[Question] How do you art? Don't Starve Style

To all of my fellow modders out there.  There are some great artists among you...

Current Tips:

How do you create your art for the game?  Personally I use Inkscape, but I feel like my art does not fit the style of DS.  I love the style that this game uses, but I can never seem to make something look like it fits and make it look good.  I spend hours trying different things and just say "fudge it" once I feel myself getting tired of it.

I will use path effects: hatches, sketch, and pattern along path to try and get it to look good.  I just play around with colors till something looks ok in game.  It seems like most shade and dark parts have a hatching effect but I don't know how to replicate that effectively with Inkscape.

Any techniques, tools, software you can share?

What specific qualities should a piece of art have to encompass the DS style?

If anyone uses Inkscape can you provide any pointers?

Free is good...  I don't have photoshop or a drawing tablet.  Just doing this for fun trying to do it on the cheap.

Yeah... I personally have a bamboo pad that I never use, Can't get the hang of drawing and looking at that the screen at the same time.

Any special techniques anyone can share that they found works best when trying to capture the DS style?

Being loose with lines is always a must, although there isn't many crazy stray lines in DS art a few small stray ones don't hurt, black is always filled in with the line tool instead of being colored normally, normal colors are done a bit like watercolor.

And check out Jeff's DA, stare at the art hard

Ah yes watercolor... i see it.

So Bad Ass
