Tips for mid-length (30-40+ day) survival, and removing RoG functions in world customization?

Recommended Posts

I've been getting better at this game (mostly due to playing it practically non-stop for several weeks), but still find that many encounters can murder me in an instant. Hounds, Random super swarm of spiders, Trying to fight tentacles, Those damn jumping warrior spiders, Weather, Deerclops, Pengull swarm, odd glitching where i try to set up a campfire or craft a torch when night is turning only to have it do this weird thing where it refuses to make the camp and just scoots forward doing the "no can do" animation as if it was red but it isn't; thus causing me to die by charlie/darkness, etc...

This last game i managed to get through first year due to extremely lucky set of circumstances, i found a set piece with the mini chess biome so i could farm to get 9 gears, a bunch of marble etc.. then there was an entire war going on in the swamp i found, dozens of spiders, tentacles and merm murdering each other giving me like 10 frog leg, 10 fish, 2 Tentacle Spikes, enough spider glands to make 8 health potions, silk up the wazoo, and more. Kept finding all kinds of good stuff, but i did fall for the stupid contagious rot trap, but eventually set up my base in beefalo territory and managed to kill deerclops at end of winter but went completely insane and had a swarm of spiders and shadow beasts chasing me and i froze to death from not being able to safely set a bonfire. When it respawned me at the touch stone i was basically screwed, i literally began freezing in 2 seconds of spawning, and somehow had to find 3 grass, 1 sapling, and 1 flint, and cut down a tree all before i froze....but wait, there's more!! the hounds immediately started coming the second i spawned -__-    After like 40 times of alt+f4'ing out of rage not wanting to die again i somehow managed to build a bonfire and fend off the hounds, then died trying to make it back to my old gear due to not having ANY grass anywhere to make camps and froze.

I had my game set pretty well in my favor too, i had boons/set pieces on more, touch stones on more, butterflies on more, and frog rain off, summer and spring off, autumn start, smoldering/burning off, Rain at less, lightning at less, frog pond to less, birchtree monster thing at less, and the spring and summer giants set off just in case having summer/spring off wouldn't stop them. But i still seem to have trouble when the end of 1st/beginning of 2nd year hits everytime i play.

So i have two things i was asking, first was is there a way to turn off some of the RoG functions like overheating? Because i was getting VERY VERY fast overheating as soon as winter ended even though i had summer off, so it should've been set to winter. And the other was any kind of tips you guys could tell me for surviving once you've got a pretty good overall knowledge of the game but can't seem to get very far in practice.   (sorry for the wall of text, hard to abbreviate this kind of thing)

Oh, and i forgot to mention i've been mostly playing as Wilson, although i did do a few games as Wendy recently. I'm not really a fan of willow, wes, and wickerbottom simply due to appearance even though i haven't unlocked wes yet. I've been considering maybe trying Wolfgang, Wigfrid, or maybe wx78 or webber but their cons do worry me a bit.

any kind of tips you guys could tell me for surviving once you've got a pretty good overall knowledge of the game but can't seem to get very far in practice.   (sorry for the wall of text, hard to abbreviate this kind of thing)

Tips for Encounters

Tentacles:

  1. Don't try to fight tentacles.
  2. Stay away from Tentacles, they won't chase you.
  3. Try to wear armor when walking in the marsh, in case a Tentacle happens to hit you.

Spiders:

  1. Run and stay away from spiders, jumping warrior spiders, and away from the spider nests, especially when they come out at dusk and night.

Pengulls:

  1. Don't attack Pengulls and they won't attack you.
  2. If you accidentally hit one of them, keep running away from the Pengull until the Pengull loses interest in you.

Deerclops:

  1. Run away from Deerclops.
  2. Also, don't run around your main base, or Deerclops will smash your base while trying to smash you.
  3. Try to wear armor when running away, in case Deerclops manages to hit you.

