New biome idea for Don't Starve ( ! PLEASE ADD THIS ! )

Recommended Posts

I've noticed the ocean in Don't Starve isn't being used, you can't even fish from it. So I had a idea for a potential new biome that could be brought to the game. My idea for a new biome is the Shallow Sea Biome or(Inland Sea) meaning a area that is only one or two feet deep.

If you think about it having a Shallow Sea Biome would mean we would have access to a whole new range of food items, crafting item, passive, hostile, and neutral mobs.

We could have more areas to fish besides ponds.

There could be sponges.

Palm trees.

Coconuts.

Clams where you can possible find a pearl inside for crafting.

Find sea shells.

Collect crabs for meat.

Kill turtles for mea and use their shells for crafting.

Possible kill sharks or stingrays for meat and crafting.

Collect coral.

Maybe wrecked parts of ships.

Maybe buried treasure and other things in sand.

Palm fronds bushes for crafting.

Could craft a shelter to keep dry from rain using sticks and palm fronds.

Can craft a fish trap using sticks.

A weaker reskined model of the Rock Lobster that is found in caves.

The list goes on and on and on.

Obviously a Shallow Sea Biome would be small or maybe medium sized. It would be connected to other biomes by a beach and have the ocean as a border. Most of the biome would be foot deep water that slows the player when walking through it and like the other biomes you will not go into the ocean but it would always spawn next to the ocean. Also since you'd be in water your more prone to getting hurt from lightning.

Generally I feel a biome like this would be great for the game since the ocean is not being utilized in any way and can't be used currently. This biome would bring massive amount of new content that would make the game that much more better and fun.

Please be kind and leave your feedback on this idea and show your support so maybe one day this biome could be added to the game.

To add to the idea, the biome should be inaccessible during a full moon as the sea level rises(high tide). And more of the area is accessible during the new moon(low tide). Though I can understand if implementing the tides affecting accessibility of the biome, would seems to just add too much work. Either way, I still like the idea of a beach area.

Anyways, feels like it would be a great mod though.

I think "Lagoon Biome" would be a slightly more to-the-point name.

I like this idea, though I hope you imagine such a biome as having some of those things you listed and not all, considering a biome tends to not have more than roughly five unique components. I think the palm tree (which of course can yield coconuts and leaves), clams, crabs, and maybe a unique fish in deeper parts (effectively pond patches) would be enough.

I reckon that an addition of pearls from clams would require the player to provoke their creation and the pay off being a new health item ingredient. I'm not sure what your idea for the use of pearls would be, but medicine seems an interesting one to me.

Mostly I like the idea because I can imagine a lagoon biome to be an effective overheating safe zone and thus make summer more manageable/fun/with a bit of luck survivable as a starter season. I reckon you wouldn't be able to build on a Lagoon Biome, but at the edge of it should be good enough. The counterpart could be that it would be very dangerous during winter.

EDIT: Okay, forgot about wetness for a second. Surely something can be worked out around that.

Wait, weren't @XirmiX and some guys working on an underwater mod?

Well I feel a biome like the one in my original post would be a good idea. Something like a underwater level might be to much. But I do feel they need to get off their butts and do something with water cause until they start doing stuff with water were very limited to what we can do and play around with.

Well, i'm the main developer for the Underwater Mod. And I can assure you guys it will be simply AWESOME !!! Not only we are going to add an underwater level but... wait for it... the entity of WATER !! You'll be able to drink and thirst will be implemented as well (you can choose if witch it off or on) !!!

So far, the team is working a lot and very hard to complete the mod ! A lot of the stuff you proposed has been either already completed or is in the process of completion ! Believe me, its going to be a very big mod but its going to add an amazing new bit to the DS world !

EDIT: I'm also working on a Wikia for the mod, so once the mod is finished you guys could have a reliable (although spoiling) guide for out mod !!

@x0IGAMERI0x, the underwater world mod will work as caves. Even though you'd think a biome would be interesting, water isn't the type of thing you can just have a biome of. You need a whole world, because water is a liquid and for reasons such as that.

If you'd like water into game, you can look forward to the mod. We have a team of quite skilled programmers, artists and animators, so it's not gonna be just something taken from the original game, edited and plopped in as a new thing.

Yeah, I'd actually really like the idea of a beachy biome, at high tide a few times a month. (Or Low tide at the same time.)

Perhaps it'd be walkable even when partially submerged but home to unseeable enemies at that time. (And otherwise unobtainable items.)

Perhaps as the tide comes in it washes in jellyfish (Add honey and berries to the crockpot to make Stinging Raspberry Jello), driftwood and all those turkey legs that fell into the sea.

Also it'd offer an option for land bridges that end up submerged at high tide.

Good point, but I'm not sure if it's possible to make low tide in certain places while high tide in most others... I guess we could try to implement that.

Oh, well the way I thought of it "High/Low" tide would be a matter of a switch for the beach biome universally.

Like for some maps, the water is out most of the time but it floods during high tide and for others the areas are normally covered with water and only at low tide does the water recede.

Yeah, that could work like the nightmare cicle in the ruins. You better get out before it starts!
