how to?

Don't compare Don't Starve to Minecraft, it's a definite apples and oranges situation. The first three things you should be focused on making are a fire pit, a science machine and a crockpot. All three of these need a hefty amount of rocks, so I'd mark down any quarries you stumble across. Once you've got these three things you'll have a little wiggle room, and you can take the time to figure out what to do next.

My order usually:

1. Find someplace nice (some prefer near bunny, beefalo, pig village, spider forest, cave, it's your choice really)

2. Build fire pit, like Dwerbomb said, darkness is dangerous.

3. Build science machine, alchemy engine, and lightning rod (It's a must!)

4. Make chest for your excess inventory

5. Now plan your food (the important one is ice box and crock pot IMO)

That should cover the essential, after that for make things easier

+Plant some grass, twigs, and tree for convenience purpose

+Make drying rack to preserve your meat

+Make something that can produce food like farm, bee box, or something like that

+If you're near summer, build endothermic firepit and ice flingomatic (trust me you need this)

+If you can, make something like panic room that have many trap for the hounds (If you don't have something like beefalo or pig house near your base

I think after that you're pretty much won't have any hard time for living. You can make your base pretty, build magical item, and explore without worry.

I've never played minecraft, is it fun?  *ducks quickly*

The very first thing I do when I land in a new world is gather enough grass and twigs to make two torches.  And then make sure I have enough of these supplies to make two more.  Always.  As others have said, be afraid of the dark.  Find some flint lying about, and then use that and some twigs to make a pickaxe and axe, for mining rocks and cutting trees.  Hang on to whatever pinecones you get, you'll need them to pacify a treegaurd if (when) you spawn one.  I usually keep at least twenty on me for this reason.

I could go on for hours.  Really, though, you want to learn from your experiences when you die and just get a bit better each time you play.  Learn how to make a shovel and plant farms.  Learn how to kill spiders for silk.  Learn how to defeat the hounds when they come after you.  Learn what's fun for you.

While asking for advice is great, don't treat it as gospel.  My favorite food device is a boat load of drying racks, and I could live without the crockpot.  Other people hold exactly the opposite view.  As long as you Don't Starve, and have fun not doing so, you're doing it right.

Don't compare Minecraft with Don't Starve. Minecrap is a happy rainbow kiddie land where surviving the last thing you will remember while Don't Starve is an uncompromising land of cruelty where you need to exert effort in order to survive.

Plus, helping you through the first stages will take the fun away from the game as it gets easier with experience and knowledge.