Tips for Darkness

Campfire

  1. Setup a campfire before night falls, don't try to place one in the dark.

Firepit:

  1. Light the firepit before night falls, don't try to light one in the dark.

Torch:

  1. Prepare/Keep a torch in your inventory before night falls, don't try to craft one in the dark.
  2. Equip the torch before night falls, don't try to equip one in the dark.
  3. When a torch in your hand is used up, you will equip another torch from your inventory as long as you have one - Prepare/Craft/Keep a second torch in your inventory before your first torch burns up.

Others

  1. Stay away from things that kill you.
  2. Don't fight with things that kill you.
  3. If you can't do something fast enough, do it earlier.

Good luck.

Advanced Tips for Encounters:

Going near stuff that does high damage

  1. Wear chest armor
  2. Wear helmet
  3. Keep an identical chest armor in reserve - when the one you are wearing gets destroyed, you will auto-equip the one in your inventory
  4. Keep an identical helmet in reserve - when the one you are wearing gets destroyed, you will auto-equip the one in your inventory

Killing stuff that doesn't move + tries to kill you

  1. Wear armor
  2. Make a powerful weapon: Tentacle Spike, Hambat, Dark Sword, etc...
  3. Attack until your armor or health reaches around 20%, then run.
  4. (Optional) Place gunpowder at their feet, light it, and run.
  5. (Optional) Plant a tree, wait for it to grow, then light it, and run.

Killing stuff that moves + tries to kill you

  1. Wear armor.
  2. Make a powerful weapon: Tentacle Spike, Hambat, Dark Sword, etc...
  3. Attack until your armor or health reaches around 20%, then run.
  4. (Optional) Plant many tooth traps, then run around them and hope the stuff walks into the traps.
  5. (Optional) Run around a lure plant, and hope the stuff walks into eye plants

Yeah, no offense but that wasn't much help...that's like trying to tell someone who got in a car accident just don't drive anymore and they'll be fine. I'm looking for strategies to fight the enemies for when i have no choice but to fight or if i'm trying to farm tentacle spikes, or eggs from pengulls etc.. i know i can avoid them most of the time but that would not only be boring but would limit my supplies since egg thievery in winter and getting a tentacle spike early are some of my best advantages since i usually end up with bad luck finding the last couple things i need for winter on time, thus having to rely on other food sources and whatnot. Silk is especially iffy since it's something you can't just not get, it's required for so many items that i have to fight spiders and level 2 nests are pretty common past day 10ish in my experience so spider warriors are a threat i can't avoid all the time.

And of course with hounds the just don't fight them doesn't apply at all since they come to you and chase you to hell and back, so i still have to deal with at least them.

The issue with making a campfire has nothing to do with me just waiting to long, 90% of the time i'll be getting ready to setup the campfire with 2-3 minutes+ left till darkness, but i'll get a hoard of enemies that aggro on me that won't stop chasing and i won't have time to set the fire without getting hit, and by the time i shake them off there's 30-40 seconds till dark and even though the "set firepit" symbol is green it refuses to place it on the ground and just does a jerky/low framerate type animation scooting forward without placing the fire almost acting like it's red but it's still green so i should be able to place it. I literally sit there spamming the key to place the fire and i end up getting hit by charlie before i can do it. Luckily it doesn't happen super often, only 2 of 3 times in a whole "world/game", but this glitch has still killed me a few times.

oh, sorry, didn't see your 2nd post before i hit reply. The 2nd post has some interesting ideas. I've considered trying gunpowder out, but never had a lot of time to mess around with it since i was always strapped for time. Rotten eggs are made when an egg spoils right? Instead of turning into rot? I've never tried since i typically just eat eggs right away.

And now that i think about it, after winter ended i completely forgot about armor since i had been prioritizing warm clothes like beefalo helm and puffy vest etc.. over log suit and football helmet type things. i did remember to grab my football helmet for deerclops though, probably the only reason i survived to kill it lol.

my tips to survive 200+ days:

1) always wear one piece of armor (helmet or body), its saves you from surprise attacks (hounds/giants). Other says its not effective, but we talk about life. Even a log armor is pretty good.

