[Videos] Development Videos

I always send early versions of my mods to him because I personally really enjoy his videos while i work. He doesn't shout too much, to I can work in peace. While I do think maybe we could wait until there's a few more things, I'm not completely opposed to it. Also, seeing as this is a video thread, you's fellas don't ind I I put up a lil' vid of the Gummy Bears so far, right? Getting my Fraps to work again.

My fraps is f***** beyond repair, so I used Bnadicam.

The sounds are just placeholders, and I haven't given them any collisions yet.

The video is up:

Some small bugs I noticed (I'll add to this list if I see any more):

Note: These all occur with RoG disabled.

Whirlwinds are invisible.

Winnie's selection framed portrait is a black box.

Beanstalk sapling did not grow into a beanstalk.

Overall, we can get some good feedback from it!

Well, this is the best I could do:

It's not super high quality, but that's as good as I can get it.

It's also waiting for some edits to be applied, namely the emptiness at the end of it.

I cayn't see it! It's private! Did you mean to make it unlisted?

EDIT: Nevermind.

I really liked it! That was exactly the type of video I had in my head!

I'm just unsure about two things:

  • Isn't Winniw a bit too cold, all the time? That permanent frost in the border of the screen doesn't look very inviting to new players.
  • Is Klei OK with us using ragtime?
EDIT: And oh, the emptiness at the end is still there. And I think we should use our logo as the thumbnail. Also, it needs some appropriate tags to avoid the random video recommendations .

We're not profiting off of the video. We're also using some of their art assets in the mod (and subsequently the video itself) so I really doubt they would care if we used one sound asset (aside from the ones in the game, in the video) for a video meant to resemble one of their own. I also don't see how it would be different than doing a let's play that includes the ragtime theme.

I don't see anything here about using their sounds for not-profit:

http://www.dontstarvegame.com/player-creation-guidelines

Aside from those details, I suppose I could replace the cold parts with not-so-cold parts. Unfortunately, that means I have to boot back into Windows, record, hop back into Linux and then cut, export, and upload the video.

That's okay though, I expected having to tweak it some. I had to make sure that this was the appropriate type. We've got to wait on Klei for the mod upload stuff and Luggs for strings anyway. Anybody want to dig up the alpha poster, though?

Anybody want to dig up the alpha poster, though?

Do you mean Willette's final version, Willette's earlier version or your revised version?

EDIT:

@debugman18

Though I think Willette's final version still needs some tweaking. The "with" in "with a new character" is almost invisible, making it look like the mod consists of a new character, which is certainly not the impression we want to give, since Winnie is just a peripheral addition.

If the poster art were to be revisited, I'd prefer having Winnie not so prominent, highlighting core features of the mod instead, such as the shopkeeper. But I'm fine with the poster art as is.

Fantastic.

I don't see why we wouldn't use Willette's final version.

Edit:

I tweaked the "with" part, anyways.

I'm having to go back to Windows one more time, since apparently it only actually got some of what I recorded. I'll regrab the capture (just a few things, Winnie running through the beanlets, the gummy bear scene, and the staff scenes.)

Alright, so here's what I've got together. The end ,where it's empty was cut off in the youtube editor, so I'm waiting for it to be applied.

So...I know that we're very close to Alpha, so should we post the trailer in General Discussions? Posting the mod there was fine, so I'm guessing a trailer a few days beforehand wouldn't hurt?

Vid looks very good by the way. The old ragtime trailers were the best. :D

It isn't intended. I've edited it out in youtube already, but it takes some time to be applied.

Are you sure? Because the first one still has the white ending.

But great job on the trailer! I just have a couple suggestions/comments. Firstly, I think the "night of the modding dead" frame should be kept for longer; right now it could easily be mistaken for an official DS trailer, in particular because our logo doesn't include the Up and Away banner, so it just says "Don't Starve". Also, I think the screen shaking and light flickering should be greatly reduced, or completely removed; it's having a nauseating effect on me, and it highlights the video pixelation.

I'm going by what Youtube says. I'll see if I can edit it's length manually.

As long as I don't have to record anymore gameplay I can do any of those things.

Edit:

What frame are you talking about? The countdown?

Edit:

It's a very fast frame which appears right after the countdown. But I just realized that's from the Halloween challenge, and you were supposed to remove it completely .

So, hmm... maybe we should include the banner in our logo, as in the main screen, and show it after the countdown, as well as at the end.

Version 4 of the trailer. :p

Well, fraps isn't working at all.

Open Broadcaster is pretty good. Though the recording quality is lower than Fraps', since it's meant for streaming (so it uses faster, but lower quality, encoding).

But if you'd like to use Fraps, I recall several old threads about its issues with DS and how to overcome them (you could try searching for them). I think it only works with DS in windowed mode.

I've been using it in fullscreen mode. Although, it isn't ideal, certainly.

Awesome trailer, but I feel like something is missing right at the end.  Maybe the "projection end" sound.  I also think the "Up and Away" logo should be a bit bigger, the screen feels really empty.

Niiiice!

I just think the U&A logo after the countdown should last longer. In the Halloween Mod Challenge trailer, for example, it lasts 6 seconds. I think we could do with less, maybe 3-4 seconds, but certainly longer than it currently is.

A "projection end" sound would be a good addition, though not strictly necessary (the Halloween Mod Challenge trailer doesn't use it, for example). And yeah, maybe the logo should be bigger, but I didn't feel the screen was empty.
