Plague Mouse Posted April 15, 2014 Share Posted April 15, 2014 I think Wickerbottom was made simply because the base starting character should be quite balanced and neutral, but let's look at it for a minute:The science aspect was Wilson's thing since the moment the game was titled an "uncompromising survival experience full of science and magic". His alias is "the gentleman scientist". All his quotes seems to indicate the science machines and their products were designed with Wilson in mind and he would be the one who invented them, while the other characters can only used in a game mechanic way but not really canon.And yet, Wickerbottom is the one that has access to half the scientific prototypes. Hell, even insomnia looks like a Wilson trait, just look at his eyes and his expressions. So, story and lore-wise, Wickerbottom is the weakest and less interesting to me, and I tend to make my char decision based on that, rather then their abilities. And because he doesn't seem much fun to play as, unless you want to brag about how awesome you think you are at the game. As for which character I like the least for gameplay reasons, I haven't played all the characters enough to say. Willow is probably the most boring out of the ones I have played though. Wickerbottom is the only character who brings something to the game that other characters can't - books. Wolfgang is strong, but you can kite things a couple more times with any character and see no difference.Maxwell has the sanity gain, but I just find that more annoying than helpful.Wilson has beard hair, which isn't overly difficult to farm with any character.Wigfrid has some nice early combat gear, but useless after you get to the higher-tier armors.Wes doesn't even have the perks of characters. Wickerbottom can make tentacles renewable on the surface, farm Krampus (quickly), and put mobs to sleep indefinitely. No other character brings "new content" to the game.
