Lordfiscus
Can someone explain where the hell the Red and Blue gems come from? Because there's definitely a chicken-or-egg scenario regarding them, Maxwell, and the Hounds. -Maxwell might have acquired the gems from cave spelunking, or destroying ruins statues. Alternatively, his allies/captors might have provided the gems, leaving Maxwell to mess around with them. -The hounds are digging for gems via the subterranean network under the hound mounds, and any hounds that eat the gems are turned into a red/blue hound, depending on the gem they consumed. The red hounds, being unfit for winter, wait until summer to come out of the mounds, and the behavior of the blue version is the exact opposite. -The civilization that lived in the ruins produced the gems originally, and the hounds are descended from whatever they used as pets/guard dogs. Maxwell took advantage of both.
Battal
Maxwell says that he put the gems inside the hounds himself, so gems were first.

Parrotoss
Maybe Maxwell just replaces a hound's heart with a red or blue gem? Just pop it in and the pumping of the blood would eventually cause an adaptation to the power, right? Perhaps since hounds have monster meat, they are more heavily influenced by shadows and Maxwell in fact creates them from nightmare fuel? Red and blue hounds would just involve gems.
