CJones
Summer is too brutal IMHO. I started a game in Summer and I was dead in about 3 minutes, just from the heat. Absolutely nothing I could have done. In real life, I hate Summer. It's my least favorite season by far. But I spent 2 weeks in San Fransisco 10 years ago in 100+ degrees, and I didn't keel over dead. So why are my characters dying so fast in Summer? Stroomschok
Doesn't the Pretty Parasol help with dealing with the heat? Currently the heat is acting a bit erratic in my game so I can't really test it out.
pwhampton
Alright, decided to do a summer only, summer start run, and I was doing alright till day 5 when the game crashed. However, this feat was only possibly by running Wickerbottem with default plus on. I was able to get my endothermic fireplace up, a science machine up, and then a farm. After I got my melon hat, I was able to get out for some exploration. I abused her book for plants to get grass and twigs before they withered away. Also, had beefalo right next to me so I can get manure to grow veggies before they died on me. Main problem is that by late game a lot of the resources will have been burned away. So, maybe need to stock up on a lot and get a cave farm going for those. Also, my farms kept burning to the ground, and with no ice flinger it is kind of a pain having to make another farm over and over. But, should be able to find a blue gem via graves and get an ice staff to prevent that for a while, until I run out of blue gems of course. pwhampton
@Stroomschok Even with a parasol, a straw hat, and sitting under a tree, you still over heat. You need an endothermic fireplace or a cooling hat like the melon or ice cube to prevent overheating.
Developer Bryce Posted March 15, 2014 Developer Share Posted March 15, 2014 Doesn't the Pretty Parasol help with dealing with the heat? Currently the heat is acting a bit erratic in my game so I can't really test it out. There are two ways items can help deal with the heat in summer. Stuff like the Pretty Parasol or the Straw Hat act in the same way that the warm clothing does during the winter. It won't stop you from overheating, but it will slow the rate at which your temperature can rise. Items like the Ice Hat, Fashion Melon or the Chilled Amulet will actually bring your temperature down to below overheating levels while you have them equipped, similar to standing next to a fire in the winter. So why are my characters dying so fast in Summer?Well there's a reason you don't start in Winter either. You'd also be dead in about 3 minutes just from the cold. Haha don't use San Francisco as your example. I used to live in San Bruno and the weather was always reasonably mild. Now out here in Arkansas where I am now, you'll freeze in a T-shirt in the middle of winter and get heatstroke from being too active in the middle of summer. It's about drastic climates, not mild ones
pwhampton
Starting in winter is possible with any character and with or without default plus. Summer is different because you are limited to needing default plus, and probably needing to use Wickerbottem for her tech bonus and book o' plants. *edit* I completely forgot, but doing winter only worlds now will also prove more difficult since you cannot regrow grass or twigs because things no longer grow in caves. But then again, there are always the new tumbleweeds for that...

Barbarian
I suppose if you start in summer there's no ice to mine though? Doesn't it all melt in Summer?
Renz004
Honestly surviving in Summer is pretty much the same as surviving in Winter, just backwards.Winter = Thermal Stone and FireSummer = Thermal Stone and Endorthermic Fire. For food rabbits are still good. The other big recommendation would be a snow-throwing machine thing to keep your base fire free, otherwise you'll need to be running around throwing ice on everything or putting out fires manually. The first time I tried summer I experimented using the Ice Block and Juicy Melons to keep cool, but it was such a nightmare having to equip them on and off because too much wetness would result in excessive sanity drain that it ended up being flat out easier to just not use them altogether. Personally I don't think those items should make you as wet as they do leading to so much sanity drain because it just leads me to not use those items altogether, or maybe I'm doing something wrong. And if you really want to, you can just skip most of summer by using a combination of siestas and sleeping bags. Just make sure you take the time to throw some meat on drying racks in between naps/sleep.
the truthseeker
I suppose if you start in summer there's no ice to mine though? Doesn't it all melt in Summer? If you start in summer, it never froze in the first place! And if you really want to, you can just skip most of summer by using a combination of siestas and sleeping bags. Just make sure you take the time to throw some meat on drying racks in between naps/sleep. I'm strongly doing this now. Just making sure I stockpile some food in my cold box And IRL, it's (yet again) going to be a humid 102 F in Los Angeles's San Fernando Valley. Stupid me, I ate my watermelon instead of using it as a hat!

I made it to day 7, could have survived longer if: - I hadn't run out of straw to make a new straw hat (so many demands on straw for early Summer items, and most of it is withered)- I hadn't run out of nitrite to make another endothermic fire- I had found a spider den to get the 2 silks I needed for an umbrella (managed to get the pigskins) Actually the nitrite is probably the key - moving around to collect resources is incredibly hard unless you can make an endothermic fire every so often. And the places you need to go to mine stone don't have trees to stand under. I intend to try again though - glutton for punishment.
