Thread for Theories on the Characters' Backstories!

Will

Recommended Posts

One thing I've noticed is that only Wilson has had his backstory explained, and only partually. I feel we need to band together, and brainstorm! How did all of the characters get drawn in by Maxwell? How did Abigail die? Why does Woodie have a talking ax named Lucy, and how did he get the Were-beaver curse? Let's guess! Of course,

SPOILERS!

I have a short, small theory on how the guys got stuck-ed.

  • Wilson went in by obvious means
  • Willow got chased up to the Wilson's now abandoned hut by a curious Wendy
  • The portal got sent to a carnival, where Wolfgang and Wes got teleported in after a stunt gone wrong
  • Wickerbottom got teleported to the world after some troublemaker activated the portal on exhibit in the library she was working on, along with WX-78 who was on exhibit as well (Libraries do show artifiacts like a museum, look it up
  • Woodie accidentally bit into it in werebeaver form.

I always thought Abigail was killed off when the twins were transported to the DS world, and had something to do with her name not starting with "W". I think we underestimate just how important that is. It's unlikely that Abigail would accompany Wendy as a ghost if she wasn't transported as well.

Not really a full back story, but I'm convinced Wendy and Abigail weren't just twins, they were conjoined twins, connected at the head.  Their flowers have a sort of torn-flesh look to them, and are on opposite sides.  I think that may have been intentional to convey that they were once joined at that location.

May as well throw my theories in.

  • Willow used to live in an orphanage (that may or may not have been burned to the ground) and her pyromania was originally her way of coping with that intense empty dread that comes from not having parents.
  • Wolfgang slept with a tiny burlap sack full of potatoes. He couldn't afford a teddy bear on the budget of a circus strongman.
  • Wendy blames herself for Abigail's death, though whether or not this is justified is up to speculation. There's a lot more than survivor's guilt weighing her down.
  • WX-78 is the Frankenstein's Monster to Wilson's Dr. Frankenstein. Wilson wasn't ready to play God, not even with a robot, and could never figure out how to give his creation empathy. Alternatively, Wilson never considered giving it empathy.
  • Wickerbottom owned a library that she both lived out of and kept a large aviary in. Birds were her favorite animal before she saw the adorable offspring of Beefalo.
  • Woodie had a pet beaver named Lucy who bit him after being bitten by a werewolf. A Canadian werewolf. Lucy the Axe is either Lucy the Beaver's soul in an axe via dark magic or something Woodie developed to cope with the loneliness of Don't Starve.
  • Wes and Wolfgang are best friends, having both been in the same circus act. Wes is also the only character who is unequivocally good at heart, although you'd never know from him telling you so.

thanks for making this, it will reduce the clutter and be a good place to compile ideas

all I assume is that they had some connection with Maxwell and any who did not have a name beginning with W had some sort of curse or affliction imposed upon them

Abigail - ghost

Lucy - axe

Charlie - (not fully confirmed but most likely) "Night Monster"

I like to think that Maxwell collects people that he finds interesting. He baits them with something they desire. Once in his clutches he toys with them to see how they react. It's all a game to him, and I think it suits his personality.

Gentlemen, they were all on the order list at a radio factory. The factory had a fire, and all the files were burned but the w section.

The radio is just like the one in the origin video for wilson, and Kevin made a comment about a radio company and a fire in one of my other threads.

Can't figure out how to check threads I created

Under the Clicked Advanced Search link up top (to the right of the "Search" box,) enter your name in "Find author." I'd recommend entering additional filter info (like the date range,) so you don't get your whole history of posts.

Or click your profile name up at the top link, and select "find content" if that's what you want to do.

If you want to follow the threads you created, them simply click the "Follow This Topic" button in the upper right (frame) corner of the thread.

Okay, I'll try.

Willow- Willow was an orphan. She lived in an orphanage most of her life, until a tall man came to adopt children. The man's name was Maxwell. He picked Willow and told her to burn the orphanage down, like she had always wanted to. They went outside and watched the orphanage burn. 32 dead, 38 survivors. Willow looked at Maxwell, but he wasn't there. The flames turned black and became to giant shadow hands. They grabbed Willow and pulled her into the islands.

Wendy- A little girl ran out of the orphanage. She held her sister's hand. They got out alive. Or at least one of them. Wendy didn't understand the concept of death. She asked, "Abigail...? Are you just asleep?" She picked up the dead body of her sister. She started to realize her sister's fate. Two days later. Wendy sat at her sister's grave. Staring. She knew death. She knew hate. A man walked up. "Would you like Abigail back?" "OF COURSE!" Shadow hands rose from her sister's grave. "I'm afraid she won't be able to."

Wolfgang- The life of a strong man took food, and in turn money. Life was hard. He could go bankrupt. He sighed and contemplated. He didn't have the money for much food, so he was fired from the circus for lack of strength. A little while later. Wolfgang lived on the streets. He began a life of crime. Stealing whatever food he could. He lived in a box in an alleyway. He started to weep to himself. How could the strong man he once was become this? "Do you want your strength back?" Wolfgang was not hesitant to say, "Definitely!" Shadow arms leaped from the ground and took Wolfgang to the islands.

Wes- Wes was in the hospital. He was angry. How could he be here? He didn't deserve this! Anyway, he needed to get back out on the stage or else he'd lose his job like Wolfgang and go bankrupt. After a few months, he got out of the hospital. Night. He was walking home for the first time in a while. A man hit him in the back of his head. Wes fell to the ground. When he regained consciousness, he had realized that all of his money was gone. GREAT! Wes ran home. He had to sell everything if he wanted money. He was living on the bare minimum, so he couldn't afford to sell anything. "Somebody help..." "I can." Shadow hands grabbed Wes and brought him to the islands.

That's all I have for now.

Am I the only who thinks Willow wasn't from a freaking orphanage?(That sounds a bit too common, and cliche IMO)

I always got the impression she was an orphan who burnt down her parents in their sleep. I never really pictured any of her backstory after that, though.

Ms. Wickerbottom, Maxwell slipped a book on dark magic into the library so Ms. Wickerbottom would read it and get trapped in Don't Starve.

Willow was setting something on fire, I could imagine Maxwell appearing in the flames and beckoning her in.

Not sure about the others, maybe WX-79 was programmed to protect Wilson, and found his way into Don't Starve eventually by himself, and Maxwell just decided to roll with it.