2) avoid direct fight as much as possible. Use animals to fight each other. Hounds chasing you? run near spider nest/tentacles. Use pigs as bodyguards if possible.

3) if you have RoG its good idea to have reserve base for summer which can be burned without regrets.

4)learn to manage you sanity as early as possible. I really like Willow here. Free "torch", easy mode in winter if trees around, restoring sanity near fire.

Tips for Armor:

  1. Chest armor + Head armor > only chest armor
  2. Chest armor + Head armor > only head armor
  3. Chest + Head armor stacks: Log suit blocks 80% damage, you take 20%. Football helmet blocks 80% damage, you take 20%. If you wear Log Suit + Football Helmet, you take 20% * 20% = 4% damage.
  4. With 150 health, if you take 4% damage, enemies need to hit you for 3750 damage before you die. You will use up 9 log suits / football helmet (7 of one, 2 of the other) before you die.
  5. Log suit is the cheap and renewable but still effective chest armor
  6. Football helmet is the cheap and renewable but still effective head armor
  7. Always wear armor

Tips for Freezing

  1. Thermal Stone
  2. 2 Thermal Stone: Put 1 beside the fire, and one on you. When the one on you turns dark, switch it with the one beside the fire.
  3. Really hot Thermal Stone keeps you from freezing for 5 minutes.
  4. Place campfires on the way, burn trees
  5. Keep your chest and head slots for armor

Specific Tips for Spiders

Okay, spiders are important because silk is important. You get silk from spiders and nests.

How to kill spiders 1:

  1. Wear chest and head armor. This is not required but really convenient.
  2. Get a good weapon.
  3. Approach spider nest only DURING THE DAY. Spiders hide in their nest in the day. When you step on the web on the floor, only between 2 to 3 will pop out to greet you.
  4. Lure them out of the web, then kill them.
  5. If you attack them on the web, all other spiders in the nest will come out and try to end your life.

How to kill spiders 2:

  1. Wear chest and head armor. This is REQUIRED.
  2. Get extra chest and head armor, and leave them in your inventory.
  3. Get a good weapon. Hambat and Tentacle Spikes kill spiders in 2 hits (warriors in 4). Spear takes 3 hits (6 hits)
  4. Run into the web, wait for the spiders and attack them.
  5. Keep attacking until they die.
  6. Unless you have no more armor, and the armor you are wearing is 50% or less, then run away.

Specific Tips for Hounds

See "How to kill spiders 2". Hounds take 3 hits from Hambat and Tentacle Spikes. You can clear up to 6 hounds this way, unless you want to play this like an action game and dodge hound attacks. More than 6 hounds, see "Killing stuff that moves + tries to kill you"

Tips for Driving:

  1. IF YOU KEEP GETTING INTO CAR ACCIDENTS, PLEASE DON'T DRIVE.

Good luck.

And I don't know where you live, but I hope it isn't near me.

Mostly right, what i've read. This game is designed for wanting to kill you. So dont cry about that and blame maxwell  ;)

One answer was'nt answered yet as fas as I can see (how to nerf some RoG features): Try to change it in the world setup options. There are configs to shorten summer and/or winter. This was my first change after acknowledging summer is harder than winter. (imho without ice ;))

Most important points by far. It's easy to lose most of your health before you can react and equip armor , so unless you're just collecting rabbit traps , you should have something equipped.

Even Wigfrid relies on monster infighting , hitting the winning side to be efficient. Giants tend to kill everything fast , but can lose a lot of health from a good setup. When done right , you get lots of resources without spending any on weapons and armor.

Tentacles are effective cleaners , just don't join the melee. If they don't engage hostiles for whatever reason , move on and look for reliable baits like spiders , frogs , merms or bees.

