Your First Month

This is my basic guide for people newer to the game, who are unable to survive more than 2 seasons. Also, this is a perfect world scenario, it may actually take 2-3 days to complete an objective (In which case you can replace "day" with "goal"), but once you are competent enough this should be your routine when starting a new world.

FIRST DAY:

When you first spawn collect as many resources as possible. Pickaxes are worth much more than an axe as your first tool, but save rocks for later. Simply craft 2 torches to survive the night, and continue to collect as many resources as possible.

~ about 15 twigs

~ about 15 grass

~ 6 or more petals

~ (depends on spawn) 4 or more papyrus reeds (thanks truthseeker!)

~ 7 berries

~ 3 carrots

~ (optional) Drops from skeletons randomly generated

~ (optional) Fish & frog legs dropped tentacles killing stuff in swamp biomes

~ (optional) Eyebone

SECOND DAY:

The first night and second day should be concerned with finding a rock biome. Mine any gold rocks along the way, but finding a rock biome is still priority. Once found mine only the gold rocks as this will save you the trouble of coming back later. Around dusk chop down 2 enough trees for a campfire to last the night. Find a good group of gold rocks and plant your campfire near them, continue to mine the gold rocks. If all gold rocks are mined in the surrounding area during night, then craft torches to pick up more grass, twigs, etc.

~ about 12-20 gold

~ about 30-40 rocks

~ about 30 flint

~ (optional) more twigs

~ (optional) more grass

~ (optional) more berries, or carrots

THIRD DAY:

The third day is the catch-up day if anything went wrong with the previous two days, such as not being able to find the right biomes or being low on a resource. If you have obtained 20+ extra berries or carrots, continue to farm gold rocks and amass more gold. Around this time your inventory will be pretty full, so after this day camps will be a priority. Also around this time it should start raining if in spring, so all those petals you collected earlier will come in handy to make a parasol. A straw hat shouldnt be neglected either, as this is a great way to fight off wetness at the start.

~ about 15 gold, depending on previous day's harvest

~ ^ rocks and flint to match gold

~ about 10 twigs

~ about 10 grass

~ about 7 berries & carrots

~ (optional) straw hat

~ (optional) pretty parasol

FOURTH DAY:

Now is the time to find your camp site, i recommend having at least 2 of the below features (ranked in importance P.S. This is my personal choice :razz:)

* Next to 3-5 berry bushes

* Close to a road, not necessarily directly next to

* Near Spider den(s)

* in-between 2 different biomes

* Close to at least 1 edge of map, corners at best

* Near beefalo

* Near glommer statue

* Near pig King

Once you have chosen a suitable spot, create a science machine and fire pit. Drop superflous items such as extra stacks of items, armor or tool drops from skeletons, and other things that are not craftables on the ground to save inventory space on the ground next to fire. Continue to mine rocks or collect materials, but prepare for some choppin'

~ 1 science machine

~ 1 fire pit

~ Prototype shovel

FIFTH DAY:

The day of trees! find a forest a distance away from your base if you care about your base looking nice, and chop down as many tier 3 trees as possible (the biggest ones you dope) (dont forget to use a shovel on the stumps. doing this translates one tier 3 tree into 1 board). You should be able to get 2 stacks (40 logs) which will transfer nicely into making the alchemy engine, and then some boards for chests among other useful things.

~ about 40 logs

~ about 30 pinecones? I dont actually pay attention to these :razz:

~ about 5 berries, food gathering should be forgotten

~ another parasol if needed

~ craft 3/4 of your logs into boards, save the rest for log suits and small fires

SIXTH DAY:

Craft the Alchemy Engine, but do not place it. The way i do this (there's probably an easier way) is to press <ESC> once its crafted, the unpause and use a hammer to destroy your science machine. Now, instead of "craft" it should say "place" when hovering over the alchemy engine in your crafting menu, so go ahead and place in where your science machine once was. After this is done use save 2 boards for the night, but use the rest to craft a lighting rod as priority, then some chests, then other scientifical buildings.

