Summer Survival For Starving People

Recommended Posts

Many a person I have ever ran into conversation with on Don't Starve's "Summer" season has complained that it is tough. Well, you may as well call me Mr. Summer Survival Man (don't call me that), because I have a few tips for you that will make Summer be as easy as it can get in a game that wants to kill you.

Step One: Clothing and Base tips.

Summer's harsh weather can definitely get to you if proper attire isn't worn. My main two articles of clothing are the ice hat, and the Summer Frest. Ideal accessories include a thermal stone, and an umbrella. I will explain more about these articles of clothing later. Now, as far as the base goes, there are a few essentials any Summer survival man needs. All successful bases MUST include at least an endothermic fire pit, and an Ice fling-o-matic. What you will want to do when setting up for summer is simple. Place your fire pits outside of the range of the fling-o-matic, but everything inside the range of the fling-o-matic. This allows you to use a fire, and not have it extinguished from the snowball. an optional, yet highly important addition to the base is an icebox. This is quite important for a few reasons. One, putting your ice hat in the fridge causes it to stop melting completely, allowing you to conserve it's awesome cooling. Two, putting a thermal stone inside the fridge puts it in its coldest state, which, if you carry it around, will beat the heat of a Summer's day! Many of you may be thinking,"But Crapplejacks, many of these things are hard to come by! How can I get so many gears, or ice!?" Well for one, I didn't say I was taking questions, but since that was a good question, I'll let it slide. The answer for gears is tumbleweeds. Pick as many tumbleweeds as you can, as there is a chance to obtain gears from the weeds. Also, random chessmen will prove to be useful, so keep your eyes peeled! Whether you start in Spring or Fall, you will run into a season that contains ice. Mine it, mine it, mine it. Store it in the fridge. TAKE ALL THE ICE! Should you find you only have enough materials to make either the ice flinger, or the ice hat, always choose the flinger, as this will keep your entire base from going into flames.

Step Two: Food

Many people I have talked to say to stockpile food, or other such methods that can be time consuming. Honestly, I am going to tell you, don't stress over your stomach. Food can be quite easy to come by. If you have a bird cage, you can easily convert cooked monster meat into eggs. Cacti in the desert will yield an additional item known as the flower. You can make a refreshing salad with this item that will cool you slightly, and the meat from the cactus builds sanity faster than a Tam O' shanter wearing a dapper vest and Top hat! Butterflies can make good food in a pinch, but should not be entirely relied on. If you can get mobs to get into fights with bees, you may get some honey, which is tasty and satisfying enough for your lovely character. Ponds can provide frogs and fish, both useful sources of meat that can be renewed. As you can see, starving is NOT very big of an issue in summertime.

Step Three: Wigfrid

Ah, Wigfrid. My meat lovin' momma. For those of you who play her, like me, you may find her meat diet overwhelming. But have no fear, I have answers! Remember the birdcage idea in section 2? Well for Wigfrid it is a pretty big essential. Being a fighter, she can EASILY take town multiple amounts of spiders and other monsters, which drops the monster meat that can be converted to eggs! The fishing method can be applied to her, and proves very useful. Anytime you see a dirt pile, you can try to track down the creatures, and their flesh will fill your stomach for ages to come. Of course, in a pinch, other creatures, such as the catcoon, can be killed for an additional supplement, but take heed, as it is these devious actions that cause the elusive Krampus to appear...

So this is my Summer survival guide! I wish the best of luck to you in your heat battling adventures! If you ever need ANY advice on certain tips for survival, leave a message below, or contact me on my Steam profile link here-> http://steamcommunity.com/id/cerealmonmon

Happy Surviving!

This is awesome mate. Care to post this in the Steam discussion forum. Many of the guys complaining are from there.

(I hope they don't read this comment :))

What I do is have a separate base for summer. Fully geared for the extreme heat.

and other tip that can be useful : for summer, make your base in the DESERT, in the oasis precisely beacuse: some trees, always one or several ponds, lots of tumbleweeds(No! Really?) = gears, twigs, grass, butterfly wings adn BERRIES!(it's very important for the next step), catcoon(optionnal but useful), and already say, cacti etc BUT there is something very important, buzzards! With some food(even seeds), you can get infinite food as buzzards are always here!(look at your map)Just drop food, run and wait, if they are screaming, run and kill it, and you get more food to bait more buzzards. The fact is, they drop turkey meat, so with berries you can create some turkey dinners easily and get lots of food...Occasionaly, if dragonfly spawn, you're in the desert....not lots of thing to burn...just make things good!

I'll say this one thing to everybody, stockpile nitre from the rocks you commonly break like it's as precious as gold. *it's rarer, at least* I set up endo fires all over my main points, and a few off my main track just in case for good measure. I tend to always have a fire and endo pit together, just in case I need cooling off and I need to cook something, as well. Just don't place them too closely, or the fire pit may cancel out the endo if it has more fuel.

Nice tutorial, but you need to mention, that Ice hat now makes you and your inventory wet and rather fast, causing huge sanity loss. So now its not that effective method of surviving summer. I for one forget to unequip Ice cube in time and as a result often stuck insane for nearly half of summer season...

Very true. The ice hat, at least, will keep you from ever heating up. Like in Winter, clothes will keep you properly kept up for so long. The ice cube negate over heating completely.

Well, its just that for most characters regaining sanity is more serious of a problem, then reducing temperature. Overheating hurts more, but insanity is more of a pain to deal with. Two thermal stones and ice box or ideally a snow chester - permanent solution to the overheating problem (while with the ice box your area of operations is rather small)...

You are very correct. I guess I am just more of a "don't focus on the splinter, focus on the gunshot" kind of guy. :)

Oh, don't mind it, its just my rumblings)) I don't like summer very much. I am sure people can figure it out eventually even without mentioning about wetness problem and thermal stone\snow chester combination.

You should add the endothermic fire(2 nitre 3 grass)

And the staw hat is good too . Here a nice combo I use in Summer: Summer Frest,Umbrella and staw hat. With that I'm good. Also people who play all omnivore characters should capture butterflies and plant them near their camps to provide a lot of butterfly wings for eat if they are scared to go out ^^
