Getting killed by my own boomerang :(

Recommended Posts

It's currently winter and my base is set up between two plains biomes; 1 with beefalo and rabbit holes and the other with just rabbits. Since I'm not very good at this game yet, my only source of food is about a dozen traps and frequent hunting trips around these plains. I run around killing rabbits with the boomerang and checking traps but once in a while I miss and it does a lot of damage... I hold down the space bar to catch it but sometimes he runs to the nearest object to interact with it instead and gets hit. After doing this a few times, I have about 22 hp left and the only thing I eat right now is meatballs (crockpot w/ 4 morcels) which only restore about 3 hp (?).

Is there a "protip" to avoid getting hit? I try not to be standing near something before I throw it but sometimes I miss something and end up going towards it instead of catching the boomerang. Also, what can I do to heal up quick? I have several berry bushes with berries on it still and an endless supply of rabbits. What can I make with that to heal up? Keep in mind it's winter and nothing is growing from my farms as a result.

On a side note, I'm not sure what my next goal should be; I have about 7 drying racks, 5 farms, about 2 dozen berry bushes, a self made forest all near my base. I also have a science machine, alchemy engine and 2 crockpots so I'm wondering what I should do next? I'm planning on making a couple of bee boxes to add to my food to make new recipes and I want to move a few spider nests near my base to farm silk, however there's about 7 level 3 nests clumped together so that will be difficult... Either way, what would be your next step? What would you build next in order to "progress". I'm definitely not ready for adventure mode either :/

I've honestly never used a boomerang, not really needed.  Sounds like you should have plenty of food without needing to kill stuff with it.

As far as the spiders, build some traps and drop them near the spiders.  You can trap them, so if 3 spawn, draw them near the traps and catch 2 and kill the other one, or catch all 3, whatever you prefer.  Easier than trying to kite spiders.

Definitely build bee boxes and plant some flowers near it, you can get crazy honey from it for doing nothing.  The honey is good for honey ham, taffy and more importantly honey poultices (honey and papyrus).

I'd also recommend a birdcage, you can feed cooked monster meat to the bird for an egg.  It's a good way to use that monster meat up.

Boomerangs are more expensive to make than traps, so use traps to catch rabbits instead. Traps are so safe to use! I only use the boomerang to get the koalefant to aggro on me so that I can hit it when it charges me. Also, try not to use 4 morsels to make meatballs. You only need 1 morsel. Use monster meat, berries and mushrooms as fillers. That way, you will be able to make more meatballs with fewer morsels. For quick healing, I usually use spider glands or eat jerky.

You will never be ready for adventure mode. It's really hard and exhausting. The only way to do it is to try it and learn from every mistake you make and then try and try again. I lost count of the number of times I'd died horribly in adventure mode. (Especially in the King of Winter world.) But I was able to beat it eventually and it felt fantastic to do that.

For fighting level 3 spider nests, get the help of pigs. Give meat to 5-6 of them and they will follow you. When you're near enough, click "Attack" on the nest but stay where you are. Let the pigs hit the nest. When all the spiders from one nest are out of it (because they are going after the pigs), you can attack the nest until it breaks and gives you the spider eggs that you can use to start your own spider farm with.

You tap spacebar when the boomerang is about 4 character-widths away. You will only do to pick something up if you are pressing it to early. Also, use it on snowbirds for darts instead of rabbits.

To progress, catch tons of butterflies, plant them, and make bee boxes. The honey goes as fast as how many flowers you have, and it heals for 3, giving 10 hunger, and takes 40 days to spoil. You can prep for ruins too, which is a learning experience with horribly frustrating results. Until you get the hang of it, of course, then you could probably swim in the amount of nightmare fuel you have, kept from spilling out by use of theulecite walls.

In Reign of Giants (You don't have it if i remember) in spring all the bees (including the one from the beeboxes) are hostile.

This is the only reason i don't build beeboxes, really annoying to deal with those bees from your own boxes in spring. and if you don't want to be attacked you have to build it pretty far away from your base :(

I'm surprised the air doesnt damage you at this point :)

On a side note, I'm not sure what my next goal should be; I have about 7 drying racks, ...

Constantly restock those drying racks with morsels, they'll give you small jerky. Mass sanity, food, health replenisher (+10, +12.5, +8 each respectively).

Like others have said, there's no need to hold spacebar throughout the entire boomerang trip. x'D You just need to press it when it's coming back to you. If I feel like it's too close, I tend to backstep a little as soon as I throw so it gives me an extra half-second to react to catching it.

If you can, find a pig village or make 2/3 pig houses and find some monster meat. Feed them the monster meat, each one 4 pieces and they will turn into  werepigs, kill them and you get 2 pieces of meat and 1 pig skin each. Easy meats during winter.

Easy meals don't try and kill you xD

Werepigs are really easy to distract with food (even petals and rot work). If you're trying to shrug off one that's chasing you (if a fight goes wrong, for example) then throw the least valuable food down/petals/rot and run away.

If you're worried about killing them safely, make two pigs become your friend but turn one of them into a werepig. Attack the werepig, join in the fight, easy killing for meat and pigskin.

Good tips all.

Assuming you're already getting the health benefits from jerky...

More Options for healing:

honey - makes honey ham, nuggets, and a poultice (also needs reeds/papryus)

spider glands - make healing salves with rocks and ash

eggs - makes into pierogies (40 health recipe is one morsel, one or two egg, one or two veggies - must NOT add any berries or fruit!). You can farm eggs by building a birdcage.

All of these require fighting spiders (honey means catching bees with a bug net which needs silk, birdcage means catching a bird in a bird trap first, etc.). You can trap the spiders with the same traps you use for rabbits. Very low risk. Just place the traps then aggro the spiders and run back through the traps catching them. Do this over and over until you get glands or silk you need. Better yet, find spiders near pigs and let them fight for you.

Reeds for papyrus can sometimes be the trickiest in that you have to find a swamp biome. But harvesting these are not tough if you just watch for tentacles. Sometimes gold is hard to find, but gold rocks in rock biomes or in graveyards is not too hard.

I like birdcages for other reasons (they recycle food - old sees and old cooked meat become new seeds and fresh eggs) so I tend to make these. Eggs and bacon (and honey ham) are my best winter foods and really get the most out of that monster meat.

If you're near ponds, Fishsticks are also a +40 health food. Relatively cheap. Of course, you need silk to make a fishing pole too. Battling spiders is key to all of these.

Dragonberry pie is the other health booster, also +40. If you've got farms, save all fruit (pomegranets) for these.

Thanks for the tips guys. I've set up a bird cage and a honey box. I feed my bird dragon fruit so I gets 2 seeds, then grow more dragon fruit to make dragon fruit pie. I also make the honey nuggets as suggested. I also got a great world because there's a ton of spiders nests in the swamp so I just lure out spiders and bring them over to tentacles which easily kill several spiders. I can then get the silk and glands left behind and tentacle spikes when the tentacles die :)
