I'm sorry if this idea or something similar has been suggested, but I haven't seen it.

I was thinking that every time you go to sleep, there is a chance you have a nightmare. You as the player wouldn't see anything, but you would wake up with a jolt and say something along the lines of "That was terrifying!" or "Phew. It was just a dream." (Bad examples. I know.) You wouldn't recover any or very little sanity and a piece of Nightmare Fuel would be lying somewhere near where you slept. The longer you survive, the higher the chance of having a nightmare is. You know, because the loneliness and harsh environment are slowly chipping away at your mind until there is nothing left but a babbling madman.

It makes sense in the don't starve theme

yet the purpose of sleeping besides health is to regain sanity, and for me unless both are low and both can be upped, i do not see a point in sleeping.

So either a nightmare is a very rare chance, or make it so that you just get less (-30%?)sanity, other than near-nothing or none

It would be quite a pain if you were to sleep with desperately low sanity only to have a nightmare. However, you still get nightmare fuel, an item that's a pain to acquire, out of the process, so the penalty should still be steep (perhaps 50%).

Another thought I had. Maybe the percent of sanity gained could go down the longer you survive, as the nightmares increase is severity.

an item that's a pain to acquire,

1) Go to ruins with campfire resources + thulecite suit + any protective helm

2) Wait for nightmare cycle

3) Run around in circles

4) Wait for cycle to end

5) Swimming in nightmares

I love this idea, I rarely sleep but it would be a nice touch. Maybe it could have a small Nightmare scene?

Or you can play a unwinable battle/starving/freezeing scence?

A unique nightmare sequence for each charater would be pretty cool. Each one would be based off their personal fears and/or backstory.

Like I said, a pain.

Ohh yes, it would give the unloved characters some spotlight. But man that would be a pain if you wanted to mod it.

Maybe it could add a jump scare to the game, it would add some fear factor to the game.

I don't think a jump scare would fit. Don't Starve likes to use ideas and concepts to scare rather than surprise. Perhaps the more nightmares you have or the more time passes in the game the more warped and twist the dreams become.

Step 1) Too hard for me

Step 2) If I even survive that long

Step 3) A bit hard with loads of things chasing you

Step 4) I won't even survive until the cycle starts, let alone until when it ends

Step 5) Oooh nightmare fuel! Yess, finally! *torch runs out* Sheeeeeeeeeeeet

Getting a thulecite suit is TOO HARD?

TOO HARD?!?!?!?

How long have you been playing the game? Five minutes?

Since November 2012, but I play it moderately

and yes its too hard. I hate turtling up and never do it, my base is never bigger than a campfire, several chests, crock pot, research stations, and drying racks. I live the nomad life. I HATE grinding with farms, berry bushes and what not.

So yes, for someone keeping it real and living the nomad life, yep, its too hard for me atm.

My highest record so far is 57 days.

Sure if i turtled up, i could get MUCH more days, and better stuff to go get the thulecite.

It's my playstyle, deal with it  :livid:

Very cool idea! I like it story-wise, but gameplay-wise, it'd be a bummer if you went to sleep to save yourself from the shadow monsters only to have a nightmare.
But....then....
this game is an unforgiving wilderness survival game. I think it'd fit, regardless.
Would this be so hard to make a mod of, I wonder? Nightmare tent?

I have no idea. I don't know how to mod. :p

But if some one was willing to make this a mod that would be awesome.

This is now on my TODO list. Whether i'll ever actually mod it i cant say but its on the list. =-)

A penalty i thought of is if you have a nightmare your character will refuse to sleep for a night or two due to being too afraid of the dreams.

That's awesome! If you ever do get it done, would you tell me please?

I think that penalty might be a bit too much. We already have a step drop in sanity gain.

It could be considered a bit much, or it could be taken as forcing the player to DO THINGS to maintain their sanity. Being in a nightmarish world is one thing. Being there for an extended time will have ever increasing costs on your psyche. Periodically being 'too disturbed' to sleep means you'll need to do a good job collecting green mushrooms and flowers to make up for it.
