It might sound silly but there were times playing my mouse would freeze or keyboard stopped working, and I found out it was just loose cord and/or broken and had to get it replaced. But I didn't realize it right away of course. I can only suggest to double check there's not a hardware issue going on or something silly like that. Although I guess if single player works fine for him, it's probably not that, I suppose?