~ Alchemy Engine

~ lighting rod

~ 1-3 chests

~ thermometer, rainometer, etc.

~ 2-4 extra boards

Chest Organisation

* Wood chest - put this right next to your pit so you dont mix it up with other ones

   - 1st row:  Boards

   - 2nd row: logs

   - 3rd row:  pinecones

* Scavenge chest - put close to rock chest (easy tool creation access)

   - 1st row:  grass

   - 2nd row: twigs

   - 3rd row:  papyrus

* Rock Chest

   - 1st row:  gold

   - 2nd row: rocks

   - 3rd row:  flint

* Mob Drop chest

   - random amalgamation of silk, pig skins, beefalo fur/horns, tentacle spots, and other MOB DROPS (you dummy)

* Tool chest

  - just fill it with extra tools not needed on hand, such as bug net, hammer, etc.

* Armor chest

   - fill it with unneeded hats/ armor

* The Extra

   - everything else

This is my personal preference for how to organize items, and should last you quite a while.

WARNING! AROUND THIS PART OF THE GUIDE THE "DAYS" TAKE MORE LIKE 2-4 DAYS TO COMPLETE THE GOAL. MORE ADVANCED SUBJECTS WILL BE DISCUSSED FROM HERE ON.

(P.S. Make sure to constantly be farming berry bushes for food, and flowers for sanity. If your collection of berries goes over 20, but is spoiled just trash them on the ground as they are better as rot for later, and now when you collect berries they will be at maximum freshness, which is arguably better then a high amount of them - remember, quality over quantity)

SEVENTH DAY:

Now is the time to start preparing for the hard seasons, which means the stability of food production. (people hate on this means of production, but i find it works). Gather the resources to make a bird cage, which means killing a couple spiders if you havent already, getting 8 reeds for 2 papyrus, grab some of your gold, and 2 seeds. The spider farming is for silk to make a bird trap. Capture a bird and then place it in the cage. Once this is done burn down a small forest away from home to make charcoal, which will be used for a crock pot and drying racks. Gather around 20 charcoal, this should be enough to start out with 1 crock pot, and 3-4 drying racks. If it is not spring, craft a bug net to capture yellow bees (killer ones wont work) make sure you capture enough for 2-3 bee boxes. then destroy enough bee hives to get the honeycomb to match your bee count. also kill any killer bees or extra bees for stingers to craft a beehive. Once you have 2 bee boxes, make sure to plant extra flowers around for more efficiency (also make sure to put the bee boxes slightly far away from your base, dont want any killer bees around in the springtime). Harvest when the max amount of honey is available.

       Remember those drying racks you made earlier? Kill spiders for monster meat then hang the meat on the racks. once finished, give your bird 1 monster jerky to transform it into an egg. then in the crockpot, input 1 monster jerky, 1 egg, 1 honey, and either 1 more honey (for honey nuggets, +27 hp over kabobs) or 1 twig for kabobs. Both recipes offer an easier use food item with no downside (as compared to stand-alone monster jerky), but their food values are slightly under that of their ingredients. Spiders are very easy to farm however, and being able to gain a large amount of food in one serving is generally better than having to spam right-click. other useful recipes include: Butter muffin: 1 butterfly wings, 1 mushroom (any color), and 2 twigs. Fishsticks: 1 fish, 2 berries, 1 twig. And the famous, considered to have the #1 spot, Honeyed Ham: 1 honey, 1 monster meat, 1 normal meat (large, a.k.a no morsels), and 1 berry.

