How do you deal with bosses (dragonfly/deerclops)?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

How do you deal with bosses during the winter/summer time if they show up? I haven't ran into the deerclops yet but just when summer was about to end, a dragonfly flew near my base and burnt my buildings.

I tried to fight it (as Wendy) to try to lure it away, but I got toasted in 1 shot.

Now I started a new file and I was wondering what preparations can I make to avoid getting killed from these bosses if they appear.

Thanks for your help/suggestions!

Both Bosses announce their upcoming arrival, giving you time to go somewhere else for their "visit." Unlike ole Deary, Dragonflies are attracted by Birch nuts.

Like fire Hounds, having a stone panic zone (with an endothermic fire pit)  work for the Dragonfly's burning, (of course the tooth traps can't hurt the flying creature, but it can work if open and big enough for Deerclops) but both the Dragonfly and Deerclops still have their area damage.

The Dragonfly is a 2 space (I believe, since it's hard to measure in the thick of it,) but it has both the slam and rings of fire. If hunting via melee, bring a Thermal Stone chilled!

The Deerclops is about 2.5,spaces, but is less now than before RoG due to its two-hit freezing power.

While you can outrun a Deerclops, an angered Dragonfly is as fast as any character. Using speeding up tips (walking cane, Wx's System overload) is HIGHLY recommended and NEVER use any slowing items. Once a DF is passive (such as waiting it out without attacking afterwards or freezing it with an ice staff) it simply "seeks" items to convert to ash to eat. if not looking to fight at all, you COULD try burning items and see if it will eaat what you place to go away, but I never got the hang of placing ash for it to notice first, and getting too close angers it.)

Ranged weapons are important here for both, (especially since  I suck at kiting,) and I've been told blow darts, MANY blow darts-as in 28 for the DF and 20 for the DC-are easier than using area explosions like gunpowder. But the sleep darts and Gunpowder (or old bell) do work if you can get them STILL to activate it. (You need around 14 gunpowder for the DF which is immune to fire when killed so no ash loot worries. Deerclops needs 9 and something else to kill it without fire. 10 is too many.)

if you don't have the resources yet, get them to follow you to a swamp. Those tentacles will kill them (and a few will be taken out for free mm, spots, and tentacle spikes!)

No matter what, bring LOTS of multiple armor as it breaks to cycle through to fight/pick up stuff safely.

And of course, bringing (bribed and Neutral like pacified largest size Treeguards) allies in the fight never hurts while you range them, especially if FROZEN, (what;s that Deer/Dragon? You don't know what it is? It's a [CENSORED] ice Staff you [CENSORED!] And for one of them: How do YOU like it for a change?!)

dragonfly just give one hit and run where you dont care with it buns or not it will despawn after some days. Deerclops will try to destroy your base no mateer what so you should have a boor merang and trwon at him dont go to far get some distance let him atack repeat until he dosent agroo on you that will do the job is simple and cheap and you dont need to rush everything

How I usually go about killing giants would be one of the following:

1)Make the giant chase you to a tooth trap field you made. I usually a alot of tooth traps set up to make the hound waves a breeze. They work pretty well on giants all beside the dragonfly ofcourse. They have not effect on the dragonfly..

2) Old Bell/ Pan flute or ice staff. First use the pan flute or ice staff to disable the giant then walk up to it and ring the bell then repeat. Takes 2-3 uses for the most part 3 unless its the bearger it only takes 2.

3) Gun powder/ pan flute or ice staff. Pretty much disable the giant then run up to it and put a bunch of gun powder next to it then light it with a torch and run away. 15 gun powder should do the trick. Using gun powder is probably my favorite way to kill em.

Thanks everyone, I'll try out your suggestions.

When you guys mentioned having a separate base with traps, do you also wall it off? What type of walls can hold up well and easy to replicate?

Since I haven't gotten far enough yet (no strong weapons or anything), I will probably look to lure the bosses to another area to protect my main base.

it depends. With a hound only room o' death, I can make a small corridor that is walled with stone so they are forced to run into a line of deathtraps. However, this is when I have few traps and need to make all of them count.

When I get many traps, then I like to make a big open circle of traps where anything from all sides just steps in one after another to get me and often dies. This also works on all giants (up to a point as you need to hit them later or soften them up before sending them to the trap circle to die) except dragonflies.

I had walls at first but they got destroyed by some giant or other, and they just got in the way.  I find a solid circle of traps works best, then you can just keep leading the enemy across it in any direction, trying to guide them to untriggered traps, till they die.

But yes, otherwise pan flute and gundpowder (don't use too much on giants that aren't dragonfly, or you'll only get ash for loot), and/or blow darts - shoot, run, shoot, run till it dies.  I always end up with lots of blow darts after hunting MacTusk all Winter.

