My First Experience of PvP

Recommended Posts

I tried a PvP server out last night, my first time! It was fun!

I thought I better role Wickerbottom as I want weapons and armor quick. I port into game a see a group of people gathering; I panicked and ran. Not my proudest moment.

I get pretty lucky with the gathering, which was surprising considering some of the others were on Day 40+. I get some of the basic tools and loot, then make myself a spear and log suit. That's when I spotted the robot...

Fresh port by the look of him, no gear at all. Time to begin. Bad idea... I basically starved myself to death chasing this guy, but eventually got him. First blood.

I decide I need a boomerang after this. I continue to live as a nomad until I found a Wolfgang; another fresh port by the look of him. This time I'm careful, and he thinks he is too. He recognises that I'm a murder, so he runs when I'm close. What he doesn't realise is that I'm keeping him away from fire making materials. As night falls, he has no choice but to use my fire. It ended with him fleeing into the night, terrified of my boomerang. He died to Charlie.

I find a camp with about 4 guys in it, all shouting "murderer" and equipping spears; they have a pretty good set up. I run off again, shamefully. This isn't over.

I move away and set up a crackpot and some traps, then wait for nightfall. I walked near their camp with a torch and waited for dawn. I gave it a few mins (for everyone to leave to go gathering) then went and stole all their food! I quickly ran back to my little camp and cooked it all up, then abandon that and made a more permanent one further away. I sit and plan.

I gear up a bit more and get myself into a good food routine. I'm waiting for two things, winter and hounds. Eventually, a few days into winter, I hear them; the time has come.

I set up near their camp and heat my thermal stone. Night falls; torch equipped, and the first hounds arrive. I fall on their base with an army of hounds chasing me; I run straight through and let the panicked group lash out at the hounds and take the aggro.

As the fight goes on, I start hammering down buildings. I get everything down just as the fight ends; a quick fire dart and a few spear hits finishes off the survivors.

Shortly after this the host disconnected, and I don't blame him. PvP was very fun.

Good lord I enjoyed this read. Very well written!

I dare say, you've convinced me to pick up DST sooner rather than later just to experience what you've described (probably tonight even). Absolutely beautiful; a demonstration for the masses! How you masterfully planned your chess-like preying, forcing a weak hand with the limited resources you had. Oh, how I'd absolutely enjoy sharing a server with you. How can it be that Don't Starve possibly has a meta? Oh joy of joys, how I'm salivating for some pub-stomping like you've displayed.

Please, further record your future games.

And yes, griefing is not what the OP has done. It is PvP - there are no rules besides 'survive'. If it were a cooperative server, however, then it would be griefing. If this game play isn't for your stomach, stay away from PvP.

Sorry you that feel that way Clwnbaby, I feel that destroying buildings is an indirect way of killing people; by starvation or freezing etc.

Thanks for the replies guys, this really was a lot of fun. I thought I'd be all about coop with this game so I just tried a PvP server to kill a bit of time; it was amazing!

Yeah destroying a base while seems like a PvP strategy if you don't actually kill anyone doesn't seem that effective of a strategy.  Had you killed them and then destroyed base okay thats PvP but you simply engaged them for the sole purpose of destroying the base.  Thats where you all confuse my statement

Well each to their own mate. Obviously we have different ideas about PvP.

Remind me not to let you back onto Kuldin's Server :p Was a good read though and i might have to try PvP out myself.

I really want a game mode to come out that encourages people to form tribes and fight over things. could be doable with a group of people you know i suppose.

I promise I only destroy stuff in a fair fight, or I think they're guna start a fair fight, or if they bother me, or if I'm getting paid. Mostly when I'm getting paid. (Spot the reference)

Once we get a bigger crew together mate (we have a fair few already in the UK DST group on Steam) we can maybe organise some team games. One team goes one way, one the other. Maybe a short ceasefire then the battle begins!

Yay, PvP on this game is funny... Only when pple don't camp the spawn portal : nice to get new players on the serv :encouragement:  Especially on a survival mode. Best way to kill their server.

Stop using the survival mode on PvP server :drunk:

Yeah I don't think there is a good option for organised PvP currently. Wilderness is good for random fights definitely, but sometimes you want a respawn option where the portal can't be camped. I think ghosts should be a part of PvP, but they need tweaking or at least more options like switching the sanity drop on/off.

I would say that greifing is when a "friend" betrays kindness and destroys stuff for the sake of destroying it.  A proper PK destroys stuff that his enemy will use, and steals the rest for himself.

See, if an enemy owns a base, and you kill him, he'll still know how to get back to his base and get you... if you're still there... if the base is still there.

I'm a bit confused too. It seems like they never became aggressive to you until you started killing people. (The game would announce you killing Wolfang and WX-78 right?) At which point they called you murderer and banded together to stop you. But once they decided to fight you, I don't count your camp-bashing as "griefing" anymore. I agree with comments up top that what you did counts as an acceptable move in war.

That being said, if people want to just "survive" together, they really need to stop setting PvP to Yes. I don't know why new players and hosts keep making this mistake. :( Maybe they don't know what PvP means and just set all settings to Yes?

I keep jumping servers looking for a decent PvP since I wanna try a fair fight too. But when I find the group, they're usually huddling around a small fire. Everyone is like, "Hello! Welcome! Do you have berries? We're dying." And I have no choice but to help setup camp instead.......

You have the choice to kill them all! Ha

To be honest I just assumed a server marked as PvP meant that fighting is also assumed. I didn't realise it can be considered as griefing. I'm with you mate, I don't understand why a server would be set to PvP if people didn't wana fight. I would NEVER use actions that inhibit other players on a PvE server.