EIGHTH DAY:

Now is the time to prepare for the hard season, if it hasn't already come upon you. Gears are a must have, so go looking for marble biomes, and kill any knights you see. I recommend staying away from bishops/rooks you see, as they are much harder opponents. First order of business is crafting a fridge, and once doing so filling it with food to last. If summer is upon you mine ice and store it in the fridge, and use it when you are getting too hot. If winter simply fill the fridge with an assortment of jerkys, and it should last the first part of it. Next step is to craft an endothermic fire for summer, which can be obtained by mining niter from non-gold rocks. If you have extra materials craft the ice-fling-o-matic, which will automatically put out fires. Otherwise, you'll have to put out smoldering bits out by yourself, just be sure to have the right amount of healing items to void the effect of putting out fires. For winter crafting a beefalo hat should be top priority, as it gives the most insulation, the secondary/extra option is to also hunt a koalefant, for a breezy/winter vest depending on if the season has already started. to Kill a koalefant simply aggro it using a boomerang, and then finish it off with a spear. Finally, a good tool for both winter and summer is the thermal stone, which can be put in the fridge and then carried to cool yourself down in the summer, or put next to a fire to heat yourself up for the winter. No matter the case, 2 thermal stones should always be crafted, 1 for you to carry and then the other to leave at the base to charge while your off exploring. This way when you come back youll have another one ready to go and do whatever.

These are some tips on what to do during your first month in dont starve, and i hope you found it useful. More guides to come, and please add comments on anything you see within this guide. Remember that this is my personal way of playing dont starve, so find what works and develop your own playstyle!

Features to add

The only problem i have with your setup on a basic level is under Day One:

~ (depends on spawn) 4 or more papyrus

I have yet EVER to see anybody get papyrus without at least a Science machine. If you mean REEDS, i also have problems with new users going into swamps on day 1 if they need guides in the first place. Besides that, it's a thorough possible method (many do exist of course) to prepare for the first days, but I'll hold off with more until you are done with the total 30.

Whoops, thankyou for noticing that, I did in fact mean reeds. Also, as a personal preference i set reeds to "more" although i will re-work my guide for those who just want the vanilla Dont starve experience.  Also, i havent played Dont starve in about two months, just the hype of DST is wanting me to get back into the game and the forums, and Ive been using this strategy for every world since i created it, and thought i might as well share it. That guide took upward of half an hour though, so enough for tonight :p

I followed the same strategy in my first plays but with only 2-4 chests and without the Bird Cage. I used to think that my Straw Hat was enough to stop rain and overheat.

You should show how to make Umbrella and Eyebrella.

Farming Birds with Catcoons, Frogs or LurePlants is essential in the second/third month if you want to kill giants. Feathers are used to craft the strongest weapons in the game.

It is worth to craft gun powder early.

As an addition to this guide, there is no penalty for destroying entire villages and relocating near your base for protection. It may make your game too easy.

way tl;dr like there are so many guides, why do people keep putting this kind of stuff over and over again just because they feel like it?

My OCD makes me do it.

Because people keep asking for this advice. Unless we have some thread with all advice given and always accessed and commented on, that common knowledge gets lost sever months down the line.

Something being long doesn't make it bad. In fact, I find it to be the opposite. If this entire forum was just short post after short post, people would never learn anything beyond extremely situational tips. and that would be terrible.

This is a good guide but day 1 should be absolutely dedicated to getting enough food (carrots/berries/mole morsels) to survive at least to day 3.

Overnight on day 1 should be done in a forest to gather wood around a campfire. And cook food, meaning you can dedicate seveal days and nights to exploring.

Petals are of minimal value (unless Wolfgang), other materials (eg stack of monster meat from destroying spider biome approx day 9) are better to be used as fertiliser.

The rest of autumn should be spent transplanting, getting the beefaloe hat, and some beeboxes/mines to kill some mactusks in winter

I dunno about petals being of minimal value.  I like to gather as many as I can so they can turn into rot which I can use to start my berry and grass farms.   The sooner I have a clump of easily reached resources, the safer I feel.  I don't know that what I am doing is optimal since I am in no way an expert on this game, but it does work for me.
