Another Character Voice Idea Thread Because The Others Are Dead

Recommended Posts

I'm really interested in this topic, but would rather not necro any more threads to share my thoughts. So here, fresh thread where everyone who is like me and wanted to discuss but never got to for whatever reason can come and offer up what they think the DS characters might sound like if they actually spoke with a human voice (let's say for an animated movie). In this thread, I'm going to keep editing the OP to keep an active list of suggested voices for the characters. Also, feel free to link any samples of the actor's voice (especially helpful if the actor you chose can achieve a wide range of voices)! Those links will be added to the OP as well.

Because this is purely a discussion based on voice sound for the purposes of something like an animated movie, there's no need to worry about an actor's appearance as opposed to that of the character they would voice. Feel free to suggest super-popular actors (I know other threads wanted to leave them out entirely for various reasons), I only ask that you make sure you actually think they would be good for the role. I'm likely going to avoid them for my own suggestions, personally.

An additional option, if you are so inclined, is to record your own voice-acting samples if you think you have what it takes to voice a particular character (you can choose to base your voice off of existing suggestions or do something completely your own, whatever you see fit).

Now I'm going to kick the thread off with a suggestion of James Corden as Wilson, going off of his role as the Baker in the recent movie adaptation of Into the Woods. The whole idea of it came about when I was imagining this silly little ITW AU for DS, and the more I pictured Wilson as the Baker the more the idea of him actually sounding like that grew on me. I already imagined that Wilson would have a high-pitched and potentially slightly nasally voice, considering that he's voiced in game by a muted trumpet, so that works out quite nicely. The only thing that's iffy for me is the English accent, and that's because I'm not sure at this point whether my headcanon Wilson is from America or England (leaning towards American, but I'm still open to the notion of him being a Brit living in America).

Welp, since no one else is saying anything I'm gonna throw out another idea (and it's much less thought-out than my Wilson one TBH, so it's probably stupid): Mandy Moore as Willow. I suppose you could technically say that I'm coming from her role as Rapunzel in Tangled since that's the only role of hers that I know. ^^; I think her high-pitched and airy voice is pretty flute-like. On the other hand, it's entirely possible that she sounds too sweet for someone hotheaded and independent like Willow. IDK. Help me out here, guys.

Were there any other roles Moore did other then Rapunzel? I think you might be on to something.

I think Grey DeLisle would be another good addition for Willow, i could imagine Willow's voice would be leaning a bit closer to how Mandy sounds like from Grim Adventures.

Another, but for Wickerbottom who would sound fitting if she had this voice (but thats just me)

I can totally see Willow sounding like DeLisle. Thing is though, she's so well-known that I feel like that brings up the issue I saw people having on the older threads: People hearing a well-known voice and not being able to get past the actor and their previous roles to hear the actual character ("hey-it's-that-voice-syndrome"). Like, if Willow were voiced by DeLisle it would honestly be pretty hard for me to unhear Frankie from Foster's Home (or, y'know, if she did her Mandy voice I wouldn't be able to unhear Mandy).

Come on, guys. I can't make all these suggestions myself. I'm really starting to pull stuff out of my ass here just to try and encourage discussion.

Really dumb Maxwell suggestion: Tony Jay (Frollo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame). This really is much less a suggestion of a specific actor and more of a suggestion of a general voice sound (I mean, technically all of my suggestions are intended to be that, but this one even more so), for two main reasons: Firstly, it would be impossible to get Tony Jay himself because he's dead; secondly, this is another example of an actor that would suffer from "hey-it's-that-voice-syndrome" because his natural speaking voice is Frollo. But the general voice sound sort of works for a harmonium in my mind because it's low and, well, harmonious.

Now somebody tell me I'm wrong and give a better voice, or tell me I'm right and make a suggestion anyway. :v

YOU"RE WRONG, I HAVE A BETTER VOICE!

Uh, I mean, I might have a suggestion for Maxwell?

Tim Curry's got a very showman-esque voice laced with a tinge of gleeful malevolence under his genteel accent. Plus, he's done a voice for an organ before (albeit a pipe organ rather than a pump organ) as Forte from Beauty and the Beast: Belle's Enchanted Christmas.

Nigel Thornberry for Maxwell, I like it. :u

*peeks out from behind hide-y hole*

Uh... Benedict Cumberbatch for Maxwell? Ben is good at condescending Brit roles.

Ooh, now we're really getting somewhere. Might just have to keep him away from the pengulls, though. XD

Oooo what an interesting thread! I've always wondered what the characters would sound like as humans. I agree with you that Wilson's voice would be more high-pitched or nasal, but I definitely think he is British for the same reasons as KaStar23. I've been looking around for actors that sound similar to the Wilson in my head, haven't found any that fit the bill exactly (don't think I ever will, to be honest) but off the top of my head Matthew Goode is pretty close. :) Here's a clip

(If he had a posher accent, seeing as Wilson's a gentleman and all.)

Also quick question, isn't Wes mute? xD How is there an actor listed for him?

It's just a gamer joke (and I'm pretty sure the MooseGoose suggestion is a joke too; I was (and still am) conflicted about putting the joke submissions, but whatever). Gordon Freeman is the main character of the Half-Life series (you apparently haven't played them and you should, because they're amazing) and is famous for (among many other things) never having been given an official speaking voice.
