Maxwell Resource (Low Sanity) Gathering Tips for Early Game?

Recommended Posts

(Assume this is spoilered regarding his abilities, so stop reading here if you want to Unlock Maxwell and understand his abilities for yourself.)

I admit, I don't often play Maxwell. but with the RoG, I decided to focus on him once again.

I quickly found out some of the things I learned as Wilson (and re-learned as other characters) became a problem with Maxwell. His dang Dapperness turned out to be a double edged (Dark) Sword!

Take the case in point trying to gather Nightmare Fuel (NF) and Beard Hair (BH) for various things (including his Codex and Meat Effigies.) Non-Wilson players would simply lower their sanity and kill a bunch of Beardlings/Nightmares until they got the NF/BH they needed, then restore their sanity. But Maxwell, even after you summon a few of his buddies, restores sanity way too fast (while your health is very low even if you use that armor to mitigate most of the damage.) While with three buddies, his max sanity is limited, keeping him near insane (and without shadow attacks and losing sword and armor durability) was the problem for me--let alone using up the nightmare fuel just for summoning when I am trying to build my magic machine and components from it!

This means the only thing you can do is save the sword and armor and not use them too much and make sure they are still around to keep sanity low/lower sanity when you have to build your first Shadow manipulator and other NF stuff.   Or you can risk picking a bunch of evil flowers and hope they repopulate enough  until you are strong enough to go into the ruins later game.

(Or waste that one day a month going flower picking instead of glommer finding. Or would planting a flower garden and quickly picking it on a full moon work? I had not seen if planted flowers change or not, and this only would work if you had the RoG add on and doesn't answer the vanilla game methods.)

Is there an easier way to manage low sanity and Maxwell for low-sanity resource gathering? (With all the RoG changes,) I was expecting there'd be a few new tips on this with Maxy, but I don't see them if there.

Craft the Nightmare Amulet. Sanity is set to Zero while wearing.

Don't forget an alternative source of nightmare fuel early on is to hammer the touchstone pig-heads during a full moon - they will drop nightmare fuel.

If you get an early Glommer, eating his gloop will also give a massive sanity drop.

*slaps head* Green Mushrooms!

Yeah, much cheaper than the life and sanity costs of maxy crafting! (That also will help if I play a non-Rog game too!) Like many others, I completely forgot the uncooked amount of sanity drop, but (unless I'm wearing his sanity-dropping combo,) I'd better have several on hand to do my work! Thank you @Maximum124!

When I use up his sword and armor and can't find green mushrooms, usually I spam jump into wormholes and quickly harvest until I can get a bush hat and camp out the nightmare cycle in the ruins.

Yeah, wormhole discoveries are...unreliable. Sometimes i find them on day 2, sometimes on day 26...

Whenever I play Maxwell, I usually save the sword and armor for important fights, against giants/tentacles/large groups of pigs.

If you can't find green mushrooms or craft a nightmare amulet, just save your stuff I guess.

What I was doing, but the green mushroom thing just made the game more reliable. If RoG is enabled, there are even more green mushrooms now it seems. (Or could be I got lucky in the Worldgen, and it was a coincidence.)

I usually jump in and out of wormholes then equip the sword/armour to make sure he doesn't gain the sanity back immediately. If you're worried about wasting the sword before you can replace it, use a different weapon in place of it, but re-equip to lower his sanity again if you need more time.
