King of Winter (Revamped for RoG) Tips please?

Recommended Posts

Hi there.

As I have noted in other threads, I recently purchased RoG. I have never been lucky and found Wes, so I decided to try AM again and look for Wes with Maxwell (oh the delicious irony.)

Unfortunately, my luck means (more often that I like) I frequently get "King of Winter" as my first world (and I'll deal with my Maxwell-related problems at the end.)

I remember my Pre-RoG tips easily enough (such as I'm in the camp that likes to torch immature trees for Heat Thermal Stone warming, then harvest the charcoal at the end.) Many other things I did just for basic food gathering are now  crap.

I'm especially looking at you Jackalopes.

In ye olde game days, I'd find the Savannah, place many traps, and (eventually) get enough to make earmuffs, and have morsel meat to live on.

But now with the (reduced) three day segments only, I'm lucky if they come out of the hole at all! I've tried camping in the area, coming back a day (even two) later, even considering bating the traps.

But that last one is the other problem. There are (often) a lot fewer food pickable resources. Most time I can't find berry bushes in the area and (if lucky) I find 3-4 carrots before it gets to Night. So if I bait the traps, I get one step closer to starving by only "breaking even" with food swapping for the traps.

The moles I was hoping would be an offset are often not in the area I am in and when so, are only one, when I need 5-8 just to make do daily.

And I stink at kiting, so fighting Pengulls is not a sustainable option for me.

(And here's where I add Maxwell's "special" limitations.)

Plus, as Maxwell, I can't take many damaging hits, because if not careful, the cold damage could kill me if I get too low. And I can only use the Night armor/sword so much. Same goes for the limited "codex" summoning. Anyway, the Pengull swarms quickly dispatch my buddies and I'm still left hurt if I try a back seat guided combat approach.

Finally, there's the manner of (low) Sanity gates. More often than not, I find Maxwell's way blocked from minerals at the beginning with Sanity gates. I also am lucky if I find a couple of green mushrooms at all.

And almost all the attempts I tried, the Thing on my side did not have evil flowers close to the gate.

Waiting to drop while equipped with the sword and armor takes a very very long time, and that means i have to either not place a fire pit elsewhere and waste wood burning campfires at night until I find the gate and evil flowers  (as I find around 6 Nitre rocks in my travels on average before that) or waste campfires at the gate/flowers waiting before it's low enough and I can switch to the sword and armor (which I need to use to get food and I have to keep to lower my sanity or keep it low, but I'm starving due to food....you get the idea. )

So if I could get RoG AM tips for King of Winter as my first World (and additional suggestions how to handle it if I'm Maxwell) with food (and Sanity Gates with no Green Mushrooms to speak of as Maxwell?)

*Tries to pull the re-n00b hat off, but it seems stuck this time.*

If you can get an early science machine up for a shovel, you can place traps, (bait them if possible) and dig the rabbit holes to spawn the rabbit (who hopefully will run into the trap), as daytime is so limited.

If you can find early spiders (again with a science machine up), boomerangs become a possibility, rather than traps, plus this opens up birds for food. Also, save monster meat till the last moment, hunger-wise, and you can get a reasonable sanity hit by eating multiple pieces.

The King of Winter as World One is the crap roll of the dice, although it's pretty common.

For most characters, finding the green mushies to regain your sanity, which can be hard to keep up, is the issue - using Maxwell puts a different spin on the scenario (Never tried AM with Maxwell, myself). Getting through the low sanity gates would be a real challenge.

Personally, I'd recommend using Wickerbooty, WX, Webber or Willow. But good luck with Maxwell.

Thanks. The problem is the gold rocks are not there and I'm unable to survive without the hat/food, so I can't explore far to get gold to make the machine to make a shovel to get the bunnies (I would have if it allowed me to build it like the hammer now does.) If I'm forced to frequently move and burn stuff all the time just to hopefully travel further and HOPEFULLY find a gold rock (instead of it all being behind that dang gate)  before starving, maybe I'll luck out and find more food.

But this is "The game is Afoot" with Rot all over again, with fewer resources and permanent winter.

Edit: the gaming gods have heard my plea:

When I went to another green grassland, two bunnies were out...and a couple of other bunnies in my original zone popped up...and I found MacTusk...right next to a Pengull Rookery...which gave me a tam, a tusk, teeth and a blowdart...and some various meats.

I hope to find at least one gold rock this time before moving through the gates since I can afford to wait for the sanity drop now.

Nope, not enough food and died trying to hunt some. Oh well, next time...

I'm so glad I finally completed AM before RoG.

Although I have this niggling need to try to defeat it with RoG (but I'm sticking my fingers in my ears and going 'la la la').

Good call. I mean I *could* make a game w/o RoG to start AM, but that feels like cheating to me. Since Wes is supposed to be hardcore and such.

Realistically, until I "remaster" KoW, I might not want to have it as my 1st world.

But if I get "The Game is Afoot" as my 1st, then i get permanent summer after 10 days,  And "A Cold Reception" is really 60-70% rain...*sigh* it's not easy being Maxwell sometimes.
