Your Dont Starve Strategy [Feel Free To Learn And Share You Strategies Here]

Recommended Posts

So to start off Im going to share my usual routine. So after i make a new world i roam around and collect recourses for 1-2 days then i find a suitable nice area to set up a base sometimes if i feel like i have to i settle next to a wormhole. After i settle down i being my research creating tools and etc. If i have the wormhole i will usually go in to collect recourses and come back out. Then the cycle continues. And if I can which i probably will if i find catcoons i will tame them. Cause i like cats :) well I hope you guys enjoyed my strategy whats yours? Feel free to share below screenshots to descriptions would be good :)

My main strategy is simple, learned by many, many early deaths: Don't underestimate spiders!

Staring up, I usually run along paths and borders the first 4 days or so, torches at night continueing to map the area, while eating gathered carrots and berries (often raw), before I choose a location to settle down.

First thing I try to do is figure out if I'm in autumn or spring. If it's spring, I'll collect 6 flowers along with my usual collection in order to be able to make a pretty parasol to protect from rain. I go out collecting sticks and grass until I find a field of boulders then I load up on gold. If I run out of space and don't know where to put a base yet, I'll build a science machine then prototype a backpack hammer down my science machine to get the gold back and continue exploring. I think I explore too much but I want to get the best base position.

I usually try to set up my base in the biome adjacent to a beefalo herd. If that's a bad option or I can't find them, I may instead stay near a set of ponds if that's also near some rabbits. If it's spring, my priority now is to make an umbrella and/or rain hat asap. Now I collect manure for farms, saplings because I want them, attempt to get a pig skin for a football helmet, set up traps for rabbits/frogs/spiders, and spend probably a full day chopping wood (if I have any monster meat, get pigmen to help me). Then I start a forest fire and get charcoal for crock pots and drying racks. As I explore, I really want a gear to make an ice chest. Hopefully I already have one from a clockwork biome, if not I try my luck with graves. If it's spring I want additional gears to make an ice flingomatic before summer but it's not a priority.

Now my priority is to get silk especially if it's autumn. Set up the traps and piss off the spiders one nest at a time. If any nests are t3 (they usually aren't yet but I may have been slow getting established) I destroy them for the spider egg so I can set up at least 1 spiders nest somewhere probably a full biome over from my base. I use the silk to make a tent and a bird trap then a beekeeper hat and nets so I can then take on bees with ease. Next it's bees for beekeeping boxes which I want to produce at least some honey before winter. Sadly beekeeping boxes can't be made in spring because there's no honey bees.

I pass at least one of the nights sometime here planting my own forest and shaving beefalo, but it's probably not strictly necessary.

Winter or summer is going to set in soon. Before winter hits I should have a prestihatitator. I can't speak as much about summer because I have less experience, but for winter you'll need a thermal stone and beefalo hat. In winter I definitely want to go on at least 1 koalephant hunt. I use the winter to gather and fertilize a ton of berry bushes while living on mostly meat. I'll knock down some pig buildings to make my own next to my personal forest and go to town on it. I'll also get a birdcage and bird to be able to convert monster meat into something more useful.

And that's about what I know.

1 - Get twigs, grass, logs, berries and seeds

2 - Find gold and get some rocks

3 - Find beefalo and get some manure

4 - Set up base near beefalo (science machine, firepit, backpack)

5 - Build traps for rabbits

6 - Find spiders and get some silk to build a tent and bug net

7 - Get some bees and honeycomb to build a bee box

8 - Dig up some grass tufts and saplings and plant them and pine cones near base

9 - Burn down some trees for charcoal

10 - Start building farms, crockpots and drying racks

and so on....

Pretty standard approach I would think.  Resources first, find a base with some natural hound defense nearby, use rabbit traps for early food source and then work on setting up base with sustainable resources and improved food sources.

I agree with above, I usually set up base somewhat near beefalo, the constant manure source (fertilizer/fuel) plus the help with hounds makes them very helpful early on.

I missed the "cause I like cats" part when I first saw this, lol

Maybe they should make catcoons naturally follow Wickerbottom.... make her some sort of cat lady that constantly has more and more cats... I sense a mod coming...

First, I gather as many resources as I can while trying to find some beefalo. After I find the beefalo, I try to find a rockyland biome or the pig king (easy sources of gold). I start building a base in the middle of those things (usually near some spiders) with some simple grass, twig, tree, and berry farms. I make some rabbit traps, and immediately prepare for winter. Then, I make some crock pots, and drying racks. Most of the time, by that point, it's winter. I then simply survive, doing the occasional trip for resources. When summer comes again, I make some vegetable farms, and expand the resource farms I've already made, until winter comes again. Most of my winters are exactly the same. When the third summer comes again, that's when I start my magics :D

I go through two or 3 worlds to upgrade. Then, explore the borders to find a base near any combination of the two: Beefalo, frogs, rabbits.

Then I set up racks, stone walled base, and the shadow manipulator/alchemy engine. Get myself situated sitting on a stockpile of rescources, with touchstones/effigy. Then I prep for caves and deck myself out in theulecite and hundreds of nightmare fuel.

Then I get bored at day 60 since the game is pretty much at the point where I can sit in my base and live off bee boxes. So I fruitlessly farm Krampus inbetween making a hound bunker, getting the shootius, and making a pig base/farm with powdercakes and tooth traps.

And at some point I wind up being chased out of the ruins by a spider queen and having a rock lobster get up there with me. The cycle repeats once I have about 200 in a matter of like 60 days and get bored of the mega-herd. Come to think of it, that could be a movie-

Rise of the Planet of Rock Lobsters

Can a robot reclaim his world from the overwhelming army of rock lobsters? On his side he has spiders, hounds, the mighty deerclosp, and a pathetic amount of gunpower! But the lobsters are seemingly unbeatable, with numbers upwards of 100! Then he finds the delete world button...

Opens in theaters 4/18/2014.

I spend my first few days exploring the border while collecting as many materials as possible. Finding gold and stone is more important now, since the alchemy machine got more expensive. If I feel the need to make camp at night, I build a firepit, never the other one. It's awesome to have pits all over the map for cheap fire, later in game. I even do this with endothermic fires during summer.

When I find a nice spot for my base, usually in the 'middle' of the map, I build science and alchemy machine so I can prototype things.

If spring is the starting season, I make sure to build a fridge as soon as possible, to mine ice for the cube.

From there, it depends on what I want to do. Spelunking, building a big base, building a zoo, building farms, gardens...

Colect As Many Resources As I Can Until I Find The Perfect Place. It Usually Is An Island / Near Pig King / A Corner. I Usually Leave Bushes In The Wild As Fires (By Anything That Can Cause A Fire) May Destroy Them In My Base... Almost Automaticly Create Alchemy Engine And Basic Buildings(Firepit,etc...) Then Get Ready For Anything That Is Coming.

I spend my first days on exploring and gathering resources. When I have enough stone (~40) wood (~40) gold (min 10) and grass (~40) I build a science machine, research the alchemie engine (I dont build it, I put it in my base later), a backpack, spear and a logsuit! Sometimes also an umbrella...

Then I continue to explore.

This basically makes me Wickerbottom in every new world ^^
