Meat Effigy - Scarecrow/Protector? & Pumpkin Lantern in Autumn?

Recommended Posts

Back in Aug 2013, when DS was just starting out, I thought that when you build a farm plot, the crops were susceptible to being eaten by crows so I built a meat effigy as a kind of scare crow (I had the knowledge to build a meat effigy but not have the knowledge that crows do not, in fact, affect farm plots whatsoever because I was over thinking things because I was at the height of my discovery stage -- not relying on the wikis FTW)

Anyway, I realized that that wasn't the case but I did have a neat looking scarecrow (that didn't function as a scarecrow) so I was wondering if we made this into a thing...

Since in DST, there are more ways to get revived and for cheaper so why not give the meat effigy another function?

If this were to happen, we would have new things to do like guard our farm plots (aside from protecting them from smoldering/burning in RoG Summer) and pest control! You could even maybe make it wear hats!

Hmm... by default, it has a chance to reduce the number of birds that fall in that area by a few percents (10-20%?) because birds/gobbler can eat/peck at crops (as proposed above)... this chance is increased by having it wear a Straw Hat to simulate a farmer at work... hmm or...

  • Straw hat - to deter crows more
  • Winter hat - to deter more snow birds
  • Top hat (I guess... but it's debatable) - to deter redbirds
  • And Feather hat to attract birds ignoring the default bird deterrent effect of the Scarecrow

IT will give you more things to do with hats, meat effigies, and farm plots... and HATS!

Giving the Pumpkin lantern a new purpose?

OK, I'll just straight up say this but the pumpkin lantern looks bad-donkey!

So I was thinking maybe this old (useless and costly) light source could have a new purpose (and possibly lengthen it's decomposition rate please)?

So... During Autumn, (Halloween... duh...) we could make these things more of a necessity as it could provide protection?

Here's what I was thinking, during RoG Autumn, things get a little easy, not much danger unlike rainy Spring, scorching Summer, and freezing Winter... everything seems more calm here... so why not make it harder (no respite for you!)

Introducing... more mobs!! Specifically supernatural (not the show) related mobs like the werewolf (werepig), ghosts, vampires (...bats) so, aside from the basic hounding you get, during autumn, more mobs come to get you!

Alright, for the pumpkin lantern... traditionally, jack o' lanterns are viewed to be used as:

  • A way to light the way to the afterlife
  • To deter evil spirits
  • (These are all my speculations btw)

So why not make the Pumpkin Lantern deter most/some mobs?

Ghosts appear almost anywhere even without graves and act much like hounds do! (<--- proposition)

Ghosts become weary of following you when you're near the PL... or maybe... coming near the PL's light radius can capture ghosts much like a basket trap is to frogs? (Pokeeeemoon) And yield nightmare fuel? (too much? But c'mon!) Ghosts should give you nightmare fuel! It's the closest thing to ectoplasm!

I know, the werepig can annihilate this thing but what if it doesn't? Or maybe not... what do you think?

Bats become preoccupied by these things upon entering the light radius... ?

OK, the werepig and bat thing sounds lame but you gotta admit that the ghost thing sounds good right?

So now farming now becomes a big thing where the crops you plant (specifically the pumpkin) can protect you! (<---- so here's another thing to do in the game!!)

O___O

Well, there you go... hope you like it...

EDIT: for the screenshot above, I kinda tinkered with the pumpkin lantern code and removed (turned into a comment) the lines that have to do with them decomposing in a short span of time... basically made them non-perishable... but I did have a copy of the original though... I suck a modding...

O___O

I think the idea of mobs attacking you in autumn unless you have pumpkin lanterns is really really cool. Hopefully these mobs wouldn't spawn in the first season, though, if it happens to be autumn. (If you started in Spring I wouldn't mind having to do it for the first autumn.)

Some (anti-griefing?) threads have mentioned adding a new item to repel player ghosts from an area after a player dies (they also mention teleportation items). Perhaps the Pumpkin Lantern can be improved so that it fills this role and repels player ghosts from a small radius area.
