer the last of your posts a bit later, I need to do my homework. See you guys, xoxo.

Do you have that notorious pig torch mod installed? It is known to mess with temperature

Is this only happening with dens, and not with your tent? Then it's the desperate sleepover mod thing mod

Also, grats on surviving the first day night 24 hours :p

@Weird Wanderer Thanks bro, you taught me how to do it. I feel stupid for not even trying this. I was too much of a wuss about sanity.

@Mobbstar Thanks ! No, I never installed any of these two mods. But oddly enough, yes, it happens only with spider dens. Tents don't do anything to the temperature.

@Dipps Interesting. I had seen some 1000 days videos but hardly imagined someone doing this in Lights Out. I guess that's only for the purpose of making a video about it, I really wouldn't put some much time in one run !

@StaypuftMMM I rarely sleep in normal runs, so I thought it wouldn't be too bad with Wicker, but I find myself sleeping more than I ever needed to in Lights Out. You're perfectly right. Plus, not needing a science machine isn't that helpful since you absolutely need your primal resources for torches. I died with Woodie at first because I made a backpack and ran out of torches. The End, haha.

Well I just played a bit more and got used to cave dwelling ! I'm doing good, way better than I thought I would in my previous post ! Webber is excellent for this mode because spiders don't attack him and he can eat monster meat. Thanks again, it's always great to read your posts.

Thankfully, I have never ran into the glitches you are experiencing.  The unsynched seasons issue would be a deal breaker for me though and I would have to restart worlds until fixed.  While I do use mods, it sounds like you have some ones that I don't.  So I would suggest that they may be the cause.  Might try restarting a world without the mods that make major changes to the world (having the ability to sleep in a spider den, temperature controls, set pieces, etc.  As someone else mentioned, they can cause problems.

You may also try setting your world to "Autumn Start" and seeing if that forces both above/below ground to be the same.

Unfortunately, your current world may not be salvageable from the glitches you have but hopefully you can stop future save files from having them.

Looks like you have been persevering pretty well despite those issues!

Q1:  Full Moon's are problematic in Lights Out mode (at least that has been my experience.  There were instances when the moon effect wasn't happening (as you mentioned) and I needed to exit the game and start it up again to have it work properly.  Along with that, I had to exit the game and return again in order to have the effect disappear after a Full Moon.

Q2:  I'm not 100% (so maybe someone else can weigh in here) but I always placed growables (trees, grass, farms underneath the rays of light in caves.  You may be able to grow things elsewhere in caves but possible it takes longer? In Lights Out, I have everything above ground and it grows back overtime even without any light).

Q3:  From what I recall, overheating will still happen (I think it is lessened a little though) and you can take damage.  Same rules applies for smoldering.

1 : Yeah, it's a known glitch...StaypuftMMM already answered that.

2 : Sadly enough, klei did not made the plants having any restrictions. The only thing you need to know is that you can't plant them in any turf type(only grassy ones) and winter/withering from summer. Also, you still need rain for the mushrooms(that only happens during spring).

3 : Oddly enough, the caves are overusing the temperature. So in winter, they are colder and in summer, it's hotter(unless they did something since). Also, smoldering works by the player presence in summer, whatever you are, it will work if the game is in summer.

So, the underworld is an overworld without the overworld's features(physical things).
