Major Water Overhaul: (Perhaps Future DLC) Rivers And Oceans

Recommended Posts

First post! The exploration aspect of Don't Starve is great, but the enclosed-land areas and an inaccessible sea limit the rich/cohesive environment Don't Starve has presented. Well made water-scapes are just as important as landscapes in games that feature multiple biome worlds. The following are my suggestions for future expansion of the game, perhaps part of a future DLC if there needs to be a direct monetary justification.

1: Raise Sea levels so that the land isn't one large overhanging plateau and add a small coastline.

2: Rework the sea by adding multiple water environments (biomes) with sea-life.

3: Allow players to build sea-craft with multiple upgraded versions that don't wear out

4: Perhaps rework land so that there are less skinny peninsulas, (to help implement the next suggestion).

5: Rivers! Instead of the current intruding canals of sea add actual rivers, (not too small).

6: Make the feel of the sea not so dark and dying, already have enough on land; more like Life of Pi.

7:  Make sure that life forms in the sea are a good balance of hostile and neutral.

8: Add moistness for the ground that allows faster crop growing and water buckets.

Maybe as an alternative to sea-crafts, have the ability to craft bridge structures as well, for when you want to have a quick traveling route to connect certain landmasses together in tight spots of water that a boat wouldn't navigate very well.

This is an interesting concept, I wouldn't mind a way to cross those tiny gaps that are sometimes generated between biomes, could make travel that little bit easier, though if it turned out as expensive as crafting walls or roads I would probably just take the long way around, the option for those who like building wall structures and roads would be appreciated no doubt.

Also what do you mean in #6 with "Not so dark and dying" and Life of Pi? I don't know if I understand the sort of mood shift you're implying. More adventurous or something like that? I personally like the tone as it is to be honest. Wouldn't want it to shift to something like Wind Waker's bombastic soundtrack while boating around (though don't get me wrong I love Wind Waker and its mood, just doesn't transition well to Don't Starve's established uncompromising survival game atmosphere). I imagine it being a lot slower and more deliberate, maybe boating out to the middle of a contained pond or off the coastline in a grassy biome, fishing for squid or some other tasty seafood.

I would like this. But would it be a DLC? I see it as an update

i see it as a perfectly fine DLC, i'd buy it.

I'm not sure you understand what needs to be done here, Klei would have to rework world generation, add in a whole new Sea area, make it where you can get rid of water blocks (Meaning, making them crossable) not to mention balancing all this with RoG and Vanilla, it's a ton of work, and I certainly wouldn't fault Klei for making it like, a $5 or so dollar DLC.

@Jamescell I can understand that with some mobs, but can you really call Pengulls morbid? I think they're hilarious! Glommer and Chester are fuzzy and filled with life, Mandrakes have terrified faces but their little peeps are adorable (if not annoying to some after extended exposure).

I mean the game can be pretty bleak, especially once you start losing your sanity, but I think they do a good job balancing the morbid with the endearingly cute. Even Beefalos are kind of nice to hang around, at least until they go into heat. XD

Can we not edit posts? :( Wanted to add fishmen.

I think you need to have a minimum of 5 posts to start editing previous posts. Kind of silly I know, but just look around the forums and contribute to some discussions and you'll be able to edit whatever you need to in no time flat!
