Mandrake as a renewable resource (I have a balanced idea)

Recommended Posts

My idea isn't that original, I saw it on some form or other elsewhere I can't give credit to the guy that thought of it, but it was part of a multipost a while back, and I wanted to give the topic it's own Thread.

I love the mandrake. he's my favourite Mob. I could never pan flute him, let alone butcher and cannibalize him for my own benefit.But that's not the point of this thread;

I think (not my original idea) that the game should check every 100-200 days to see if there are any mandrakes on the World, and if not, spawn one somewhere. This "is" balanced, in that they are a rare, if highly useful item. they are a limited resource - 1 every 100 days, maybe every 200. Once he spawns, for which there is no warning, you still have to hunt the entire map to find him. and there is only 1 in the world at a time, once every hundred (or whatever) days.

I am beginning to appreciate them as a finite resource, it makes you think about how best to use them, and whether to use them at all. It does add something to the game. So, there maybe valid reason why he should remain limited to the 5 or so in a world, ever.

Thoughts, feedback, counter arguments - please.

i agree since of course you can travel between worlds but they wouldt be alives manking this idead real would be awesome and take off some limits of the game(like having a mandrake army)

Only a few mandrakes spawn in the start of a world.  Maybe only one spawns in 50 days or 25.  Oh, and if you don't want to butcher your mandrake baby, you can find a panflute sometimes at a glommer statue.

Hi, thanks for taking the time to come and chat with me. I'm currently playing Vanilla, so no RoG, and no Glommer Statue.

I also feel that 25 or 50 days is too fast, as I seem to have gotten to day 200 without the need for any mandrake magic, but it would be a nice perk to have every once in a while.

Hi, Creu, and thanks for your feedback. I'm glad that I am not the only one that feels this way about the mandrakes. Yes, I feel that it is important that they cannot be farmed into an army, that would make them lose the feeling of just how special they are. Maybe a 500 day respawn, so they truely feel rare.

What do you mean about traveling between worlds?

I think there should be a mandrake farm, maybe just a normal farm with a small chance of making a mandrake.  This might make more mandrake baby friends.

there are 2-5 mandrakes per world take the ones you have and travel by the next world repeat until you think you have enought i see 500 days would be balacended but i would survive 1500 to have five of them

Mandrake Mandrake Mandrake Mandrake. Mandrake!

"Cannibalize" - are you saying that you're a mandrake?

can·ni·bal·ize

verb

  1. 1.
use (a machine) as a source of spare parts for another, similar machine.
"cannibalizing two broken-down cars might provide spare parts to make one working car"
    •
  2. 2.
(of an animal) eat (an animal of its own kind).
    "female spiders cannibalize courting males"

Only a mandrake would want more mandrakes in their world! That way they could conspire against the player by having all of them run behind the player at the same time! It's pure evil! Like you! Like the other mandrakes!

I knew one day those little bastards would follow me onto the forums! Back you little yippy yap! I have no time for the likes of you! Please leave me alone! Would you stop talking for like five seconds? Holy Maxwell why did I pick you in the evening!? I don't want to have to kill you. Stop running away from me. GET BACK HERE! Urgh. Good he planted himself. Time to wait till morning for an extra special breakfast.

What happened? Why is it tomorrow morning? Why are there hounds? God damn it Mandrake.

God damn it.

(Also doesn't sound like a bad idea. Especially if you have to run everywhere to find it.)

Oh bother. I was hoping no one would pick up on the incorrect context of an otherwise grammatically correct statement. OK, so I was too tired to think of the correct term, and too lazy to correct it. But did you have to Define the word. Really? OK, I know the answer to that, I just want to see the witty and cleverly cutting response you come up with.

It sure feels like cannibalization. He feels too much like a part of me to be able to harm him (on purpose). He's actually a testament to the game, he is INSTANTLY adorable and you love him and want him around all the time, and even though you are glad when he finally plants himself and that yip yap jibberjabber finally ceases, you still wish he could be out in the daytime, with a muzzle (or a deleted audio file).

I want to make a mod for them as a mob.think of a use for him, like a sanity perk or something unique, make his company a bit more tolerable (yip yip yipp yap yip yip yipp yap) and possible some way to keep him above ground/renewable/indestructible. I don't know, i haven't though about it too much yet, I;m still working on some other ones at the moment. That's one of the more complex ones, and I am getting to grips with some of the basic stuff. I don't expect Klei to implement anything like that, that's what mods are for... but I am pretty keen on the 1-in-a-world rare respawn though. I'm glad that you are, too.
