Even though ROG is done with updates, I thought I'd compile a list of some things temperature-related I would have liked to have seen:

  1. (Turns out this one was already partially implemented prior to this post) Following the addition of heat-giving food and the subsequent complaint of "How can my meaty stew heat me up when it's been in my ice box?", I decided that the mechanic could be taken a step further by introducing a temperature meter to freshly cooked "hot" foods, which would TEMPORARILY replace the spoilage meter. The character would gain heat by eating a hot dish based on it's current temperature. A fully hot dish would heat the character the most, but also deal a bit of damage ("Ouch, I burned my tongue!") upon consumption. Heat would decrease over time, faster in winter. when wet, or in an icebox. Upon all heat being lost, the food then begins to spoil normally, and now acts exactly as it does not when eaten (same stats). This could not only add an additional touch of realism to food cooking, but also cause need for greater planning as that stew you just cooked off to save yourself from an imminent and embarrassing death by starvation might kill you.
  2. Having bought the DLC after wetness was removed from winter, I may not have the experience to suggest this, but I believe wetness should be added back to winter, but with a little more thought, and so it is not just a gimmick for spring and summer hats. Snow should become a physical thing, and provides wetness to items on top of it. However, it may now be removed with a shovel or pitchfork. This also allows you to keep paths cleared for easy location in a pinch, or just gaze at the beautiful flooring in your base.
  3. Wetness should cool you based on rate of gaining wetness (major cooling) or losing it (minor cooling). In real life evaporation cools you, and being wet only actually make you cold for so long. This might make the wetness cap on the ice hat and fashion melon more interesting, as you would no longer be cooled as much when wetness reaches the max for the hat. It might also make it easier for a player to tell when they may freeze from rain, based on how fast they are getting wet.

so then food just cooked warms you up. then food that has been staying in the fridge cools you down? it would seem logical. although this would probably mean a rebalance of all warming/cooling modifiers.

Correct me if I am wrong, but according to April 24th patch note ( http://forums.kleientertainment.com/topic/35429-reign-of-giants-april-24-patch-notes/ ) hot food already cool down over time. That means that it can already heat you up if freshly cooked and won't heat you up if it was cooked a long time ago.

However, it doesn't cool you down from being in an icebox. I think someone already suggested somewhere that food in an icebox or left out during winter should eventually freeze. It's good for food preservation, but not edible (I wouldn't risk biting into a frozen piece of meat, personally).

I don't think it would be necessary to have a temperature meter on your food as it is, in my opinion, too much information. You character doesn't have a radiation thermometer in his eyes, and that just seems like the kind of informaiton the developpers wouldn't give us (just like our body temperature).

However, since they stated that they didn't plan on adding any new content to RoG, perhaps this could either be implemented in any future DLC (if they make one) or a mod?

Thanks for linking to that patch note, I didn't see that one. But on the point of the temperature meter, I feel that if food temperature could become affected by something other than time, the player would need some way to be able to check it. I think anyone can tell how hot something is by touching it, at the very least it could be done as a prefix.

Yes I really like the idea of a prefix ''hot'', ''cold'', ''frozen''. I don't know how complicated that would be for the developpers, as there seemed to be some issues with the ''wet'' prefix, especially for translation of the game. Still, it is an interesting idea! =)
