Material List for Starting A New Base

Recommended Posts

TLDR - I'm not making any grand statement with this post, just some numbers on how many basic materials it takes to get rolling.

_________________________________________________________________________________

I was bored, so I decided to play a quick solo game and measure what it takes to construct a minimal base and full set of tools.

I am defining a minimal base as alchemy machine, stone firepit, and a chest.  Realistically a functional base requires a lot more, but I feel this adds some perspective on about how much gathering is really required to "get started."

I went pretty fast, constructing my base on day 3. I didn't track food consumption.

Grass          Twigs            Flint        Log          Stone       Gold
Total:                   23              24                15           42              22           7

Axe(x3)                                  3                  3
Pickaxe(x2)                            4                  4
Torch(x2)             4                4

Science M.                                                                4                 4            1
Backpack             4                 4
Spear                   3                 2                  1
Shovel                                     2                  2
Hammer               6                 3                  3
Razor                                      2                  2
Log Suit                6                                                  8
Stone Firepit                                                             2                12
Chest                                                                       12
Alchemy M.                                                              16                6             6

As the numbers show, It actually takes quite a bit of material and investment just to be what a solo player would consider minimally functional.

If a player happens to join a co-op server that has been running for awhile they may not need to gather as much wood, stone, and gold, but they still need an awful lot of grass, twigs, and flint, which is likely to be quite scarce since most players aren't great a resource management.

All of this makes me feel that players who join servers that have been up for awhile need some help with their starting gear / recipes.

Looks like you've started new topics suggesting starter kits at least a couple times...

Personally, I don't immediately try to make half those things on your list when I join a server. The first several days, I spend exploring and eating seeds (or hopefully finding some meat if it's winter). There's firepits every other screen by the time the server gets older. There's at least 5 science machines probably. Don't need a shovel, hammer, or razor. With all the Willow lighters, I don't usually need a torch. Chests get raided, so I don't make them anymore. Actually, I've given up making a base at all since people just try to take over/destroy/raid them (and I'm doing fine on my day 70+ on a 350+ day dedicated server).

But if Klei keeps stats of the average survival times on their servers, I wonder what that number is. 2 days? 5 days? Less than 1 day? I'm not optimistic. There's almost always a death on someone's first night of an older server (if they haven't died to spiders or something else already). If they die and lose their starter gear, this could cause a surplus of those items (like Willow lighters). Especially on Wilderness, where they could just keep dying.

I'll agree with TheLetterW on http://forums.kleientertainment.com/topic/45691-starter-packthink-default-only-more-mellow/page-2?hl=starter though, a couple flint at least for newcomers wouldn't bother me.

I'm not suggesting every player needs all of these items the moment they step through the portal.

However, I'm suggesting that if you intend to build a base, and if you intend to have a full set of tools, this is the resources you need access to.

If you enjoy logging onto servers and merely surviving without ever building advanced tools or building a base, that's fine, your choice.

Thanks for the exact numbers! I've been playing quite a lot so I've always had an  approximate number in my mind. Also, I always add charcoal to the list before starting a base, not sure how much for starters, because I always gather a full stack of 40 pieces for 3 crockpots and the rest goes to drying racks.

my list https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1u4roRAyd1UTPK0RZDM2NoCuzYJIAHT0o4facmUHL8DE/edit?usp=sharing

well, its basically 10 gold, 40 log (2 stacks), 40 rock (1 stack) or 2 full pickaxe durability, 25 for both twig and grass and 10 flint (max 2-3 pick up from ground, the rest is from mine the rocks, for newcomer can find some flints)

ps. i didn't use the rack since store alive rabbit in the chest is much easier

This also limits the type food you're making.  Drying racks and bird cage give you much better food rather quickly.  Meatballs should be thought of as a last resort food since there are much better things to make that are just as efficient

Also I wouldn't become to dependent on the cheesy food tricks ie storing rabbits, leaving food on crockpots because RoG changed these things to make it less exploitable and the developers have hinted they will eventually change it for Together.

I'm no so sure, keep in mind, we're talking averages here, not median, which means they're extremely subject to outliers. Outliers like flair2v who probably doesn't have much trouble surviving 70+ days and me who plays exclusively on friend servers, and wouldn't have trouble surviving there either

keep in mind that the average of {1,1,1,2,35} days is still 8 days, it's hard to recover from an outlier like that.

I bet the average is somewhere around 30 days survived, but the median is probably like 2 or 3 or something.

EDIT: my mental math sucks.

I decided not to include more because by that time I would expect other teammates to be helping, or for the player to have to go out for other specific non-basic material(charcoal, reeds, silk, etc).  It's pretty common to task one person with gathering charcoal for crock pots & drying racks, another gets reeds and silk for the bird cage, another gathers manure for farms, etc.

Perhaps all things considered I should have included Lightning Rod since I would expect the 'rocks and gold' guy to build that, but it's only another 9 rock and 1 gold, and it's not usually important to have right away.

Off topic technicality... but my guess is based on players on public, dedicated servers that are 100+ days old (which is also what this topic is aimed at). From what I've seen, probably 80% die in less than 3 days. An optimistic 50% iin 1 day or less. From what I've seen while playing on these servers, the average is probably less than 5 days - even if you don't throw out the outliers.

I'm talking in bigger numbers than 5 or even 10 players. I'll make up for one server type (public, dedicated, PvP, Wilderness - for example), for 100 people for a nice round number. 50 die in one day, 30 in 3 days, 10 in 10 days, 10 in 50 days = 7.4 average. I think these are very optimistic numbers too.

Anyways, the point was that I kinda agree with a starter kit idea, since people die too fast when the world is barren.

Edit: Oops, I took too long posting and eating. But yeah, 8's not that big a number!

There aren't any outliers in there. you forget the few people that only play on friends servers and have a hundred or so hours in the normal game, and the streamers. Those people I would expect to make it up in to the high hundreds, and that one dude that makes it to day 1000 or something crazy like that.

They'll offset the average by a ways.

Sorry, I'm having a bit of an off day, point being, I'm a little optimistic for the average, but the median is likely devastatingly low.
