farming in winter

Recommended Posts

Crock pots and drying racks rot, farms do not.

And technically, if you quickly fertilize crops on the first day of winter before the temp drops, you can do some last minute crop finishing if it's not raining for a crop growth boost. After the temp drops and it's not raining however, you can no longer farm no matter how many fire sources there are.

The atmosphere needs to be moist enough, and it's either too frozen or too dry (fire pit drying the frozen air) in concept to work.

No matter what, you can't grow crops in winter until it's over, but you may harvest crops grown or keep them indefinately until harvested.

Theoretically, you can grow them on the last day of winter, I think :p

I like don't starve but i'm always paranoid about death. When I tried to use manure on my farm crop during winter and it didn't work I thought I was screwed. But I got some tips from @Flare2V during one of his streams on killing beefalo during the winter, and a strat on how to kill them. So even though you can't really farm dude, kill some beefalo if you can find some. They're great sources of food!

I find the beefalo to cute to kill. I stick to murdering pigs - then using their skin to make a weapon to kill more pigs.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHHAHAHAHAAAAA

They never see it coming

I prefer to feed them four Monster Meat, murder their rampaging Werepig selves and get 2 meat and 1 pigskin for it. of course this is under the assumption I'm getting enough Monster Meat from the myriad of sources it comes from.

Oh, I didn't mention but I do this too. I kill spiders for the monster meat, pretty reliable source of monster meat income. :D

I found that honey is the best thing to stockpile for the winter. Depending on season length 2 stacks of honey should be plenty for daily consumption and take a LONG time to spoil. Keep in mind that bees don't produce honey in the winter. So this doesn't really answer your question (sorry).

Beehive + Bird stocked in Bird Cage + Spider Den Nearby = all the food you'll ever need *_*

Kill spiders for monster meat.
Turn some of those meats into eggs by cooking them and feeding to the bird

Harvest x1 honey daily.

With that combination you can do stuff like 2 eggs, 1 monster meat, 1 honey in a crock pot.   Toss a couple bunny traps for regular morsels for variety's sake :p Using a twig sometimes might work too if you used enough meat (I don't know recipes by heart).
And when in doubt just go hunting for those elephant-beef-things  :p

Due to what might be a bug, when you're away, the bee box applies the now working un-loaded honey production code eventhough it's winter. I never needed that, but it's cool to know.

I do not own RoG on a side note.

Spiders? Phff... get on my level, I live off hounds. :wilson_wink:

But you're right, that's all you need to not starve ever.
