Dealing with Clockworks Alone

Recommended Posts

Hello, and thank you for taking the time to read this post.

I have played Don't Starve for almost 300 hours, but I still do not know a few things to this game.  One of these things is killing/kiting the Clockwork Chess Pieces.  These things have been the main reason I cannot finish Adventure Mode.  I have looked up the wiki and watched a few videos, but they all suggest/show Pigmen, Treeguards, or any other mobs taking care of them for the player.  Now that's fine and dandy, but I often find myself going against them alone, especially in Adventure Mode, because there are no pig villages, beefalo herds, or any other mobs nearby I can manipulate into fighting them off.

I have no problems with the Clockwork Knights.  It is the Clockwork Bishops and Rooks that are the concern, especially Rooks.  I am not sure if preparation is the issue.  I always have two logsuits, two spears and a decent stack of healing salve.  I just want to know if it possible to kite the whole group on your own.  Should I bring other weapons or specific items besides the said logsuits, spears and salve?  Any tips would help tremendously.

Thanks in advance.

Have your two log suits and also put on a football helmet and you should be fine. Take one or two out, step back and heal/change gear, repeat.

Alright then, I was sort of on the right track.  Thanks for the tip :)

bishops are pesky, use the rook to crush them then take him down(alone, he is easy, dodge when he is running and you can beat him)

They most certainly are.  They still kill me more than the rook.  Thanks  :)

The knight is kitable if you know how to kite. The rook is hard to kite because he's huge. The Bishop can't be kited because he uses projectile attacks.

I have manage to kite a few knights successful during my last few playthrus, notably in the Reign of Giants carpeted marble set pieces (I do not know if that is the proper title for those).  But I will keep these things in mind next time I play.  Thank you :)

I didn't experience much problems killing these mobs if I had enough basic resources. I can advise the following:

1. Try to have as much armor as possible. Log suit is required. Football helmet will make it easy. Remember to equip the suit after the helmet, not before.

2. Get the best possible weapon, e.g. find a tentacle spike (you just need to wander in swamp biome for a while) or craft a ham bat (get 4 monster meats, give them to one pig, kill it after it became werepig and you have all the ingredients for the ham bat).

3. Kill monsters in the following order: knights -> bishops -> rooks.

4. Fight one monster at a time.

5. The first goes the knight because it tends to leave its biome when chasing you more than other monsters. Walk to it and initiate a usual kiting fight. When you see that any other monster is aware of your presence, run away keeping short distance of the knight. Hopefully the others will forget about you, so you can continue to fight the knight. If they are not forgot about you or the knight lose interest in you, just run far away, heal and start over.

6. When you have killed all the knights, go to a bishop. Previous rule applies here as well: if more than one monster are attacking you, run far away, heal and start over. To kill a bishop with minimal damage taken, wait for it to close its eye and go to sleep, then run straight to it and attack it continuously. This way it will have time to make only 1-2 attacks that will deal 8-16 damage on you assuming you have log suit equipped.

7. If you have enough health it may be reasonable to take 2 bishops at one time if they're both attacking you (I mean ignore the second one's attacks until the first one is dead) because you will usually take 2 more hits while running away from them. But if you're not sure you have enough health, you need to attack one of them so that the second one is far away. Usually you just need to approach the first bishop from the direction that makes distance between you and the other bishop maximal. If they are too close to each other, approach them carefully and run away when one of them starts wondering about you. Hopefully it will chase you for a while and end up in a different location.

8. When there is only a rook left, it becomes easy. When it starts charging at you, move to the side and approach it as it misses you. When it's stopped, land a few hits and run. Repeat until it's dead. If you failed to evade its attacks and became low on health, run away from it. It has difficulty to change direction of movement, so running shouldn't be a problem.

9. Keep an eye on your sanity. There are often many dark flowers in the area, so if you stick around for too long, shadow creatures will help to finish you off. Also don't continue the fight if night is coming because night will make running away difficult.

10. Blow darts can be useful as it normally takes 3 blow darts to kill a bishop.

Well, finch stuck in mud, I applaud you sir, or miss (I apologize in advance), for providing such a detailed response.  Thank you so much.  I apologize if I wasted your time, but I really appreciate that you dumbed it down.  You really did not have to, but thank you.

I was close in terms of the tactics you spelled out when I play, but with these adjustments, I may be able to finish Adventure Mode after all! (since they were the cause of me never advancing)  Yeah! XD

The points you made on the bishops are the ones that will help me the most.  Thanks again.   :-)
