Vests (vanilla)

Recommended Posts

Do you find them useful? I'm fairly new (90 hours with only having played Wilson atm), and I would always opt for the backpack because hats seem to do the job on their own already (Garland/Top Hat - Sanity, Winter Hat/Tam +Thermal Stone - Winter). Never prototyped. ):

Thoughts?

New?  I've been playing for like two years and only have 111 hours clocked in...I'd say you probably have the hang of it by now.

Anyways, I never really used vests, since the Tam o' Shanter pretty much clears up any sanity/warmth problems you might have.

I think part of the problem is that the only options for carrying more stuff on you take up the same slot as the vests. Sure, Chester lets you carry more stuff, but it's not the same as having it in your inventory. You can find substitutes for keeping yourself warm and sane, but you can't find substitutes for storage.

Of course, you don't need the backpack. I know I sometimes like relying on the winter vest to keep me warm. But that requires more strict inventory management, which may not be worth it.

I still think it would have been cool if they added an item that lets you store more things and takes up the hat slot.

I only use vests when I have to head out for a whole day or so, and when dear clops comes by (so I can wear the football gear).

I never use the beefalo hat btw, eventhough I often find it in one of the numerous setpieces that offer it. I just don't like it.

Generally, I don't use vests. Thermal stones alone, at max-heat (orange), keep you warm for 5 minutes = 10 segments (1 day has 16 segments) ~= dawn to dusk. I spend most of my game near a base (I build a base near every resource I need), so I just use a thermal stone and light a fire.

I do use vests when:

  • Caves (vests = cheap sanity), when in base and not fighting
  • Run from Deerclops and stuff
  • Sanity is low
  • Travelling long distances that takes more than a day

But I don't use backpacks either, never found a need for lots of inventory. Prefer log suits for the safety.

I never really take off my Backpack unless I need to equip my Log Suit to fight off some hounds. Vests are pretty redundant to wear in most situations because Beard/Thermal Stone + Beefalo Hat already does the job really well.

I've used it if I'm spending a lot of time collecting resources (I bring along shadow chester to store them).    Also useful if caving in winter - I like to use the miner helmet for light.  And indeed they are sometimes useful for regaining sanity quicker, if you don't happen to have better means at the time.

If you manage your inventory correctly you don't need any of the slots from a backpack unless the single task at hand is moving loads of items from one place to another, so a passive warmth bonus is definitely a plus.

what is collecting resources

You know guys, there's really not much reason to get snippy simply because someone has a different playstyle than yourself.  In my opinion one of the charms of Don't Starve is that there is really not a "right" way to do things.  As long as you can avoid being eaten, beaten to death, or above all, not starving, then you are doing it right.

Right! There is plenty of food sources in this game, almost all of which allow to build up.

There's only two snippy people here though, no reason to worry.

P.S: I always fail to avoid [...] not starving :p

what is slower speed than player and having to walk towards chest to gain extra 9 slots and having to protect said chest

His health regen is pretty ridiculous so as long as you don't leave him in front of a horde of enemies he can hold his own, and adding 8 more inventory slots to the player at the cost of about 10% movement speed when you're on roads with a walking cane is well worth the price.

Is there any point to summer vests ? I'm wondering , as chilled amulets are fairly easy to craft  and use the same slot anyway. If you use a vest instead of it , you still have to build endothermic fire or use a fan every so often. The chilled amulet frees more inventory slots , and restores sanity just the same.

The niche of the puffy vest is fast travel , as you do need a fire when freezing , which kills your mobility. But a warm hat and stone are enough to not freeze during the (very short) winter days , so you'd have to be in a hurry to cross the map to make use of the puffy vest. And somehow not need to carry anything both ways.

Sometimes I use them. Wilson with a full beard + Beefalo hat + Puffy Vest and a Heatstone is pretty godlike in winter. I just use Chester as a backpack, especially with the Shadow Chester upgrade in RoG.

Heatstone is actually detrimental to your survival when you equip all that other warmth gear.