You can kill every giant in melee if you want. I posted some vids of Wes killing dragonfly and deerclops (and other giants) in melee if you want to take a look:

Dragonfly: http://www.twitch.tv/neodeusmachina/c/4704517

Deerclops: http://www.twitch.tv/neodeusmachina/c/4715478

Granted, these were not the best fights I've had with the giants, but that should still give you an example of how you can deal with them! The only thing you need is some preparation. However, I strongly suggest you stockpile on blowdarts during winter so you can easily dispose of the Dragonfly in summer. However, this is not possible if you start your game in spring (as was the case in my Wes playthrough).

Also, other giants can walk on tooth traps, so you can also use that to your advantage!

Hope that helps!

kite them!

the deerclops is easy, get a good hat that gives you sanity, hit him 2-3 times, dodge his attacks, keep doing so until he dies, but you should be blasting insane. same with dragonfly, but be close to a endothermic fire, and have ice cream & watermelon.

A thermal stone will do. And assuming my RoG newby-ness isn't going to cripple my playing style, the next time I see ole Sparky, I'll see if the Fling-O-Matic makes any difference. I'm betting a charred husk of a machine though if I don't directly attack him still, however.

When last I fought the firefly in vicinity of a flinger (quite awhile back) the flinger was not flammable (no flammable components = non-flammable structure), and since the DF only ignites buildings and does not wallop them, it was safe.  Again though, this was many weeks back.  Can't guarantee they didn't sneak in a change to the DF attack.

That gives me hope an area "ring of fire" won't destroy it. I have been wrong on "what won't burn" a few times so I'm being wary, but going to try and see if it helps or not.

Or...I could just wimp out and go Pan flute/gunpowder like everybody else :D

Thanks for the good tips everyone.

I just managed to survive summer by avoiding fighting the dragonfly. It burnt down lots of trees but at least my base was safe.

Is there a good method on farming materials for making blow darts?

Winter is coming soon so I'll probably avoid the deerclops for now. But I want to try to kill the dragonfly in my next summer with kiting + a few blow darts to speed up the process.

Well, a blow dart uses 2 cut reeds, 1 hound's tooth, and one Azure  feather.

You can get reeds simply by picking a bunch up in a swamp while armored.

You get hound's teeth by either using strategies how to avoid hound waves, going after Red/Blue hounds (they almost always drop a few teeth) going after MacTusk Hunting Parties (or just more Blue hounds) or (if playing the RoG game and not a vanilla game) destroying a (Sandbox) hound mound. (This is a guaranteed tooth/bone shard drop, but remember that mounds don't reform, so keep a couple to "refarm" the hounds if you need a constant farming amount. if not, kill all the damn dog mounds!)

Azure feathers (besides the chance of dropping from a tumbleweed or hacked up from a Catcoon) only drop from Snowbirds in the Winter season. The easiest (besides using something like Wickerbottom's ranged book attacks or the Old Bell) and most cost efficient way is to simply boomerang Snowbirds and collect a bunch of their feathers.

I recommend going walrus hunting to acquire blow darts, especially if you have several camps close to each other. You'll get a blow dart guaranteed plus hounds teeth and possibly tam o' shanter.

Remember McTusk respawns on the third day... So if you kill him on the 21st, he'll return on the 24th. So it's possible to get 6 bd's from 1 camp. Need to be quick on the last day of winter and it's sometimes hard to do but possible.

I've gotten 18 blow darts in one winter from 3 walrus camps that were close to each other.

Also, with all the teeth from the ice hounds I make a second tooth trap field nearby that I can easily get Deerclops to follow me into, saving the blow darts for the DragonFly.

Hope this helps!

I found a simple way to deal with giants but risky if not done right. Deerclops doesnt attack you unless u hit him. Draw his attention to a pool of tentacles and when he kills them all bring him to another pool of tentacles. Worked for all bosses for me so far. I take em to the tentacles let them deal with it.

except my last world wasn't based near a swamp. it took a 1/4 day's travel just to go near a swamp. I held onto my pan flute and Old bell just in case.

U can deal with Dragonfly with 14 gunpowder, 28 blowdarts or using Pan Flute/Ice Staff + Old Bell 3 times. And about Deerclops, u can beat him with only spear but u must be very careful. Just hit 2 times, run, 2 hits, run (don't stop running untill he'll attack).

Two words:

1) Big

2) Foot

the easiest way to kill a boss in a game. just use an ice wand, or pan flute, go over and ring the bell in the guy's ear, and in a couple of seconds a giant foot should come out of the sky and stomp that giant a new one.

since sometimes the old bell wakes up the giant, you might have to run in a circle around the giant until he's under the foots shadow. You might have to take a few hits
