The Gentleman Scientist

Recommended Posts

Okay so it's being apparently noticeable that the meat effigy sucks for multiplayer (why waste perfectly good meat and wood on something that costs only like 5 grass). Now I know what you're thinking: just don't make the meat effigy then. But with multiplayer, you can expect to see about 3 primitive dapper gentlemen scientists scurrying around your world at all times. And then, when winter ends and all of them are still alive (since they're such an invasive species), they'll be ready to shed their thick woolly beards. And in a couple weeks, you could have chestfuls of beard hair.

The only uses for beard hair are the meat effigy and fuel for the firepit, and it seems horribly wasteful to just throw a character-specific item into the fire to fend off the darkness; I know his beard is free, but come on, most Wickerbottoms probably wouldn't throw their 2 free pieces of papyrus into a fire just because it was free. So, here's a modest proposal. We bring in a new craftable item: the beard hair whip. If we can make horsetail whips in real life, why can't we make whips out of beard hair too? Not necessarily a suggestions, I'm looking for your opinions, so there's no need for anyone to ask me to move this to the suggestions thread.

Meat effigies don't suck in their current bugged form, in which they don't deduct from your max health. I suggested to Seth that he make this the official behavior, though, because life-giving amulets are easier to craft and are better; if they return the health penalty to meat effigies, then your statement about them sucking would be accurate. They would essentially not exist.

But I think instead of finding new things to do with beard hair, we could improve meat effigies. For example, you could make it as good as a life-giving amulet if, upon dying, there's a temporary ghost-only wormhole to the meat effigy. But to be honest, I think it should be better than an amulet. The topic of resurrection in general would probably benefit from a more systematic analysis and rebalance, but I need to think about it some more-- hopefully I'll be able to come up with a good suggestion, but I don't feel like I have one right now.

@Blazingice26 I don't think it is. The idea of the telltale heart is that you can easily craft it very early in the game, and that you pay for it not in materials, but in a steep health penalty, which can only be later reduced at a very steep cost (booster shots don't come cheap).

So it's kind of like getting a loan for someone to be able to revive themselves, that they'll have to pay eventually.

more uses of beard hair would make wilson much stronger than every other character because beard hair collecting is (for me) a very tedious process where you waste a lot of reccources (catching 20 bunnies to get 4 beard hair etc.) I dont think that beard hair is that usefull anyhow - I usually wash mine down the drain... Horsehair is (generally) much longer

the reason to waste meat, wood and beard hair on a meat effigy rather than 5 grass is to save 40 health and drop max health then to make a booster pack to increase it.

Using Armour reduces the amount of damage TellTale Heart does.

So having a Log-Suit and Football Helmet you only take like 7 damage.

but it uses up the armor durability that could be used fighting enemies.

Also, the health degradation is big because at 0 health your character resets.

You lose your character file on the world. You lose your research mostly which leads to most likely wasting resources on recreating items you researched but lost from your max health going to 0 (or in the negatives)

Booster shots are expensive for restoring 20 max health.

Amulets require nightmare fuel, gold and red gems but are good for portability

Meat effigies are literally easy to make if you farm meat. They have no health reduction and can be something that can be pretty useful in general for ghosts.

Of course it would make Wilson stronger than everyone else; everyone knows that Wilson's the best character ever. It would only make sense if he could run around beating things up with a weapon that he grew himself. Also, have you seen the length of Wilson's beard? xD

@Pyromailmann Your character no longer resets when you would reach 0 max health; instead, the max health loss is capped at leaving you with 30 health.

oh.

So if Meat Effigies had their penalty it would exploit you being able to have multiple from the fact that you can have at least 30 health.

But still as I've said, I'd rather waste papyrus on birdcages, stingers on sleep darts and use healing salves to heal myself in need. Plus it takes the Alchemy engine to make so it's useful but using unused meat, some boards and beard hair is really easy knowing that every server will most likely have one Wilson on.

Beard Hair Whip? Great idea! But on a more serious note, I would like to share my Tier 3 beard with other people. Maybe holding "b" and mousing over somebody would give you the option to share your beard. The recipient would get the prompt Accept Beard Share? If the person clicks yes, Wilson wraps his beard around the person. Then the two close their eyes and start swaying gently side to side whilst "Lean on Me" starts playing. Both characters gain added insulation. Yeah, a more serious note...

Edit: Chestfuls of Beard Hair? :D

Wilson should have an additional power of some sorts...

I mainly play him cuz his beard look cool, not cuz of M - E

A full stage 4 beard provides 135 seconds worth of warmth during winter.

This gives him room for armour.

In addition, everyone seems to forget Stats.

Wilson has 150 Hunger, 150 Health and 200 Sanity.

You need to consider all of these before trying to revamp a character.

Thank you!
