Next expansion: To the Seas

Recommended Posts

Alright so I've been thinking, theres all this empty space for the ocean when I open the map and scroll out. Maybe there could be some way to create a port, or have one on the map where you can craft a boat. Add some pirates and maybe have them attack if you aren't carrying any gold(what didn't come here to trade? kind of thing) And be able to have them follow you by offering gold. Possibly a pirate lord similar to the king pig but who will actually dish out items if you give him gold? He could have a chance to give you a treasure map that you'd have to follow and end up either on an island or fishing something up from the ocean. Of course some sort of new boss found in the ocean as well as some fish creature mobs, open to ideas.

I cannot even count how many times this has been suggested.

I lost count at 'too many times.'

Sure, an underwater DLC could work.

But pirates, unless Klei managed to do some fantastical thing to make them totally unique, are about as used-up as a ****** ***** ********* **** ********

And what you're saying is essentially copy and paste everything about the pigmen and add boats to them.

Sorry, but I just don't see the point.

But now I want to make a mod that makes pigmen appear with newspaper pirate hands on and have boats at their feet.

I could definitely see this working, although it would be a similar investment in manpower as the caves update, so we will have to wait for DS:T to release.

The biggest challenge I see is making the oceans some place that is rewarding to go to, yet hostile enough as to not encourage the player to completely avoid the land. It should absolutely be discussed whether or not the player can swim, as forcing them to stay in a fragile boat could be quite suspenseful. There could be floating icebergs to provide the player some relief from being cramped up in the wooden boat, and these may posses other dangers. Fishing would definitely need another look to make it more interesting, but that should not be too difficult as there are a lot of examples of real world deep sea fishing techniques.

In terms of mobs, we have the straightforward analogy of hounds and depthworms in the form of sharks. Walruses similar to McTusk could inhabit the icebergs. We could also definitely see some sea birds and dolphins working together to round up large schools of fish.
