No Hands Challenge?

Recommended Posts

Where did you see it?

I've heard someone mention it when I was watching a video playthrough, can't remember who, and when I searched Don't Starve Challenges it came up as a thread title, but no mention in the posts.  I think its full title is 'Look Ma No Hands'.

From what I gathered, it means not holding anything at any time, but I think there must be a bit more to it than that or I can't see how you'd survive the first night, without being able to chop wood and not being able to use a torch.

There's a way to survive your first night with "no hands", but you would have to be really lucky...

Either find a boon with logs or find a Rook chesspiece and let it "harvest" some trees with it's charge attack. Plant saplings near it to set up a farm for the future.

Or even luckier, find a firepit from a boon or have lightning strike trees and start a forest fire!

Ok, So I found an old thread titled:

Challenge Modes: Look Ma No Hands!

But it's just a collection of challenges. Haven't been able to find a challenge that says you can't carry anything.

I tried to post a link using the Special BBCodes  but can't figure it out. Basically I did a Google search of Look ma no hands Don't Starve Challenge and it was the first topic. It'll lead you to a closed topic but has a bunch of challenges listed. Hope it helps and give me a heads up on how the heck can I post a link. Copy and Paste doesn't work for me either.

Yes that's the one I saw that just had the thread title but no explanation.  Thanks. ^^

Hm, so basically you'd have to run around like crazy trying to find the right set piece before the first night, or hope to find fireflies.

I was hoping it was something like 'You're allowed one torch to get started'.  Yes, I know I could set my own rules, but where's the fun in that? :-)

You could post your own challenge. Make the rules up and let us know! Huh? Sounds like a good time to me!

Maybe other people can post challenges too - I find the ones like the Vegetarian challenge and so on quite unappealing though.

I was going to play to 1000 days, no mods etc, but I got to around 250 days and got bored.

I tried setting all mobs to lots, that was fun.

I Watched Flare2V streaming this.

Simple enough, you can't equip anything in the hand slot.

So you can pick grass, twigs, berries etc OK, but getting logs or minerals that aren't laying on the ground will need a clockwork rook or similar creature that will destoy the tree/boulder/glacier etc.

Getting through the first night is the hardest part. After that, you can use pigs to do any fighting required.

And Giants can be killed using the Pan flute/Old Bell combo, which doesn't require anything equipped in the hand (if you are lucky enough to get something to destroy the Glommer Statue).

Flare2v was using Wes (as he always does) when he was streaming, but personally I'd use Woodie, for obvious reasons.

Woah damn, people are making posts about this challenge? Can I get a link to the other thread too?

Anyways, the goal for me was to not use my hand slot in any way, and I did this for 72 days.

A lot of people talk about luck being a big factor, and in some ways you're right, but you need to consider the actual odds and the knowledge needed to complete the task. For me, I wanted to find a rook as fast as possible, and knowing that rooks can be found in the wooden thing area, and the wooden thing area is now commonly located in the badlands, I went looking for the badlands. I had found a patch of the above mentioned desert, and then a forest nearby. I quickly located a MacTusk camp next to another patch of badlands, and knew immediately that the wooden thing was somewhere in one of these badlands (singular grassy areas with the MacTusk camp in a forest gaurantee a wooden thing nearby). After I found the rook, I took advantage of his pathing, and after a long day of trying to push him into the grassy area where I had decided to set up camp, I got him stuck on the edge of the land. From there it was just a matter of punching him and dodging to chop down trees, healing him up and keeping him away from enemies. Cactus was my main source of food, but I did manage to scavenge a bunch of other goodies, too. As for surviving the first night, all you need is a single patch of fireflies and running in and out of them can keep you out of the dark long enough to prevent Charlie's attack.

Ah thanks, I wish I'd seen that - I think I'd use Wilson first try, just for balance.

Aha, it was you - I did check your past streams but couldn't find anything so I thought it must have been someone else. ^^

For some reason I can never work out those generalities for myself - if this, then that.  I often find a single mactusk camp like that, but never realised that means the wooden thing is nearby.

This sounds like fun, though I expect I'll die a million times before I manage to get anywhere.  But I shall give it a try.

Thanks!

Have fun, and good luck! Also;

I've heard a lot of people use the term "balanced" to describe Wilson. A better term to describe him would be "neutral", but even that is a little far off. The most balanced character would probably be Wes, with no large advantages over any other character.

To be clear, 'm not angry, just felt like passing that information on!

For me balanced just means he doesn't have any weird thing that changes gameplay (I don't use meat effigies), and none of his stats are really high or low.   But I suppose he does have his beard that keeps him warmer in the Winter.

Maybe I'll try with Wes though - I do like playing with him.

I can't believe it - I decided to try with Wes, and he spawned right next to the wooden thing set piece.  I could literally see the columns while Maxwell was still talking.

Almost feels like cheating, but I'm sure I'll die soon enough and have to restart.

Well, this certainly takes navigtion (or as some people call it, luck(heh)) out of the equation, let's see how you handle SURVIVAL!

I died after 2 days.  Got too ambitious with the rook.

Started again and managed the first night hopping fireflies, and then found the wooden thing, so now I'm just trying to work out how to get the rook to do my bidding.  He keeps wanting to go home when I want him to come with me.

I tried No Hands today, it took me 2 days to find the wooden thing and 4 to move the damn rook. When i finally moved him to a forest, he killed me on the first harvest (Was with low health due to a underestimate of Charlie strenght). Also, sanity would have kill me if i wasn't playing with Wendy, i was with only 35 at my last day.

My main problem with the rook is that when I go to get him to chase me I sometimes get hit by the bishop, since they always end up close to each other.  And I can't get him to go very far from home.

Dodging just the rook is fine as he always moves in straight lines.  Apart from when I get over-confident and think I'm a bull-fighter.

Second try, i chose Wilson. Found Chester and Rook on day 2. This time the wooden piece was on a forest, so i just lured the rook against the bishop and knights and leaved it there. I got a science machine, but then i found a summer trap and risk to see if it would activate or not. Activated and died while overheating and being hit by Charlie. This run would be easy if i didn't tried the setpiece, already had the resources to an alchemy engine...

Try to lure the rook outside the wooden thing setpiece and literally push him when he stops agro to a corner on the map where he gets traped. Also, i made the grass suit to not die instantly to the bishops, try that too.

Can you push him from the front though?  I need to get him over to the rocks so I can get more gold - I have a Science Machine but not enough for an Alchemy Engine.  I suppose I'll go and try it out and see what happens.

I have Chester too, but he got killed once already by the rook so I think I'll just leave him at my base.

Yes, once he loses agro and try to come back to the Wooden Thing, you can push him from the front, but it's very tricky to do so. On my first try, i lost 4 days moving him.