An addition about spiders: if you want to obtain spider loot easily, lure a spider out of its web an then attack it. Don't attack a spider while it's on the web or near it, and you will not encounter a single spider warrior. Also if there are multiple spider nests nearby, don't attack any spiders at dusk or night as all wandering spiders will join to attack you and this can be very dangerous.

Run away from Deerclops.

If Deerclops spawns when you are near your base, Deerclops will by default target structures, so if you want to save your base you will have to kill or distract it. You can qiuckly distract it with a boomerang or another ranged weapon before it have destroyed anything. Then you can kite it to kill it, or you can lead it to another place where it can be distracted or killed by something else (e.g. tentacles). It is also advised to run away from your base as far as you can before Deerclops spawns. This way there will be no immediate danger to the base.

About light:

1. When the night is approaching, always open Light section in the menu and see if you have resources to make a campfire or a torch.

2. If you can't craft a torch make sure to place a campfire or find another light source before night or you are dead.

3. Never store twigs, grass, and wood in backpacks if you rely on torches. Otherwise, if you are in a middle of a fight when the night comes, you are dead.

4. If you need to run from something and night is coming, use any spare moment to craft emergency torches (2-3 should be enough). Otherwise, if you are chased and your torch goes out, you are most likely dead because you cannot craft while being attacked.

Prepare/Keep a torch in your inventory before night falls, don't try to craft one in the dark.

This is a strange advise. If you are in the dark and have no torch, you definitely must try to craft a torch. Usually if you stay calm you have enough time to craft and equip your torch before Charlie finds you:

1. Stay calm. If you do everything right you are not going to take any damage.

2. If you were trying to build a campfire but failed, press Escape twice to cancel that build (you can place crafted campfire later without using additional resources).

3. Don't move. You cannot craft while moving.

4. Slowly open menu and craft a torch. While it's being crafted, pay attention to your inventory. Animation will show where it has been placed. If it's not equipped automatically, right-click to equip it.

5. If your inventory is full and new torch is in the mouse, just left-click on the weapon slot. The torch will be equipped and previous weapon will be in the mouse.

If you have some practice you will find this quite trivial. Unless you are under attack.

I literally sit there spamming the key to place the fire and i end up getting hit by charlie before i can do it.

Spamming the key doesn't make sense. If the game thinks you cannot place the fire here, you will not able to do it no matter how hard you try. Just pick another place quickly or make a torch.

@Riatche

Ya but what you say is hard to do.

That guy is dying because he cannot craft a torch in time. Or place a fire. It is too hard!

Get everything ready in inventory. Always wear armor, put a few spare armor in your inventory. Prebuild all your campfire. Everything now easy :)

Wear armor = You can run up to Deerclops 1v1 and own! No need to kite, kite is hard and is for pigs. (You need 3 spare 100% armors to do this)

Nevermind about base, you can always rebuild if you stay alive.

I find this super helpful, but it is a bit risky as well.  Keeping treeguards roaming around near my base.

Not close enough to the point that they will pay a visit, but close enough that they are a good walking distance in case you need protection.  They have been able to save me a couple of times from hound attacks (not advisable with fire hounds in the summer) and a Deerclops encounter when I was low on health and resources.  If it wanders off to far or in a place you do not what it, you can always attack it once or start chopping a tree nearby to aggro it, lure it to your desired area and then plant pine cones to pacify it.  After that it will just roam and you can stay close to it for protection when danger arrives, not too close though due to its sanity aura.

But I will warn you, treeguards will not fight spiders and vice versa for unknown reasons.

Hmm..

I usually hit Pause when there are surprise attacks. It helps me to plan the best options given the situation. (e.g check inventory, where to lure)

As for spiders, I don't believe in fighting them directly if you just want to farm their drops. Just get a bunch of traps depending on the tier of the nest and kite away with it.

How to get eggs: Build a bird cage. Catch a bird. Feed it with Cooked Monster Meat. Don't waste your time on Pengulls.

That's about what I got.

Just wondering... if you're turning off most of the RoG functions in world-gen, why don't you disable the DLC instead?
